For some this isn't a matter of a joke or a sense of pride for the subject. Video games are clinicaly proven to be addicting. This is a real problem that effects people in real life in real ways. This can include severe lack of sleep and lack of outside social contact.

Even for me this is a real bad addiction and the fact I have a bad addictive gene that runs deep in my family is bad...

But... so far it's been the most fun I've ever had with an addiction and I've never kill anybody as a cause to it so I'm not going anywhere. Hey! I'm not saying this is a bad addiction. It's very fun actualy and as long as you can supply your self the caffine to get through the day all the power to ya'.

So let me ask you all how badly addicted are you?

I get addicted to Video games and Anime, but it is not stopping me from socializing with my friends and interaction with the world. I usually just play games and watch anime when i feel bored or have nothing to do. Being with my friends and my loved ones is the first priority to me.

** Just a little note to all some symptoms don't apply to some people and I don't mean to offend in this post, sorry. **

The high you get from having fun with friends overrides the urge to play video games.......until you get home and realize that Final Fantasy isn't just going to play itself.

I can get off of anime pretty easily when I choose to do so, but addiction to video games is the most serious problem I have so far. Once, I played a game for over 16 hours straight, without eating or sleeping.

Video games, I have to admit, are created to be addictive so they can at least make money, but they are FUN!!! I'd rather stay at home than go outside because: 1) I don't have many places to go. 2) I feel more comfortable at home. 3) I don't have many friends.

This doesn't imply that I'm a bad person, but I'm just too shy to fit in with the "in-crowd" or with a lot of other people.

Very addicted. Which is exactly the reason why I simply don't play at all, since I know that I have very little to no self-control to stop myself. I'd use to skive off Track & Field practice to go to the mall and play a few rounds of Dance Dance Revolution with a few friends after shopping for a bit.

Anime, though, is a different story :p They should have rehab centers for people like me x_x

For example, right now. I know I should be writing an English paper. But instead, I find myself browsing HongFire and hunting for raws on Winny and can't seem to stop....

Once you pop, the fun don't stop :D

eh... for anime I will only get very addicted in the middle of series that of course is good... ie. cliff hangers

for video games... there's no helping for a guy like me... especailly if it's a real time strat or RPG...

I've never been addicted to the point where I neglect studies or sleep... (sleep is number 1 priority!)

... but I think I'm addicted to videogames anyway :p There are days where I stay home and play for two hours then take a 15 minutes break and repeat that pattern for the whole entire day...

Video games are addicting indeed. There's nothing else in my life right now that I can think of that could tear me away from a good game, except maybe when I have to go to work. the longest session so far has been 18 hours and 25 minutes, spent on Final Fantasy 9. I like my addiction ^_^.

I used to be addicted to games. I woke up at 3 am on an exam day once, instead of of reading the text book on my table, I proceeded to turn on the Dreamcast. It wasn't serious though.

But there's this guy atmy friends' Uni that has a serious gaming problem. The guy doesn't go to clesses at all, stays home and play games all day. His dad has to drop him off to make sure he get's in class, only for the guy to walk out and go home. Don't know what happened to the guy, probably dropped out.

Now for anime, hmmm. Can't really say I'm addicted. There was a while that I watched anime all day, doing nothing but just that. But I was retricted to a bed becuase of a medical problem, couldn't even sit for half an hour.

Not that extremely addicted, since I get studies and stuff done. I'm more addicted to internet (forums, msn/icq), and really need it every day. It's kind of scary :(

I am strongly addicted to games and anime, I can't even imagine a life without it anymore.

I have the same reasons as tzuendaniel, I'm shy too but those few friends I have , like one of those 2 things or both :D, when I'm with them, we mostly play games all the time ^^.

I have been playing video games semi-obsessively since the age of four or five, when we got our first Mega Drive... I grew up with two brothers, so my interests have always been slightly um...'boy-ish': where most of my childhood friends were playing with Barbie and Ken, I had Sonic and Tails ^^; I never really fitted in at all as a child, and I still don't really fit in now, so I rely on fantasy to numb my real life existence. It's depressing, but it actually works, and I find myself happier to spend an afternoon in a fantasy world, than out with my friends facing up to who I am...

