View Full Version : Which VIDEO GAMES do you dislike the most, DESPITE their popularity?

In the tradition of the thread about animes that people hate despite the fact that they are popular, I'm making this thread about games that are hated even though alot of people play them or they get great reviews.
I personally dislike most of the later FF games (6 and onwards), because of the high number of random battles, which also have a very long intro and very slowly unfolding turns (often times). Also the music (in ff6 at least) is restarted after every battle. Personally, my alternatives to these games are Suikoden 1-2 and Star Ocean (the original).
I don't like Warcraft 3's normal mode (non-custom maps), because it just seems too imbalanced (explaining exactly why would take a while), and in TFT the economy changed too much for me, since I was to lazy to relearn it.
Finally, I hate DAOC Trials of Atlantis with a passion. At first, I left DAOC because I didn't want to spend absurd amounts of time getting to level 50 and getting the equipment necessary to be really competative in pvp. However, about a year or two after I left, I got to come back for free for 15 days. I bought the expansions since it seemed that they had improved the game since I left (pvping gave exp for example). To my joy, they had made it much easier to reach level 50. However, they introduced two new treadmills which are in my opinion some of the worst in any game (Artifacts and Masterlevels). First of all, both of these are designed mostly for level 50 characters with good equipment. Second of all, some of these (especially the Masterlevels), required alot of people to complete. Some of the Master levels needed like over 40 people, and took about 13 hours straight in one sitting to complete (there are 10 masterlevels). Artifacts are not any better. First of all, you have to kill this monster that only spawns once every 6 hours or more, who MIGHT drop the item you need. If he does drop it, you have to be lucky enough to be the person in the group who gets the item (by random number rolling). After you finally get the item, you are still not done. You have to camp this group of monster that you can actually solo for a great period of time (sometimes a week) to get up to THREE more items you need to activate the artifact. AFTER THAT YOU ARE STILL NOT DONE. You have to level up the artifact by hunting in a specific place for a period of time until it reaches level 10 to unlock all of its abilities.
*looks at the above paragraph and sighs*
I hope no one made a thread like this recently, since I searched and didn't find one.

NFSU. Partly because I'm not a big fan of racing games. But I hated the menu's. The interface was just aweful. I only raced two/three races and I was tired of the game. Only game ever I think I quit within an hour or so. And I played A LOT of games.

1) Tetris - (yeah we know it's only 'cause you suck at it Brakespear, gosh, why don't you be honest for once :D )
2) Pac-Man - (see above)
3) Every Mario game since Super Mario World (especially Mario 64 - nice 3D, now where's the excitement)
4) ISS Pro Evolution - it's hardly intuitive, now, is it?
5) Morrowind - got it for Xmas, played it for 10 hours, don't undertsand... it's no Neverwinter Nights.
6) Halo - combat evolved, indeed.
And as for WannabeDamned above, cussin' up Harvest Moon- I shall cast Meteo if you persist in this - you are damned already! :D

1. Black and White! My sworn game enemy ever, back then it was so overhyped and overated it wasn't funny. I tried it out, played for 30 mintes, got bored and went back to playing FFV. One of the most terrible POS that i've played, granted its not popular now as before, but still...
2. Halo, really.. i've only played the PC version but i have no idea what was so good about this. Single Player was 'meh' at best and multiplayer was just 'ok' (granted, Co-op from Xbox was probably the only thign that saved it). Overated hyped game, and the only thing that it supporting the X-box with its total lack of game quality...
i got to go to bed now.. but when i think of some more (and i will) i just add some later.

There's a General Gaming Forum? lol sorry about the post on this forum, but I hope no one really minds.
Oh yes, and DAOC = Dark Age of Crummyness, that got worse with each patch, or so it seemed (imagine pking someone in D2 who is a sorceress, while you are a barbarian, and your max resistances were 25%).

I personally think that halo is nothing special at all, except for the fact that I consider it the only console fps that I actually liked, but in comparison to many computer fps games its really nothing new, original, or notable in my opinion. Also the computer version of Halo 1 had a really crummy framerate on my computer (as in, it would work fine at certain points and at others it would slow down alot, no matter what my settings were, and the graphics of this game don't warrant this kind of slowdown IMO).

hmm, i do have to admit i disliked DAOC a bit. mainly what pisses me off from online games, esp MMORPGs, is the people. some people can be really stupid sometimes. but then in DAOC, people had 2 accounts so they can lvl up a buff bot. man, none of my friends were going to pay extra for a buff bot to do better in RVR. however that was like the only frickin way to be victorious in the stupid RVR. and yea they got worse with each patch, i dont remember which ones as its been over 2 years. i mainly quit cuz my 6 months were up, wanted to take a break, and i just hit lvl 50 eldritch and 46 bard. XD but thats MMORPGs for ya.

I hated buff bots. Also, I hate monthly payments, I mean, I pay $40 for the game, and then I have to pay $10-15 a month in order to play it? That's so messed up. In addition, usually there are alot of hardcore people who just level up like crazy and levels are very slow and hard to get later on. The only MMO that I liked was AC the original, but that got boring after a while naturally. I haven't played it for years so I don't know how it is now though. (But it had the worst death penalty out of any game I've ever played, and I hated the upkeep of items later on, but maybe that had to do with the fact that I killed level 192 monsters at level 33).

yea, monthly pay gets to u. it really sucks. payed 60 bucks for AC, 70 for DAOC, 80 bucks for FFXI. (is there a patteren?) no more! lol i feel sorry for my brother, i got him in the MMORPG unexpectedly and he got sucked in this beta-free game RYL. now hes playing WoW and is totally absorbed. my first MMORPG was AC, i liked it alot. i died so many times one time and i was pretty much naked with all that vitae whatever it was. highest was a 45 mage and 40 swordsman.

