Unfortuntely i only watch the english dub version so i didn't know.Then there's the steam all over his body. Just hope it doeesn't have a negative side effect like shortening his life span like the mitotic regeneration technique.
It will slow him down once the effects wear off though.

^^^^Actually its just that if he uses Gear Second for too long not only does it leave him unable to move for some time but also cant dangerously shorten his life span given how fast the blood is being pumped and the smoke from his body is the result of what happens when rubber friction I think, all in all its a cool strategy.
My guess is that the steam is his sweat being evaporated, because of the heat generated from his rapidly flowing blood increasing his core body temperature, along with the friction like you said, making his rubber body shiny and even more elastic like hot rubber.
He has shown extreme resilience so I don't think he's gonna die that easily.

You might call Gear Second a desperation strategy with worst (future?) side-effects, doubt in my opinion the more loose strategy he has is of course Gear Third.
A third gear.I can only fathom it's abilities and it's side effects. Cause if the 2nd gear shorten his life, wouldn't be susprised the third gear might end up killing him altogether.
Actually your a little far away, Gear Second has the danger of shorting his lifespan but funny thing is the only thing that gets short with Gear Third is Luffy´s body, in other word after Luffy uses Gear Third he goes Chibi.
Its funny to see him running around like that.

what the hell? Mini mode??? That's nuts!!! though i wonder if he'll create a 4th gear?? Cause from what i've read,the gear modes is similar to Rock Lee's 8 inner gates/Reverse Lotus technique.
