I'm 5'1, 87lbs (40kg). I'm tiny. I want to gain some weight, but I'm unsure how. I've tried gorging myself, and I'll only gain a little bit and then lose it as soon as I can't keep up eating that much.
I've tried working out, and had some success. I've gained 3lbs (1kg) in 4 months and managed to keep the weight on.
I'm trying to get some advice as to how to gain some weight and keep it. My goal is 95lbs (43kg). I don't want to gorge myself because I just can't eat all that much.
I have the following questions:
Are there any foods that I can eat to get the most out of my work out in order to gain weight?
Is there any particular order to work out in order to work the muscle groups I want and have the maximum effect on it?
What kind of exercises will work my legs? and my arms? and my bum?
What machines at the gym will be best to work on the above body parts?
How can I work out and gain some muscle tone and not look like a man?
Is there any way to gain fat and retain it?
Only problem with gaining fat is my boobs always get bigger and nothing else. It kind of is a problem.

I really have no idea...sorry. But have you tried talking to your doctor? Or a nutritionist? They could probably tell you a safe and effective way to do this...

Really, the easiest way to gain weight is to eat a load of junkfood and then sit around and be lazy for a few years. It works for most people.
If you want to gain effective weight try eating a ton of protein and working out. It's not hard people.
As for exercises to gain weight, try low reps with high resistance, say 5x8 of like... 75%-80% of your one rep max. Squats are good, bench press, dead lift... stuff like that. Keep it in the 8-12 rep range for maximum weight gain.
Of course, I don't do weights so I'm just parroting.

diet wise i can't give u much insight since i concentrated on maintaining or losing weight (which did happen to me by cutting sugary stuff out of my diet eating only twice a day and not snacking)
but if u want to gain mass (as in muscle) do weights like Troll was saying but reduce the time u do cardio and aerobics... esp jogging and running for long distances... these exersice cut mass very quickly and if u r trying to buff up then u need to stay off those and hit the weights... taking some protein supplements might be an option worth considering... (my supervisor in uni has bigger biceps than me O_O, and she is a power lifter)
as for the area u are gaining mass in... well remember the aerobics and jogging??

eat alot of milkduds. i lived off of the stuff for about 3 months. well that and dew. but honestly they sell a mix at some nutrition stores that help with this. my friend amy tried it and gained about 11 punds in 4 months. it is more healthy then the junk food idea.

DO NOT EAT JUNKFOOD!
You want to be healthy, and a bit heavier, no?
That means less fat, more muscle... But, I think most girls want bigger boobs (Yes, I've talked to some of my girl friends about this before)
I don't suggest high weights with low repititions. I think you should go endurance instead. Pick a good weight to work out with. Dumbbells, maybe use 5 pounds, and lift them 20 times with each arm. Then do pushdowns (I'm sure you can ask some people at the local gym). Run, alot. It will burn fat around your stomach and legs. That's where most of the fat is anyway (on a man... I'm not sure if you lose fat, you might lose your boobs....). Okay, eat healthy, like carbs and protein, then work it out. Carbs = energy. Protein = building muscle. Many people don't know this, but muscle weighs alot more than fat does. So being lazy and eating Mickey D's all day will actually make you lose muscle, and gain fat. That's extremely unhealthy. And that's why you actually lost weight before.
You want a well-toned body, with less fat. So basically, lift low weights lots of times, then run. The heart is a muscle you really want to train...
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

It sounds like you have done everything, If you're young, under 13, don't worry about it, your body is using all the resources. If your over 18, see a doctor before you do damage to your body. If you're in between, drink regular, not lowfat milk instead of water, and eat lots of carbs with your protein. While fried foods will also help, its not to healthy to eat to much of this. Also gaining weight and looking bigger is different. By adding muscle mass and using fat you may gain weight, but actually get thinner because muscle weighes more that fat.

They may give you ideas on what you can do, but ultimately I agree with Dreamer. The best thing you can do before doing anything is talk to your doctor so you know what's what and what may help you reach your goal.
After that I'd talk to a nutritionist.
Good luck with your endeavor. :)

Call me pengu. Here's the lowdown on what I've done so far.
The problem is, I like my boobs as big as they are, so I don't want them to get any bigger. When I gain fat though, it all goes to is my boobs and no where else. I want some in my bum, and my legs, and my upper arms, but nothing. So getting bigger in that way has been ruled out as futile by me. I don't like big tatas.
I'm 20 years old, I've been to see a dietician. He recommended I eat 2500 calories in small meals 5 times a day. A balanced diet, yes, I try that too. I however, don't want to go the route of protein and creatine drinks as it made me really sick.
I'll go try some of the things that have been suggested so far and see how it leads me. I like to run, I run 5k 3 times a week at least. I do weights as well. I do weight-assisted pull ups and chin ups right now as well as rowing. I'm not fond of free weights because I always am afraid of doing it wrong, so unless I get a personal trainer, I'm not going to use them I prefer the machines.