Most, if not all games with 'Kickass graphics' or 'realistic physic engines' as its main selling point. For example, Doom 3. It's always dark, not scary, repetitive, and the damn flashlight pisses me off. What happened to those games where you just walk around and kill stuff? In doom 2 the main stradegy was conserve your ammo, make monsters attack each other, and solve puzzles. The emphasis today is concentrated too much on the realism of the game and lacks what made games attracted me in the first place: the fact that it's unrealistic and creative. Sure, being able to see each and every single facial hair might be impressive to look at for a few minutes, but after that, its just repeating itself.
I have been so dissapointed with the recent releases of games, i am now playing GBA games. They may not have graphics that are compared to other consoles, but atleast the gamepaly is better.
Ps. i spent around 60 hours or so playing Super Robot Taisen wars R and D. Currently playing Golden sun Lost ages.
edit: the fact that i had to waste 5 minutes of my life watching Sepiroth's final Supernova attack was horrible.

So true Doom 3 was really annoying with that flashlight. I can't remember how many times I died because I was shooting in the dark. Plus I'm not that great on PC games so it was even harder.

Far Cry - didn't like it at all, it was a very long game of 'Hide and Seek' with nearly every badguy dying from the same tactic that i used (hide behind a rock and just shoot when it comes over). Though pretty to look at and the levels are enormous, it wasn't a great game in terms of gameplay. Sorry.
Quake 3 - Ok, here's the real deal. UT is a far superior game, gameplay-wise, that is a major fact! Q3 is a far superior game, graphics-wise, that is also a major fact! I didn't like Q3, despite its better graphics, not enough replay value and UT was much better in terms of numbers of mods, mutators and teamplay modes. UT = ROX, Q3 = SUX
Sims - Hmmm.. lose my social life in order to build virtual people's social life.. not my cup of tea. Fun for oohhh.. an hour or so, then gets tedious.. fast.

Resident Evil - If you know about the capcom RE 1.5 conspiracy and how they include the new features of this chapter as innovation in RE2, RE3, RE:CV and RE0 when all of them were supposed to be in this game wichs never came out, you know why I hate RE. At least RE 4 is going to be diferent...
Sims - Boring, Zzzzzzzzz......
Counter Strike - Buy weapons, headshot, wait, buy weapons, headshot, wait,... You wait more than play (and don't forget that there is always someone cheating in each server). I prefer 1000 times UT or any FPS multiplayer.

Games I thought were overrated:
Final Fantasy 8 through X-2: These were just pretty slow and boring. 8 was all about angst, and you couldn't force yourself to truely like squall no matter how hard you tried. 9 was enjoyable, but it was also childish and it's character design was kinda bizarre looking. Also, it advertised the return of the crystals, but there was only one crystal in the game. X (or 10) was fairly childish, and it left me with an empty feeling. None of the characters truly appealed to me, and the blitzball thing was a joke. X-2 (10-2) was the worst. It was dress up Final Fantasy Barbie! The plot was half-@zzed and boring. The best part was the character design. It was a giant excuse for fanservice.
Sims: If you are so bored with your own life that you have to create a false life in SimsWorld and live through THAT, then you have my sympathy. It's like being a personal God for the perpetually stupid.
Ghost Recon: Don't know why... Just didn't like it.

Games I thought didn't deserve their high ratings:
-Chrono Cross: I don't see any time-travelling here...
-Final Fantasy VIII: too much angst and wasted storytelling
-Final Fantasy X: really boring
-Final Fantasy X-2: Final Fantasy BARBIE! Yeesh.
-Halo 2: They should've just stopped at the original Halo because the story wasn't just convoluted, it was also poorly executed. Oh, the flashlight doesn't help at all in dark areas.
-Initial D: based on a good idea, but really should have focused more on driving skills such as executing drifts on hairpin curves.
-WarCraft III: gives me the feeling that the Night Elves and the Orcs got the short end of the stick.

- Warcraft III: Just didn't like it

- Counter Strike: time to move on after 5 years perhaps?

FF9, FFX-2 are the only 2 games I hate in the whole FF series.
FF9- Chibi characters. Main character with a tail. Main female character not pretty enough. Theme song is not good enough compared to ff8
FFX-2 - some made up story because FFX was popular. Bad storyline. The fact that there is another always trying to ruin the party's plans make it seem like Pokemon's Team Rocket vs Ash.
If you understand FF8, then you will like it for sure. I asked many people. People who didn't understand didn't like it, vice versa.
The card game needs some practice. If you want to test you skills, play cards with Edea and Headmaster in 3rd disc. I think they are the hardest card players in the game.
I'm biased, because I think FF8 is the best FF game. :D

Well.. Personally, I guess i pretty much dislike the entire HALO series, yea i did not get to try out the Xbox version nor did i get to 'touch' halo 2 but spending 10 mins on HALO single player mode on the pc is more than enough for me, completely turns me off. Then came along FFX-2.. Too easy for mi i guess, get urself a dark knight, A mage (fully mastered all the skills) and a alchemist (hyper pot and stuff) and u're on ur way. I am pretty amazed at this board, well, at least there's no die hard halo fan boy, who will flame the living daylights out of u when u tell them tat u didn't like halo, well tat happens in other message boards.. I never finished any of the final fantasy games I played (7,8,9) - got bored in the middle:
ff7 - too many fights, too time consuming to get KOTR.

