View Full Version : FF I&II Dawn of Spirits
After purchasing this game and firing it up I noticed that it is rediculously more easy that the original 1987 NES FF I (which I own and played habitually until I got the new one heh heh), has anyone else noticed this too?

Final Fantasy 7 is my fave game ever.
FF6 is a close second :)
anyways, im currently playing FF 1 + 2 DoS, havent played it before so i can't comment on difficulty but its not bad at the moment. Though the very frequent random battles piss me off quite a bit.
btw, you're forgetting FF: Crystal Chronicles, Tactics and Mystic Quest in your poll.

when i made the poll it only gave me a maximun of 10 options ;)
i tried to stick with the more "traditional" FF style of gaming.

the new version of FF1 has the save anywhere option, so ofcourse its easier. I choose final fantasy 6 as my favorite, statmaxing is nice in this game all my characters were level 99 with their stats carefully boosted.

For the PS version Final Fantasy Origins you could choose wether to have it at the "original" difficulty or at easy.
Maybe they just had it switched over to easy in the GBA version?
Cause I remember the original version beeing really hard =( I barely got anywhere on it before I was tired of it and I never finished it.

apparently its coming out for the Nintendo DS, the japanese version for it has been confirmed but a US version has not been announced, still a good chance it will go into the US :)

Final Fantasy 3 from all accounts is the worst of the series. I haven't played it myself but everything I've read about it suggests its quite crap. In anycase, I personally I think VII remains the best in the series. Pre-VII were great games but due to technology boundaries they aren't as good as Post-VII. True, the gameplay was there but its the storyline and character development where the games excel. VI came close though!
My top 3 ff titles:
1. ffVII
2. ffX
3. ffVII
But 2 and 3 are almost on level with each other... its so hard to decide, I love ff games way too much! Oh and I haven't played any variations of 1 & 2 lol.

I was rather fond of Final Fantasy 2. (the original NES, later a remake for PSX).
My favorite would have to be the original Final Fantasy. Great game and you know... it's not that hard. (I suppose to you FF7 generation players it would be, seems as how FF7 was as hard as tying your shoelaces)
Top three?
1. Final Fantasy
2. Final Fantasy II (JP)
3. Final Fantasy IV (JP obviously)
last place: Final Fantasy VII (I can't believe they created such a festering cesspool of crap such as FF VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2 and so on)

Final Fantasy 5 is one great game.
Note: Finished Final Fantasy 1 yesterday (yay!), now onto FF2. :)
Guess what, guys?
I LOVE FINAL FANTASY VIII!
And I'm not afraid to say it.

FFVIII is ranked 4th in my fave FFs

Your comments are a tad harsh mate. I'm not some young fool who can't play hard games and neither are most of my friends IRL who also hold ffVII as their favourite. I also think your comment about how 7 plus are cesspools of crap is a rubbish statement since they are identical to the older ones (minus x-2) apart from the better graphics and more depth in the stories. But whatever, you sound like one of these people who want to wind others up (unconstructive criticism I think they call it), so go ahead and spout your madness.
Oh and another thing, I have played IV to VI and it isn't because they are hard (because they aren't my friend), it was just because they aren't as good that I didnt like them as much. Its called evolution, you might want to look it up!

Whoa, take it easy there, fella. You hafta understand that certain people think they "th3y r t3h l33t 4 pl4ying t3h 0ldsk0Ol". It's called "elitism". Take me, for example: I LIKE Final Fantasy VII, but don't LOVE it, probably because I knew at the time that it wouldn't age very well (and it hasn't; it looks like CRAP compared to VIII and IX), but that doesn't mean that they are crappy, but then again, that's just his opinion.

I think Final Fantasy 6 is the best FF ever simply because the story was captivating and each character was a real character with an integral part in the story and not just a playable character. I don't know why RPG developers shy away from ATB. I think it is probably one of the best battle engines.

See, people tend to like the game the played first. Hence the high response rates for VI and VII. People who started with the snes probably started with VI (since it was a big release for that system) and people who started with playstation probably started with VII. Because it's the first game you played, you hold it in higher regard and measure everything up to it's standard.
I started with VI myself. I love it and think it's a great game. But it isn't nearly the best of the FF series. The story falls apart in the second half, and by the end there is absolutely no difference between the characters (since they're all equipped with economisers and ultima, it just gets boring). I got that game to the point where I have 14 floating, glowing yellow imps named Bruce who all do 9999 dmg an attack, and that's how I beat the game. I think VII is a lot of fun to play until the 3rd disc, at which point the game basically stops, fights become far too easy with Knights of the Round, and the ending is the worst thing I've ever seen (except for the end of III, which wasn't released in the US). VII might be better in Japanese, but I kinda doubt it.
I voted for X, not because it's my favorite so much as that I think it is the strongest of the games. It has the best story-line, the best appearance, and some good gameplay. I think the skill-system is lousy in it though; I perfer the job-system from V and which was later mirrored in X-2 (which is I think the worst game of them all, except for Mystic Quest).
I think I may have gotten the most enjoyment out of either Tactics (because of the great battle system, which is of course what makes it different from the standard line of the series) or IV, because that had a great story, interesting (and different!) characters, and it was a challenge.
Each game has it's pros and cons. It's very difficult to claim which is the "best," because each has it's own area in which it does well.