As a result of having played for the largest part of my life, I tend not to view it so much as an addiction as a part of my life that I have accepted. I've never really...stopped playing games, so giving them up now would simply seem odd to me, like giving up reading or movies (two other things that I have been engaged in for most of my life). Though I guess if I'm honest, I probably do have a bit of an obsession, the few friends that I have don't really let me forget that... =/ I was actually pretty infamous around my school after word got around that I had pulled many allnighters playing Final Fantasy VII. It's amazing the fuss that some people will make over such things when there's tons of people out there who watch eleven or more hours of TV a day on days off, and are treated perfectly naturally. At least games require active input from the player... =/

As for horror stories regarding this addiction, there's my completion of Grandia in two days, and my 29 hour Suikoden II marathon (I actually played all the way up to the last boss pretty much straight, with no sleep, though I did stop for a bath and dinner...). I don't actually sleep very much, even when I'm tired I normally wake up after three or four hours, so I often end up playing through the night to alleviate loneliness.

Also, during fifth year of school I began to get seriously depressed over a lot of things, details here are not necessary, but the end result was that I skipped school a lot. The time I spent away from school then was mostly spent playing Xenogears, which was surprisingly comorting... It's really quite inspiring how well a good story can mask your real life problems, and draw you in =)

As for anime, it's a minor infatuation compared to my long term engagement to video games. While I'll sometimes spend hours watching episode after episode if I get hooked on a series, I still view it more as a hobby, rather than something I just...do... I can clearly remember when I started watching anime, I can clearly remember my thoughts and feelings for all of the anime that I've watched, and I'm sure I could give it up if I wanted to. I don't want to, but that goes without saying ^_^;

I learned in my psych class this past semester, that the same pathways actually light up in our brains when we play video games as when we are ona cocaine addiction, and that there is a correlation between the difficulty/challenge, and the potential for more addiction. Esp when you can surmount high difficulties. Same thing applies with orgasms (addiction I mean). I dont have any hypothesis with anime, but you all can prob make like a 100 of them.

Combine three vices (you can figure out how they link), and you got H-games. And you tell me why Hongfire is such a thriving and loyal community with such hardcore posters/downloaders/pundits ;)

Im the inverse as last post...I have minor infatuation with video games in general (I like to interact more with human beings), and many of my friends have moved away from gaming, and watch more anime. Mine with anime though, is deadly...I did 5 KGNE marathons during a finals period, and one the morning (from 2 AM to sunrise), of my roomies graduation O_O;;;

PS - for those of you who adamently voted for "moderately addicted" or less, you know...admitting is the first step to recovery....if you want to, that is

I wouldn't say that I am addicted to anime or video games.
While most people spend their time at night watching TV. I'm playing a video game. I get really bored just sitting their and watching the same crap night in and night out. So I'll play a game to relax. As far as anime goes yeah that's a addiction I've had a addiction since I was little and my sister regrets not letting me watch a episode of the flintstones. She wanted to check out this episode call Robotech and I've been a die hard anime fan ever since.

For me that's nothing, I've once played a single game for 70+ hours in one week. However, nowadays I tend to watch more anime than play games. (It's kind of creepy sometimes).

The high you get from having fun with friends overrides the urge to play video games.......until you get home and realize that Final Fantasy isn't just going to play itself.

I tend to combine the two, i.e. LAN party. I had one last month from about 10 am until 4 am the next day, no breaks practically (except for food.)

I would be even more addicted to anime and video games.
The problem is that I buy all these games and dvds and never have time to play/watch.
Thanks to work, I'll need a 32 hour day to catch up on everything!
But one of these days I'll be all caught up. Feels good to never be bored though!

Yus, let's admit it. I've got a solid addiction to video games, and somewhat in anime too. I usually play several hours a day, even more so if I really get it on (tell me about it... star ocean 3 -_-). RPG:s and some FPS:s (in multiplayer, preferrably) take most of the time I spend gaming, and when I'm not playing I watch anime. Also, my gaming doesn't quite kill of my friends, which are a higher priority. It's just that I see them pretty rarely, and if there's a bigger group (even if they're all my friends) I don't really want to be there. I feel like an outsider all the time. :f

I try my best to keep up with my studies though, but it's kind of hard to get up at 0800 when you look at the clock showing 0500 and there's still a dungeon to explore or "just a few" episodes left (damn you KGNE). We'll see how this works out if I ever get a place in international exchange.. at least it should somewhat kill my hobbies and I'll probably either a) start socializing or b) bore to death.

The only game that I play religiously as of now is Guilty Gear XX#Reload... and that's still only about 6-8 hours a week. Not much time for anything else. *tears*

I watch anime every other weekends or so in bulk.