I never liked Chrono Trigger. I played it through a couple times, but I could not for the life of me understand why people actually enjoyed it. It was clever enough I suppose, but I never thought it was really worth my time. As for the Final Fantasy games; I disliked VIII because of the draw and junction system. VII, X, and X-2 were pretty tolerable in comparison.

Every Final Fantasy from VIII - X-2. FFX seemed to be alright, but that sphere system and the character - enemy relation...swap in a character that is strong against a certain monster due to their job/abilities and they kill the monster in one hit (maybe two...at least thats how I remember it)

Id say the number one worst ever - Final Fantasy 8
It annoyed the hell out of me. It was about military, one huge HUGE HUGE hated thing by me. Im so sick of all these damn military games, never thought square would make a move so bad. What killed it more is the gunblade. I f'ing hate guns in games. Thats no way for a true warrior to fight. The characters feel stale, and I hate how realistic they are.
The anime feel to the previous games was completely disregarded, and thats what I pick up games in the final fantasy series for.........
When I look for a game, i IMMEDIATELY look for SD (super deformed) and chibi characters, then make sure its not a friggin FPS game.
Also on the hated list are:
The halo series. Military, no chibi or sd, drawn too detailed not cartoony enough. Halo has got to be one of the weakest games Ive tried. Little man in a green suit running around shootin things, feels like starship troopers.......
The FPS genre has been played out, and the only true FPS Ive ever enjoyd was Quake 3, and ONLY with the DBZ Bid For Power mod installed (and then, only the version of it with the original DBZ characters in it)
I despise all FPS games other than that......
I hate racing games, with the exception of Mario Kart 64. Absolutely adore the neon thingys and music on rainbow road - the only reason Iever even boot up my xbox is to play through that stage in Surreal 64.
Sports games. Enough said. Hate playing sports. Hate watching sports. Have never believed in competition. Never will.
War games / military games - nuff said
AND I get so mad when I see these stupid mmorps comin out......... Lineage 2, World Of Warcraft, and the like. I cannot STAND that detailed crap. I like my graphics cartoony. The only Mmorpgs I can play are Pristontale (superb, level 70 fighter) And I LOVE LOVE LOVE Seven Hearts Online (I refuse to call it by ROSE ONLINE, the name they changed it to in America, I mean god keep the Korean names intact) RO's graphics are right on par with what I adore.
Final Fantasy XI I picked up expecting games as great as Final Fantasy 7 with Sephiroth the best designed villain ever, or the absolutely perfect character art / design and feel or final fantasy 9 (my favorite in the series)
Boy was I disappointed.
I dont like FF X ------- Simply due to the fact that they got rid of the concept of an oveworld map to run around freely, i mean all good rpgs have an overworld map.
Graphically, the game I was most impressed with ever was Paper Mario 2, it had it all. :-)
But my favorite game of ALL TIME is the amazing Kingdom Hearts!!!!!!!!!!

GTA series. Although I liked the free-form factor of it, I hated the premise and found myself bored after a while.
And I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree with me that a game like Madden NFL 200(x) shouldn't consistently be voted '#1 game of the year'. That like an insult to all the great games that got made and a sad pathetic take on American gaming.

I could jump on the Final Fantasy 7 bandwagon no matter how overrated it is, but for now I'll go with Metal Gear Solid for the PSX. Sure, it's got an interesting, if at times stupidly played out story ("There's a guy already decomposing in here. Wait, didn't I see him die an hour ago? I wonder what this means?"), but the gameplay was simply too simple to me.
The guards don't even change patterns if I remember correctly. It's hide and seek stealth, which isn't without its good points, but in the end there's too little emphasis put on the gameplay. As for the weirdness of it and its sequel, well, "Post modern" my ass. The story just wasn't enough to carry this game for me, and I couldn't really go back to it after seeing both of the endings and spending 5 or 10 minutes rampaging with the stealth camo. Definitely required playing, but it could have been better.
Also, I noticed some people put Chrono Trigger, and as much as I love the game, I do have to agree that it's often over praised. Frankly, it didn't contribute a whole lot to the genre, as many of its main features (Different, interconnected worlds and combination techniques specifically) had been seen before. Regardless, it was the execution of all of these elements that made it shine. Excellent pacing combined with a story interesting enough to keep you going made the game fun even on subsequent playthroughs for me, especially with the alternate endings. The atmosphere, really did it for me, though. There was excellent music throughout, and the character animation and color choices for the different time periods really helped the ambience.
The simplicity of the character/ability development hurt it for me, though. Everyone always pretty much turns out the same, and I wish there had been some kind of customizable element (Like with the Espers in FF6 for example) to make the characters a little different each time. But, I think it says a lot that the presentation can carry simple (Though pretty fun) gameplay, and that's what makes the game memorable to me.