I started out with FFVI and FFIV, and then I played FFVII. However, my absolute favorite is FFV. (Note: I haven't actually played the PS1 version, so I have no opinion on that.) The job system is so fun, and unlike the dead girl in FFVII, I actually felt sorry for the dead guy and his friends. (FFVII was pretty good anyways; it was a good idea to kill her off.) To those who admitted to liking FFVIII, congratulations on your courage, patience and persistence. As for me, I think that the makers were a bit perverse when they made FFVIII.

Perverse for VIII? How so? If thats perverse then X-2 is.... lol. Heh anyways sorry if I got a bit angry back there, elitism really annoys me... In anycase there are other RPGs which surpass the quality displayed in the ff series. One in paticular would have to be Xenogears.... but thats just my opinion and shouldn't be in the this thread.

I'll admit to enjoying VIII. I don't think it was a great game, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the others (like X-2). I liked the GF system for gaining abilities, and I thought that Drawing magic was a neat idea, but one that I would rather see a single character do (like as a form of blue magic) instead of have the entire magic system work off of it. I also remember spending many hours attempting to beat Ultima Weapon, hours which I enjoyed. I also like the story over-all, even though my girlfriend keeps complaining about how contrived it becomes. The ending is cool too, one of my favorites in the series.

The drawing idea was stupid, took too much time and made you powerful.. real quick.
However, FFVIII had very good soundtrack, neat designs, a decent enough story (end battles were terrible) and had some good characters (Rinoa is the best!)
My Ranked FF order:
1. FFVII
2. FFVI
3. FFV
4. FFVIII
5. FFI
6. FFIX
7. FFIV
7. FFX
yet to play FF X2 and FFII (im still on this)
Yeah they did, its a port of the Playstation1 version "Origins"
There you had a choice to do normal or easy, well as you can expect normal 'd be the version that had to be endured in 1987.
They probably took the easy version since its easier for the crowd:p
my favourites though, are afcourse:
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy Tactics (psx) (you forgot to add in the list both gba and psx version, shame on you;))
I love the baddies :p
Sephiroth was sooo sexy-awesome XD and Kefka was purely insane, wich I loved about him.
Final Fantasy Tactics called upon some good tactical knowledge, wich I love:p
I have the full Final Fantasy Collection including a lot of other squaresoft titles for the psx.

my favorite was 7, because it got me into rpgs. i got the game a couple of years after it was released, and fell in love with it. after that FFT, FF8, etc untill i got hooked. ive never played FF1 or 2, the iea of having it on my gba is too enticing to pass up, so ill probably get dawn of souls.
BTW, i dont think anybody liked FFTA enough, cuz man that game sucked.
and from what i heard, a lot of people agree.

i thought FF:TA was brilliant, granted i havent played the PSX version, i thoguht FF:TA was a nice change away from traditional ffs, though it is highly repetitive and difficulty curve was all over the place (sometimes hard, sometimes easy).
I liked the game though, was a nice change from the norm :)

if you liked FFTA, you'll love FFT. it doesnt have the moin focus of going to the pub, and finding jobs and such, it is instead focused on job classes, storyline(very cool, sinister even) and well to me just overall better than FFTA. It also has a lot of sidequests.

