Simple question... what is the most addicting game genre?
Need I put some deft rhetoric into this post? Nah...

For me it used to be fantasy rpg, but lately, I'm really into tactics games. Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of the best, in my opinion, but I love Disgaea, LaPucelle and Phantom Brave as well. Disgaea alone has taken up almost a 100 hours of my time now, so yeah, I'd have to go with tactics/strategy games...

For me, it would be fantasy RPG. Just got Tales of Rebirth but haven't played it yet. Gotta find the time to play it soon. :D

For me, FPS, RPG, Stragedy, MMORPG, H-material games. Sometimes it's the fun you get out of playing the game, not the genre that matters

Fantasy RPG like final fantasy and such.
Tactics goes second such as Advance Wars and others.
Real-Time Strategy is third such as Command&Conquer Series and Blizzard games.

Fantasy RPG for me. I remember playing Dragon Warrior 4 nearly everyday when I first got it. Then later on I played it again to see what hidden treasures and trick I missed the first time around.

First Person Shooter and sport games are close behind.

Fantasy Rpgs all the way. Especially rpgs suck as the final fantasy series.

RPG (and specialy those fantasy 1) are cool but i'm an old veteran of war... :P ... the firs game on PC i had was good old RedAlert... so the story goes on, and the most addicting genre for me is strategy (still playing in Warhammer 40k) ^_^

definitely strategy.
I remember the days when playing starcraft or warcraft2 made me forget all about time. Now with disgaea, I played it over 500 hours, have a few yoshitsunes(maxed out), super robo suits(maxed out) and I still want to play more. The Super Robot Taisen games are also very good in making me forget time.

Its a definite hard one to call between RTS and RPG, but i think its a big correlation with challenge. At the end, I think the RTS might win by a hair because of the interactive element, and how we can play random people online who are better than us, or play people in a LAN party.

But RPGs have that element where they get harder and harder as you progress through the game, the the reward of either a dramatic story, good music or eyecandy, and just bragging rights makes it really strong also.

What about ones like FFXI, which are both? Lethal, I tell you. Many friends of mine have become compulsory 6th years in college because of it. I think WoW is doing the same.

Where's the puzzle games, those stupid annoying puzzle games, like puyo pop, and wario ware, that you play for 2 minutes, and discover that youve actually played for 3 hours and have completely missed your stop on the train. Theyre the most addictive of all, even though I hate them and theyre terrible. No, wait all is forgiven, dont leave me puzzle games.
Although all games are addictive(except for sports/racing games, Im a crap driver, and my sports gaming abilities are even worse) Stategy is the best, fantasy RPG'S rock, and FPS's are good too. Still, I spend too much time on all of them than is good for me ;)

I prefer RTS but I more or less test and se if Ill like the game or not, like RBO havent even stoped playing it unless my friends had drag me outof it so they could play wc3 or cs with them >_< some games are so cool u get addicted to them untill u played threw them like 30-40 times and others jus go to the dustbin after 5 mins cos its so crap ;)

All but Tonkins has got it wrong, the Puzzle genre is by FAR the most addicitng genre, look at the countless hours of playing those simple-but-yet so complicated games, like Tetris, or my personal fave game, Super Puzzle Fighter. This genre is generally neglected because of the lack of cool 'graphics', but graphics dont make a game, the gameplay does.

The 2nd most addictive is those 2D space shooters, remember R-type? or Ikaruga, damn, they are so addictive, challenging and great to play.

Strategy or Fantasy RPG for me, though Strategy slightly edges it.

It used to be all about FF games with me, but recently I have started to love platformers and action/adventure games. Games like Rachet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Copper, Maximo, PoP, stuff like that.

Beat em ups (although I suck terriby at them), FPSs and RPGs for me. I'm addicted to these three all the same

Toolix

Yes Puzzles games can be addictive, but they normally make me break my Gameboy (twice). Personally, it has to be multipayer FPS's they are damn addictive, and the perfect balance to it is a slow burning MMORPG, like World Of Warcraft or EVE Online, both are very good. :D

as much as i don't like to admit it. mmorpgs i think are the most addicting. then fps and so on. online games i have to say are the most addicting cause its more interactive.

Fantasy Rpgs all the way. Especially rpgs suck as the final fantasy series.

what you talking about final fantasy is the best rpg i played. i played 7, 8 , 9 , havn't have 10 and x-2 and i think 11 is coming out.

also fantasy rpg is the best because other after you beat the entire game it not fun and it take alot fast to beat the game. rpg take time to finish it

more so then "fantasy" rpg, i'd say the more story intensive rpg's, because in those its the story that draws you in more then anything

What else could be more addicting than a fantasy rpg?

Then again, if there's a really good strategy game, which offers longterm fun and a lot of discoveries to make, I could probably stick to this for long time.

Exo001
01-26-2005, 12:26 AM
MMORPGs are more addicting than any other game I know of. I mean come on, how many of you play a game (other than an MMORPG) where you get 50+ people together and do a quest for 13 hours in order to get one freaking ability that isn't really all that useful?

lightstar
01-26-2005, 12:54 AM

If we're going by simple numbers -- single player puzzle/card games.

I mean, tetris, solitare, and freecell are more often played than all other types of games combined...

I give them all a tie. Any genre can be just as addicting as the other depending on what that person likes.

Strat games, esp FF Tactics. I'm still hooked on that game.

I picked fantasy RPG, but for me, all types of games are worth playing as long as they have good storylines and/or interesting gameplay systems. I'm weak in shooting, sports and strategy though...

RPGs~

Everytime I play one, I am always eagar to know what happens next. But, I also feel the need to complete EVERYTHING in the game too (side quests, ultimate weapons, extra characters, etc...). Once I start an RPG, my other games usually collect specks of dust. ^_^;

I'd say mmorpg, you either don't like the game or you're addicted and plays it for months.

Overall wasting the most hours of my life would have to go to online text MUDs (about 3 years straight every day at least 3-4 to 16-24 max hours a day). Recently, it'd hafta be RTS games, namely Warcraft 3 and Dawn of War. I just haven't been able to stop playing them (although for War3 I don't play the normal game, just custom games like Ringwars and DOTA) for about a year now. I'm looking forward to Guild Wars to be a huge waste of my time when it finally comes out, too.

most addicting would be a good fantasy hentai rpg.

good thing for my life they don't make too many of those.

traditional fantasy rpgs (which i include tactical rpg and action rpg) are very addicting as well.
anyone play chinese rpgs? they are some of the best i've played in terms of story.

also addicting are puzzle games. snood?

not much a fan of love simulation games. partly because i can't read japanese. but mostly because it's not interactive enough.

I like playing simulation games but they are mostly the old ones such as Tie-Fighther, X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter, and Freespace 2. They don't seem to be making any really good ones that I know of. But, I think RPG's are more addicting because it's like an interactive book.

I think the most addicting genres are puzzle games like "Puyo puyo Fever" or 2D fighters like "Guilty Gear" and "Melty Blood".

As always, Fantasy RPGs. The old FF games, Chrono Trigger/Cross.

There is no such fun as to get a package containing some FF or Square RPGs. Then a month or two is gone, just playing all the time ignoring school, friends, soccer. Just playing.

I fear for the day when Xenosaga EP2 will come, then I

While I think Fantasy RPGs are very addicting, I have to say that to me they are not THE MOST addicting genre. To me a very addicting game genres are multiplayer party games, online FPS (lan party ^-^), or even multiplayer sports games. I don't know I guess I like working with people as well as kicking their ass in a video game.

But as what over half the people here said before, it all depends on your taste.