Which games do I dislike the most despite their popularity? Easiest question I've heard all day: GTA3 and its sequels. Most overrated games ever. They make me cry every time I try to play them and can't jump or run or do anything. Then I go play Ninja Gaiden because the controls actually work.

well i mostly hate every sport game there is.
FF9 is too childish imo and that made me really hate it.
CS has imo the worst players when compared to other fps games.I once tried to play it,went to server my friend recommended to me and tried to play there.Since i were a new player in it, i made mistakes here and there.I thought the players would help me learn the game, but all i get is "l0l what is that n00b doing!!!" and so on.Also i don't like HL and HL2 since i don't really see what is so great about them.
Halo and Halo2 are way too much hyped. They are too childish.Aliens that look almost cute and run away yelling with stupid voices?I can think better use of money than buy those games.
WoW and basicly every mmorpg there is.I had some fun with them but in the end, what's the point to play a game when you can't beat it?Sure that warrior with games best armor that is lv 99 is cool to have, but still :p
And i just have to say something about Conquer Online,I liked it really much cause it had good people playing but the idea that you can buy dragonballs sucks. Not really fun to see people really low level compared to you with all super items on them, when i have worked days for my all elite items :(
In the end i got really tired about this game and stopped playing it.

GTA - I never liked it much, while having so much freedom is nice, it gets boring quickly. I only play it for missions and once thats done, I hardly ever touch it again.
Halo - Didn't see what was so special about it, and the repeated levels made me want to stop really badly.
Final Fantasy - I don't like them, not one bit. I find it way too repetitive.
Gunbound - My friends play it but I find it nothing more than a dumb down worms where you get to dress up your characters.

FFX - when i first saw the character design, i cried. it reminded me of eccentric japanese musicians, trying to reach more mainstream consumer imo. definitely the MOST SELL-OUT RPG ive ever known.
super robot taisen - lots of brainless sequels, and even after reaching ps2, they still hav SD graphics. makes me want to puke
pokemon - kiddy, overrated and milked dry, it shouldve been called pukemon

Top two popular games I dislike are GTA and Halo.
When GTA3 came out, my friends must have played it non-stop for 3 months. My girlfriend even played the daylights out of it! With all the hype and the amount of over-exposure, I really started to despise it. I've never even picked up a controller while it's on. I'll be glad when this whole "over-glorified driving games that let you beat up hookers" phase blows over.
Halo annoys me even more. I've never seen people go so bonkers over a game like this...and I've played GoldenEye! Seeing as I refuse to give any more money to Microsoft than they already force me to give them, I don't own an X-Box or a copy of "Halo: Super Ultra Platinum Spank-Yo-Mamma Director's Cut Edition". This is another game that's all hype. I remember when I played this game the first time...when it was called Wolfenstein.
I know I'm being mean, but that's just my opinion. I'm not a big fan of driving games or FPS games, so it's not surprising that I don't care for these two titles. I'm sure they're enjoyable to some, but I'll take a good RPG or Adventure game any day.

XD Main reason why i dont like ff x and ffx-2 it just felt wrong not having the overworld map. (Maybe im too use to old school rpgs) I like walking around on the map and not being stuck on a linear path  Thats why i must get TES 4 Oblivion GOD THAT GAME WILL KICK ASS
Mortal Kombat!! The very reason why Americans should not make fighting games...

Final Fantasy 7 Coz its too easy ,.. its hard NOT to be able to finish this game
and i cant think of one good character in the game xpt Sephiroth
it feels like this game started the "lets make games even retarded 5yeard olds can beat" period
that still is with us(most games made after PSX came along suffer from this illness)
after 7 it just went downhill
but 7 was for me the biggest dissapointment

I'll forward this to my rant on Halo: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24897 (it's the 4th post).
I also never saw what was so great about Final Fantasy 7. It had bland, unoriginal music (Aeries' theme is just a remix of Celes' from FF6! How critics consider them independently as great compositions is beyond me), boring story and uninteresting characterizations. It was nothing more than a glorified tech demo IMO.
Then there's also the Gran Turismo series. I'm the kind of gamer who likes to fool around. This means intentionally crashing my car, driving backwards, forcing rivals to tail gate while honking incessantly and basically perpatrating every other contrary and unconventional acts in a racing games (and games in general). GT--under liscensing agreements--was not permitted to show collision damage or any detracting aspect on the car models, so enjoyment with those aforemention elements were limited. Though it would seem hypocritical considering the manufacturers, themselves, don't find it a problem to show crash test tapes on their commercials to advertise their safety ratings. I mean showing your product being mutilated in reality is okay...but when it's simulated that's insulting?
Also, not that I don't think it's a bad game, but I just don't think it should be as praised as much as people have done so. It's the GTA series (III to San Andreas in particular). Terrible camera controls, N64-like graphics, clunky combat/shooting system, horrible load times and cheap and frustrating AI. It's a good game in general, but too many technical flaws to actually be considered "great" in my books.
Overall, if I were to rate FF7, Halo 1-2 and the GT series, they'd all be given 7.5s. GTA series, because I had more fun: 8.0-8.5s.

The worst game that I played: Enter the Matrix, I know all the video games magazines and websites gave a low score to this game but I've seen a lot of people that actually liked this piece of junk that was Enter the Matrix; horrible graphics, bad music (only a few of them was ok), stupid and repetitive gameplay and so on.
I'm not sure if this game was overated but what I really sure is that Enter the Matrix is a terrible game.

Viewtiful Joe (Gamecube versions). Yes, thank you, Capcom, for following in Retro Studios' footsteps by forcing you to use the worst button on the Gamecube pad ALL THE GOD DAMNED TIME, the L button. WHY USE AN ANALOG TRIGGER FOR AN ON/OFF FUNCTION?! It ****ing HURTS to play for more than 15 minutes, and it takes days for the pain to subside. Hooray for RSD. The whole series is bent around trying to play in slow motion all the time.... right.