The age-old conflict of which FF is the best. Please note that all comments in this post are simply my opinion and are in no way a broad generalization on this subject. With that said, onto the soapbox I go!
For me, FFVI was the ultimate FF. The story was involved and each of the characters played a fair part in the series. Was there really a main character in this one? I wouldn't be so sure. Each game in the series was innovative in some way upon its release. FFVII was great because it introduced us to CGI storytelling, while FFX brought voice-overs to the mix. To really find the best one, you'd have to strip away all the glitter and get down to the bare-bones game itself. Even then, they are all so different from each other.
My big beef is the sequels. Square goes ten games before buckling to the screams of the fans; a good run I suppose, but it sure ticked off all the fans who had been screaming nine games prior. Yes, FFX was a beautiful game with a heart-tugging story. It's probably my second favorite. But, if you gave all the games the same glitzy treatment, the tides would turn. If FFVI had the FFX treatment, it would be absolutely stunning. I could buy that and never have to buy another FF game again (of course, I would anyway). Scenes like the opera house scene, Kefka poisoning the water supply, and Kefka killing off the Espers would probably bring me to tears presented in gorgeous CGI and voice-over. Hey, SquareEnix, quit making spin-off after spin-off of FFVII and give one of the other FFs a chance!!
Top Favorite Final Fantasy games (removing the glitter):
1.) Final Fantasy VI / 6 (the US III / 3)
2.) Final Fantasy X / 10
3.) Final Fantasy IV / 4 (the US II / 2)

my favorite would be FFIX. i guess because it had the 4 character battle thing which was pretty fun. Also the really long story to give me millions of mindless hours to play i mean any game with 4 disks of play come on. Also the card game they had that was good enough to become a seperate game in FFXI. Also the most important and end all reason that sold me on FFIX which was VIVI :D

FFII+soul or rebirth is so far my fav.
FFI was good but lacked the strong story elements that I love in the FF series
I also own:
FFV (playing though now)
FFVI (which i'm going to start after I beat VII)
FFVII (on final dengoun but i'm not strong enough so i'm going to finish after I beat V)
FF:T (I started it but it' sort of annoying me right now so i'll get to it sooner or later)
FF:TA (the frist FF I ever beat)
FF:CC (got bored or it so i'll beat it later)
FF:VII (frist FF I ever owned but I wasn't realy old enough to under stand the GF system, plus i'm stuck of a boss and it won't let my leave the dungeon so i'll restart it after VI)
and I played FFX and FFX-2 at a friends house but I don't own them..yet. plus I plan to buy the PSX verson of FF:IV+chono trigger next I go shopping.