I have always been a great fan of console rpg, try to play as many as i can
but then i slowly get tired of them, although i still play them selectively, 3 reasons:
1. random encounters - get really annoying the longer you are in the game
2. worse still, ridiculous puzzles with random encounters on
3. the need of wakthrough - random events, special equipments, puzzles and 'good ending' - just can't get all of them without the need of walkthrough especially the ridiculous 100% for ffx-2 just piss me off and stopped halfway as i have to play the entire game with walkthrough

I'm usually very tolerant to most games. :p Some that irked me were the new Suikoden (4th one) and the 4th Breath of Fire, as well. I liked the other Suikodens and BoFs. =_= Those are the only ones I can think of right now. oo;; And no, I don't have anything against 4th games... I adored FF4 for example. ;p
I also didn't really enjoy FFX and its conclusion...

Final Fantasy 9 (I really love the FF series but this was bad. The only thing that kept me playing it are the FMV's which everyone critiscies for there being too many in the game. I say keep 'em coming otherwise I would of got bored very quickly. The card game subquest is EXTREMELY frustrating especially when compared to Final Fantasy 8 which was quite fun).
There are also games that I like but I think are overated. The main contender is Final Fantasy 7. It took a while for me to get into it. Xenogears is another. There are times when it can drag and be difficult.

lol, Exo001 said something like "FF6 and onwards 'coz of their high number of random battles", but I seem to remember playing all the way through FF1 and every step or two I'd get a random battle. :D
I'd say FF1 was the only FF game that I actually got high-leveled before beating the game instead of lucking my way through, because of that constant battling. :p
Anyway, the games I really don't like despite their popularity, are the GTA games. My aunt bought me GTA3 when it was still kinda new, and I played some of it for a little less than a week. I don't like games that are too open-ended, to where you're aimlessly wandering all over the place for hours before you get something done.
I know it's just me though, I don't like too much freedom, it distracts from the real point of the game. (unless that point is to run over pimps and pedestrians..)
For this same reason, I didn't really like Spiderman 2 either. I loved the swinging, climbing, and fighting, but I hated that I had no idea what to do and that city is so damn big for getting lost in.
I would also say I don't like the Halo games, but I've only watched others play so I can't say much. But damn Xbox's smooth-as-clay, and shinier-than-the-sun models bullcrap!!
GTA3: horrible controls, repetitive gameplay that just wasn't much fun.
La Pucelle Tactics: I really did not like the characters or the gameplay system at all. Maybe if I hadn't played Disgaea or other SRPGs I would have liked it better, but the whole conversion thing and the nauseating character voices / script killed it for me.
Wild Arms series: Wild West-based RPG? No thank you. Boring as heck, little character customization, slow gameplay.

hmm
i notice alot of ppl saying abt "gameplay is boring and repetitive" especially for rpgs, but seriously, how much gameplay can you get out of rpg games like FF or Suikoden or Wild Arms or any rpg. Its the same old encounter enemy, customize weapons, level up characters, explore world, solve quests etc. This is wat rpg is about, cept they give a tweak here and there resulting in new features and extras. Not to mention with a good storyline, how well it is told, and how a character fits into your heart.
The overhyped games i would say will be SUPER COOL REALISTIC sports games, or mindless FPS which i really find no meaning in playing them. Yeah its fun at 1st but it gets boring after the 1st hour of play, and almost each release is the same as the previous except for improved graphics. I juz don't understand how they got no.1 rankings.
maybe i'm more into games with good story-telling...
and the comment abt Super Robot Taisen, there are a few SRW which uses 3D and non SD-Graphics, like Super Robot Scramble Commander, or Super Robot Regimen. But of course i still find the old school SRW with SD sprite animations are better. This game is a game for fans and majority of the fans like it this way.
Aww, Wild Arms? I agree with all but the first Wild Arms game. ;)
Point taken, but I still feel that even WA1 has not held up to the test of time like some of the other PSX RPGs. I agree it was the best of the series, though.
Wild West and most modern settings have never been my cup of tea. I much prefer sci-fi, fantasy, or even steampunk settings (I cry for the fact there will never be an Arcanum 2).

Hate:
FFX-2, Hated the story and the cast
FF9, The character designs were terrible and as well as the overall design of the game
Kingdom Hearts, I don't mind the Disney stuff, but i hated the battle system for this.
Wild Arms3, every dungeon is- Hallway, Puzzle room, hallway, puzzle room, etc. The story was uninspiring as well. the only thing that kept me going was a no ramdom battle gameshark code.
Zelda: Wind Waker, Not the graphics, but the overall world. Sailing around looking for the next destination for 30 mins is not my idea of fun.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, The whole judge thing pissed me off, lucily there were some codes to get rid of it.
Anything that has the word Pokemon in it.
As for FF8, I thought it was too easy, I drew 100 of everything I could find and spammed the main charcter's limit break on everything. The summoms were way over the top in this one, especially that last one that takes an hour to blow up the galaxy.
I thought this one had the coolest airship though.

FF8 - Simply couldn't get into it as I did with VII and the previous titles.
GTA San Andreas- Offers a lot in non linear progression, but combat is basic, characters play off of a variety of offensive stereo types, the size in general works against you considering the more expansive your territory the further you have to go to defend it, and the whole game is geared toward the "thug life" wannabes.
Metroid Prime - I just can't adjust to the cross hair continuely moving back to the neutral position.

FF8 because of their magic system, the mother f'ing card game, and the long ass FMVs for the summons (eden anyone?) Although, you can fast forward (i think after you beat the game once)
however, their junction system was pretty cool because a character can be a physical fighter or a magic/summon user. You didn't have predetermined "Jobs" for each character.
Once, I finished FF8 (rinoa's bouncing boobies has nothing on Tifa) never went back using a walkthrough.
Chrono Cross 44 characters!!!!!!! dude WTF? (I love chrono trigger, prolly b/c of Akira Toriyama of DBZ fame :D ) It had a bad ass soundtrack though

I hate the latest (and looks like ongoing) square FF games(X and X-2), mostly because the characters don't interest me. Its not fun leveling up a character to kick ass only to cringe at some dialogue he spouts that you can't do anything about...
Also...the zelda series, I think I was introduced to Crystalis back in the nes days and from that time forward I haven't wanted to play zelda. Nothing about gameplay. Maybe it was Captain N and the N team cartoon also (was he in there? I can't remember now), or that comic in the older nintendo power magazines. I think the idea of always rescuing this princess doesn't seem too legendary to me (isn't that the main premise?), although I bet the gameplay is pretty good from what I heard.

First on my disliked-games list: MK 3 and 4. The latter, if I recall, is 'MK trying to mimic Tekken's 3D nature'...
I do not dislike Counterstrike per se - it's those players who on the one hand have no problem with using cheats/hacks yet on the other ***** when someone plays the game intelligently, and the admins who are either unable or unwilling to distinguish talent from cheating, with whom I have issues.
I agree; said manufacturers aren't thinking right in the head. They show crash test footage, license their creations for various movies (Bond movies, for instance)... but have problems with their virtual counterparts getting banged up? Hypocrites, the lot of them.
As long as we're on the subject, some flak is due game companies who mar otherwise well-put-together games (GoldenEye - either - I'm looking at you!) with ersatz designations for real-world weapons. KF7 Soviet? Deustche D5K? Sheesh...
Oh, and for the chap who claims he can't stand guns in games because 'real warriors don't use them': I'll simply disagree with said reasoning, point out that they, like all other martial tools, have their place in the order of battle, and leave it at that. Well, and point out that you probably wouldn't complain if the sniper on your team gives an enemy spellcaster a terminal headache before he/she can finish casting something unpleasant.

Well, I don't like the current GTA games, nor do I like Halo. As for old school, I don't like Xenogears (mainly because I had so many people telling me how much better it was than Xenosaga, so after I played Xenosaga I played Xenogears and it had all the same problems that everyone was ragging on Xenosaga having), and I don't really like Chrono Trigger (story was just too confusing).

The fist Metal Gear Solid. I found it completely crap... ...which basicaly says that this is simply not my type of game! :-)
What i hate is splinter cell.(THE GAME SUUUX)
FFX(i spent 78 hours of my life on that crappy game 48 hours just to get the ultimate weapon for wakka. and also the hero is extremely GAY he always CRIES he only gets cool when they fight the last boss. but Auron kicks ass).
FFX-2 (no comment ust hate it)
the only reason i played the sims game was my goal to kill the entre neighbourhood (yes its possible) and after thats done your going to be extremely satisfied.

hmmm, a lot of (first person)shooters are/seem verry poplar, I've never liked that sort of game, so those might be popular games I don't like.
Halo is an overrated game that doesn't really break any ground. Well thats when you compare it to PC anyway, not sure about the Xbox's offerings of FPS.

Well, back then I nearly hated all fighting games (including Street Fighter). I still remember my dad who bought me this game for NES, by the next day I told him to return it back to the shop, and the guy at the shop told him this was amoung the most popular games around and this was the last sold piece. I was shocked by that. :p
Anyway, until today I don't really like SF as a video game. :D

People will hate me for this, but Final Fantasy, and pretty much every Japanese RPG. I've never like them, or anything about them.
The Japs can make some games perfectly, such as platformers and fighting games, but their RPGs just don't do it for me.
I love some RPGs, such as everything from these guys (http://www.spidweb.com/), but Japanese RPGs aren't my thing.

Final Fantasy series from 7 till 10, excluding 9. And from the looks of it, I won't like 12 as much either.
I perfer asian RPGs over American ones in general. Not much into the point and click system indicative of D2, Baulder's Gate, and the ilk.
MMORPG wise... I dislike world of warcraft, guildwars, l2, and RO. All these I've tried, and none of them I really liked. Now that senior year is coming up, I doubt I have time for any of that genre anyways.