FF1: good, but i get that "eh" feeling...
FF2: much better
FF3-5: don't remember specifics. one of them sucked badly though
FF6: i got stuck. i heven't played since.
FF7: a great game. one of the best rpg's on the playstation
FF8: THE BEST GAME EVER CONCIEVED!!!!! SO GOOD. Rinoa ;_; so cute....i love...
FF9: massively underrated. better than 7 by far.
FFX: yuna....yuna......she is just so......wow......and the game is perfect.
FFXI: never played
FFCC: never played. (no ffgamer friends)
FFX-2: looked forward for this too much. still 10/10 but not as good as FFX
FFTA: the most fun you can have with a GBA
FF12: I can't wait....
I think I'll do what chompy did and do a list.
FF: Beat this a few times when I was little; finished w/ 4 White Wizards when I was ten. Took me three months. Biggest waste of time EVER.
FFII (NES): First time FF ever had a storyline. The stat level up system was easily abused, and the magic system was awful. level up fire, cure, and blizzard; you can beat everything else to death with weapons.
FFIII: Best on the NES. Class systems, hard bosses, Largest final dungeon area (Labyrinth of the Ancients, down Styx ten floors, up Styx ten floors, back through Labyrinth to heal at Airship and save, back through Labyrinth again, up ten floors of Crystal Tower, fight Neo Zande, Astral Plane, fight four TOUGH bosses, fight Cloud of Darkness (Not easy)....whew!
FFIV:Third best OST in Final Fantasy, with some MONSTER tracks like "Inside the Giant", "The Dreadful Fight", and "The Red Wings" reprise used as the final dungeon music in the Japanese release.
FFV: Decent for a Final Fantasy game, with the best game mechanics in the series appearing in the form of the job system. Had one of the coolest final dungeon areas in the series as well.
FFVI:The beginning of Square's golden age. Tied with FFVIII for best soundtrack. The story in this one was just FANTASTIC, with character development for everyone, although some characters were just plain BETTER than others (Edgar, Sabin, Terra, Celes). In most games, you try to prevent world destruction. In THIS game, you fail to stop it and decide to punish Kefka post-cataclymsically for his crimes. COOL.
FFVII:First in 3D, the story here is as dark as FFVI, maybe even darker. This game had the largest amounts of GREAT moments, Flower Girl's stabbing aside, like the sneaking around Shinra Tower, The Whirlwind Maze, The City of the Ancients, sneaking around Junor Harbor, and Cloud's Subconsciousness (that last one blew me away). Had a few wonderful tracks, too, like "You Can Hear the Cry of The Planet", the "Main Theme", and "On That Day, 5 Years Ago", despite the very poorly synthesized sound in the game. HOWEVER, this game had perhaps the most disappointing final area I've ever played through. I mean, The Northern Crater was just PATHETIC. But after plodding through that short, creatively EMPTY series of repeated textures, you are treated to one of the most grand endings in video game history, which has a catch: The climax occurs in the last few seconds of the ending, when you discover the secret behind the Lifestream's rally.
Tactics: This game had the most politically-charged story I've ever seen in a game with some of the toughest battles I've ever fought. Assassins? Go to hell.
FFVIII: I'm partial. This one's my favorite. The first game to utilize dramatic Disc Finales, like the assassination attempt on Sorceress Edea and The Garden Clash. Also had two of my favorite FF characters Quistis (I love hot blondes who don't act pretentious, Celes included) and Selphie (who may or may not be legal, I won't trust the instruction manual's judgement). Featuring a FANTASTIC OST, beautiful locales (Balamb, Balamb Garden, Dollet [my favorite], Fisherman's Horizon, Deling City, Timber, FREAKIN' ESTHAR) which obviously inspired FFX's cities, and an extremely progressive gameplay mechanic: the Junction System, Which involved a LOT of drawing, but could power your characters across multiple discs without ever having to change spells (if you do it right). Hell, I never even had to look at another GF after taking back the Garden. Also, best ending in the series, if you consider how it ties into the opening movie and a certain conversation Squall and Rinoa have toward the end of Disc Three.
FFIX: I liked this one a bunch, too. Disc Finales abound in the game as well. Kuja floating defiantly amidst the flaming destruction of Terra? HELL YEAH. This game had great characters that were even on par with characters from Lunar games! Also liked the ability point system and class type, but hated how damn slow the battles were. VII and VIII had battles where the characters attacked as soon as the previous attacker was finished. Here, we wait a few seconds between each attack, meaning someone's AT Gauge is ALWAYS full from all the waiting.
FFX: Very pretty, with a neat story that takes too damn long to get good (much like Legaia, unfortunately). I didn't like the sphere grid system, simply because some characters were more useful than others in battles, leaving the others out in the cold with low spere levels when you actually needed them. Wakka for flying enemies? Check. Auron and Kimahri for armored enemies? Check. Tidus for small, quick enemies (What a demographic)? Check. Yuna for....well...healing..oh yeah! and Aeons! Check. Lulu for making everyone else useless with her wicked magic talents?....Check. :(
Tactics Advance: Like Tactics minus the story and plus the tedious law system and oh yeah Ritz is a biznitch.
And I haven't played X-2, but the people who've played it are more divided than FFVII / FFVIII debaters. My little sister's played it, and she says it's cool if you're into Cartoon Network's Totally Spies with a little extra girl/girl flirtaciousness. I fully enjoy the latter, just not when it masquerades as a FF Game.

FFI - DoS version, nice looking, quite a decent length and it basically 'classic' rpg style. Introduction of secret bosses is a nice extra which i enjoyed quite a lot. Too bad, character development and story wasn't there. 7/10
FFII - DoS version, better characters and story wasn't too bad i guess, lack of direction spoils it for me. Decent length and good to look at, and the battle/levelling system was great. 8/10
FFIV - didn't like this, characters were sparsly developed and msot of them 'come and go'. Story was better but game didn't feel great at all. Too bad. 5/10
FFV - Great battle/levelling/job system, superb music, tough bosses and more importantly, characters were great! Too bad story didn't hold up, but otherwise a great game. 8/10
FFVI - Amazing graphics, great OSt, massive amounts of characters, tons fo extras, superb story and provides great enjoyment throughout. Brilliant game and is my 2nd fave FF. 9/10
FFVII - What can isay? The best game ever for me, engrossing characters, great story, settings were ncie to look at, extras aplenty, great challenge, battle/level system was done well and is basically amazing. 9.5/10 (Cait Sith brought it down :) )
FFVIII - The best OST in the FF series ever, graphics are better than FFVII, Rinoa is one of the best FF characters but everything else wasn't amazing. 7/10
FFIX - Back to classic FF roots? Not really, didn't appeal to me, characters were boring and uninventive and story wasn't as good as previous games. 5/10

Yeah, the GBA FF I's extremely easy. The save system contributes, but not quite as much as the rate you gain levels at. For whatever reason, the encounter rate seems to be a lot higher than it was on the NES. Bad design, really, since it just makes dungeon crawling easy AND irritating.
Anyway, Tactics reigns as my favorite game in the series, perhaps because it was made by Quest. It's too bad FFTA was so disappointing.
I'm not a big fan of the Final Fantasy series in general, though I do find some of them pretty decent.