heres a list, to make people hate me... MOST RTS games, Blizzard games specially WOW and WC3 with the exeption of Wc2 in this category hehe... FFX-2... Gran Theft - Auto games, I don't like to steal, kill, ect... I don't like crappy games like Ford Mustang, Corvette... I hate to say this but Resident Evil series, StarFox GC version, I like SNES and N64. I hate hate hate Harvest moon, after playing hours on a trip to canada. 6 hours trip to canada and 6 hours back = 12 hours of Video game farming. I hate FF11 for the ill-effect on my friends. Most MMORPGS are on this list because you get addicted, drop your grades, and everything else goes downhill. I hate the new megaman games, X3 was the best, X4 was over done but bareable... Anything after sucked with the exeption of Rockman and Forte but that was released years after from japans Super Famicom version. I hate Kirby Air Ride... and all Mario party games after number2, they just get redundant and unoriginal. I "dislike" halo, I dont hate it, because with 4 people it can be amusing, but with the controller, I cant enjoy as much as I did goldeneye... I hate poser racer games like Juiced, NFSUG1+2 was fun but wasted my time, I hate the fact that you cant drive in the daytime because you cant see shit sometimes, unlike true car games like Gran Turismo series. Phantasy Star Online just because I hate it for no reason. I really dont like Doom or Quake, I dont like violence, and may I include War games like Call of Duty and Socom....
Do all of them fit the category of being popular games of dislike, No, but I felt like expressing myself anyways mwuahah.
Well what do I like?, All FF's ones under but including X or 10. Suikoden I and II. Valkyrie Profile. Should I say, Square, Enix, 1st Party NES and SNES Games.... But this isnt about what I like anyways... So I cut it here.
Seems like this thread slowly turned into 'your favorite game sucks' thread... :(

I mean, come on, without it, camera angles seem so narrow...don't see as much!...*shrugs* And, it actually didn't impress me that much visually...controls are odd...I'd much rather play Quake 1!

My personal is Red Alert, the sequel to Command & Conquer. Everyone wrote about fantastic AI and gameplay, what I found was a repetitive AI which can easily fooled in attacking where you wanted to and a slow "build tons of your most powerful tank and overwhelm the enemy" gameplay. Not to mention that the Russian got all the funny toys while the Allied only the Chronosphere and the single player maps never really let made you let use their Cruisers or Light Tanks for either long-range coastal bombardment or hit-and-run tactics.
Then FFVII. After the sixth, fourth and third chapters Square went CGI-heavy and something to appeal the mass public, but inferior to some of the previous chapters gameplay-wise...the only real differences between the charaters are their model and Limit Break.

Which VIDEO GAMES do i dislike the most, DESPITE their popularity??
Hmmm, there is some of them. I will start with GTA3. I HATE THIS GAME. I swear. Is so frustrating, full of bugs and glitches. The citys looks like garbage. The AI is atrocious. The missions r so crap. The story is so boring. The graphics r horrible. I just hate this game so badly. Another one have to be Final Fantasy. I just cant stand the battle system. All u do is press X. I hate it. Hmmmm another one have to be the MGS series. I dont HATE this game, is just that gameplay wise i think is highly overated. The gameplay is really boring in my opinion. And the enviroments r really bad and repetitive. Especially on MGS2. But i love the cutcenes and story.

Resident Evil 4, bash me all you want, but that game really didn't live up to the name. It would've made for a nice spinoff or new series, but it just didn't do much to further the series itself.
Suikoden 3, terrible, terrible, the overwhelming positive response to this game just upset me. You just can't continue a storyline over into a second game then just throw it away in the third installment. Rather than the diplomatic struggles that drove the original two chapters, 3 degraded into a Final Fantasy-ish plot where someone tries to destroy the world.
Halo, I don't know if I even need to explain this one.

FF7. When I first played this game, I thought it had a nice magic system, but for me, an RPG is about gameplay and story, and FF7's story didn't cut it. It was, by far, the worst story Squaresoft (At the time) made, with so many plot holes and such. It was no surprise to me when Advent Children turned out to be the same - great fast paced battles, half assed story with many plot holes - since they were working off FF7.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City was so gay...it was a gayfest gay-o-rama with gay colors and gay people. It was an annoying game that completely ruined my identity.
All of the people who always made fun of me for being a gamer all of a sudden thought they were gaming professionals for beating Vice City. 99% of the people who beat it cheated. GTA 3 was great though.

Funny, all the Halo haters are rising from the depths...
Of course, i'm amongst them. If Miscrosoft hadn't bought Bungie out during production, I would have had a bit more love... but nah. It's just a blah FPS, and frankly, FPS's on consoles blow chunks.
Another franchise I really hate is GTA. I love all the lawsuits against it and all for the controversy. That's cool. But the game itself, I just don't like it. It's very... dull. What's the appeal of walking around and opening the door of a car and driving around? Ooo. .. Not my cup of tea, I guess.

Well, I do enjoy Halo 2 . . . for a while. It is fun and the weapons are swell but I think it's fanbase is alsting way too long. It's been out for over a year and my big bro is still playing it like he's only had it for a day. We got it the first week it came out. I just find it a bit too-overated. Even if Halo 3 sucks (Bungie is too caught up with the movie to work on the game as much as they did on Halo 2), that won't change anything because people will just stick with Halo 2 and refuse to try something else.

Lets see...anything made by Square for the PS2 minus Kingdom Hearts, Halo..Halo II, All the new Suikoden games(anything past part II was crap). There are others. Maybe Madden, since the game plays and controls like crap. Most EA games are also pretty craptastic, minus Need for Speed: Most Wanted, cause it lacks that faux Gangsta pimp my ride crap like U 1 and 2 lived.
Aside from that..hyped garbage, like Star Ocean III, which Square ruined.

Burnout Revenge I hate it, u cant do anything but run into things or bneat time goals, thats why Im a Midnight Club 3 Fan and Need for speed as far as Auto because u can actually supe up your car to your liking or personality/attitude.
As far as RPG, anything that requires running into enemies every 5 seconds like Inu Yasha Secret of the cursed mask. I didn't even finish that game cuz I cant go to the next screen (roads) without running into some random uglky demon thing every 5 seconds.

I don't know if it is considered popular or not, though...

Hate: GTA Series & Halo Series
Whilst GTA on ps2 when it first come out was great fun, the rest just killed it. As for Halo, it just sucked pointblank but multiplayer had its time.

for the ps2:
Final Fanatsy.i got so sick of the last one on the ps2,i haven't touched the game for over 3 years.
i got it for a christmas gift and got sucked into it,till my ps2 started with those DRE errors and after fixing it,i went onto playing shooters/racing games again.
tried to re-pickup playing it,but i got some pissed with it i gave up.
X-box:
KOTOR.i got it pre-owned and i feel like i got robbed.
PC:
Fear,i just can't see the big deal with it at all.

Any new games that take up a ****load of graphics just for the sake of looking pretty on a computer over playability. Yes, I'm looking at you F.E.A.R. You're a good game but I can go through a hallway and not go down to 2 frames a sec and I can't even shoot straight sometimes.
(I got a nVidia 5500 and 2.9GHz Celeron)
Those slow as hell dungeon crawlers from the 80's where everything is a monotonous corridor with the occasional monster ripped from LOTR and another door going to GASP... another monotonous corridor.
Final Fantasy 11 was a waste of time as it's just a annoying tedious MMORPG.

Halo series on xbox and pc sucked because it felt so slow to me in gameplay and weaponds are useless.
Counterstrike because one shot to the head sux."headshot"
I loved Half life 2 because it was fast paced and you could pick up objects and throw them.

Final Fantasy VII. The plot is laughable after a certain point, and actually kinda leaves me wondering if the plot even existed.
Counter-strike. This fps is in no way, shape or form, fun. Most people who play it are completely obsessed and have pretty much no life or interests outside of counter-strike, making for an enviorment that isn't really new player friendly. Also it's basically "whoever shot first wins" kinda gameplay, no strategy involved, no teamwork, no thinking, boooooring.
Newer sonic the hedgehog games (sonic adventures and onward,) way to bastardize my childhood, Sega...
Did I mention Crapper strike?
The elder scrolls. I picked up the elder scrolls 3 for the xbox some 2 or 3 years ago, and to be honest, I could not for the life of me see what was so appealing about this game. The graphics were absolutely gross looking for an xbox game, the gameplay lacked anything appealing, and it crashed more than Windows ME, so honestly, what is all this hype surrounding Oblivion?
Most new mario games. I've never been one for platformers, but I did enjoy the old nes and snes mario games. Mario party as well is just, wow, crap.
The halo series. These two games were fun while they lasted but, nothing special about them.

razel, I wonder why cant you like CStrike? You dont have to play online with bunch of "pro" players, who sure ll kill you at the first sight in game :D. Just find some buddy, setup a LAN/private game, and you ll experience the best FPS game ever!
i also cant think of why Halo1&2 become so popular. yes, it s fun when i was playing them, but after the game finished, I even cant remember what was in that game :D
Tomb Raider. Ok, Lara is hot. But except for this, the game is worthless,at least for me, since i don´t like this "huge scenarios with small things to find" game style.

Any Halo. I hate that game. Boring enemies, boring weapons, boring gameplay, boring characters, boring music, boring graphics, boring plot. I am awaiting flames from vehement fanboys. Oh and... Gordon can kick Master Chief's ass any day (fanboys explode with anger and fury as they cram as many swear words as they can come up with in their reply flame to this post).
World of Warcraft. Terrible. 6 hours a day of playing and whaddaya get? Constant server downtimes, nazi admins (or whatever the hell they're called, I haven't touched the game in 5 months so the exact termin doesn't spring back to me), shitty guilds, the whores, the pretentious clan boys who believe they are so godlike because of their elite gear they purchased through paypal off some Chinese farm site, people abusing live-speak (just watch the serious business ytmnd, I met idiots like that nearly every day), the troll race, pretty much everything, I hated it. The only RPG possibly more annoying, frustrating, and overall worse than World of Warcraft has got to be Real Life.

Have you read a single post in this thread? Every other post (probably more - not time to verify) has someone hating on Halo. This is the gathering of the foaming hatred towards Halo, GTA, and the occasional useless defense of a game.

Halo, CS, and WarCraft (That includes WoW)
I loved StarCraft but I can't seem to get into WarCraft =/
I sort of liked Halo and CS when I first played it, then it just got really really really boring... I don't get why are they fun >_> The only thing you do is Shoot, Die, Respawn. Rinse and repeat. That and seeing people screaming "STFU N00b", "OMFGWTFLOLBBQ N00b", and anything with the word n00b in it =/

What with all those idiots who create 10 new accounts to trash the cr*p out of the clueless newbies (like me), the idiots who curse at you with vulgarities when you miss your first shot, and the morons who only curse but don't bother teaching you the techniques you need to get better ~_~.
I honestly can't remember the number of time's I've met such people and told them to get a life. Most of them are retards. I still play it to pass the time when I'm seeding on BT. Other than that, naw, it's Mario Kart DS for me!

Shadow the Hedgehig. God I don't know why people buy this game. The missions are to tidiuos and Shadow controls as if he is moving on ice. The camera is a pain and will cause you to die more than anything else. The guns were also a crappy addition. I used to be a big Sonic fan, but all the 3D Sonic games were bad.

Grand Theft Auto 3 and San Andreas. I don't like them not because they're controversial but because I like games where the main story is more important that the activities that you can perform that have nothing to do with the main game.
I don't like Halo either, what is so great about this shooter?
The Mortal Kombat games, they all look the same to me.