some girls would kill to be in your situation!
since you've already talked to a professional, i'll give you my opinion.
my belief is that in your case, your body is maintaining a homeostatic weight, so that is why it's hard for you to keep the weight on. as long as you are eating healthy and exercising, you shouldn't worry about your weight in lb or kg unless your doctor says it poses a health risk. (or unless you are a professional boxer whose career depends on your weight)
as you age, your body's metabolism should slow down and you should gain weight. or if you plan on having kids, your body should gain weight after having children.

u run a lot.... that explains why ur body maintains the weight so well....
fat is actually harder to burn than muscle... (yes u body will digest it if it feels like it) which is why when obese ppl go on a weight lost program with exercise included they lose a large amt in the beginning stages then it staves off and slows down.... this is because the body have demolished the muscles(wat ever is excess) and since muscles weight more u get more weight lost....
if u want to get more mass like i said earlier do less of ur cardio (which should mean instead of 3 X 5Km runs in one week, u cut it down to 1 or 2, or u can cut the distance ran but run the same number of times)
i think my sis would envy u.... but she hardly moves her lard arse around (wakakaka)

uh..... ^^;
it's kinda funny... i have the same problem.. ^^;
i am 5'6" (maybe alittle more...) and for the past 7-9 years, i've been 110-115lbs. (115 right after a meal ^^; )
i exercise alot (extracuricular sports and stuff ) yet i've never went past 120lbs. i'll gain alittle then drop right back down to 110..
i'm 19 now but it started when i was around 11-13yrs old...
i'm fairly healthy, but otherwise the weight is a little abnormal for my age and size... i should be around.... 140-150 ideally... i think ^^;
any suggestions?
alucard81
06-21-2005, 11:22 PM
figure wat is it that stops u from buring off fat....
should be too much carb in ur diet (which is common)
eat healthy carbs... veges, wholewheat bread
stave off completely processed sugars n starch, (if u have sweet tooth then u know thats ur problem already)
with ur active lifestyle u should be able to do it quite easily without going hungry....
it does take quite a bit to take out the sugar in ur diet since it gives ur brain a boost which it may have grown accustomed to.... so when u feel the need for the boost eat veges or drink some sugar free fruit juice
this is the best i can think of since i dunno whether u r carb or protein retaining...

Hmm, this sounds like me when I was 15 to 20. I was 6ft and 100 lbs, just a walking stick. I wish i was like that again. Because of what you wrote I'm not worried about about your weight and height because your body is just burning calories as fast as you take them in. Just make sure you take in enough calories, power bars make a good snack. Don't worry when you stop running, you body will start storing fat again. Most women would love to change places with you. Some men too.
Use 1-5 lbs. weights with regular exercises, the weights add something a little extra to work out with. Pushups, situps, and punches and lifts with low weight weights can help. Make sure the weights have enough resistance for you to gain a little muscle. You can build up to heavier weights, but never use too heavy ones for punches.
Alternatively, if you have the $, try out a bunch of exercise machines and find one you can bother using regularly without being bored to death that works out a lot at once.
Peanut butter sandwiches, Skippy, are great sources of protein, fat, and calories. Use a nice calorie filled slice of bread with it, a little butter, you're doing fine.

Oh! But I love running! It keeps my legs killer svelt, and has been building them up somewhat.
I eat a high cheese diet. I'm not fond of bread. I like rice and noodles. I like red meat and high fat meats like lamb... I don't like turkey. :(
Go to america, eat ONLY at McDonalds for a moth or untill you think you've gained enough, wich will probably be in the first week already.
You should be able to gain about 15kilo atLEAST there ;)
And perhaps some severe damage to the kidneys
Heh, I'm 16, at the heigth of 73 m and I weigh about 62 kg.
Around avarage / under avarage.
But your weighth kinda scares me, afcourse I can't read your highth in meters so I'm not to entirely sure.

i used to be healthy and slim once but now i'm overweight and sickly weak - and you too can be like me in just a few weeks! lol
i used to walk a lot before i got a car - now i dont walk anywhere, not even to the corner shop 100yards down the street. cut out unsightly exercise wherever you can.
also i used to eat only when i was hungry, now i eat even if im not hungry and even when its uncomfortable to eat anymore. if your not having trouble breathing, it means you still have room for more.
another tip is to cut down on how much water you drink, i was drinking down many litres a day but now i hardly touch the stuff - less water means less digestion and more fat storage. better still substitute fizzy drinks for water and buy them in 2litre bottles not tiny cans.
theres other stuff but if you following this basic lifestyle, you'll be a gaining weight in no time... - or your moneyback!

I got the same problem like you. I am kinda skinny/slim and I just won't gain weight. I think it may be in my genes. I can eat whatever I want without gaining weight. Don't really have an advice, try fitness, sports, eating abit more(not too crazy)and lots of sleep. But most important be happy with yourself and don't endanger your health!!!. I'm 5'4" and I used to be 125 for a LONG time but I found that half a year of mcdonalds and other fast food for lunch helped me gain 10 pounds.
McDonalds gains you weight but you gotta be careful the stuff doesn't hurt you, it's not exactly healthy food and can be pretty addictive.
.. Not that that stops me from going now and then.
Alternatively, a Pizza Hut pan pizza can put the pounds on fast too. Any pizza really. But take out is the worst/best for that. :)

Ironically, One of the better foods to gain weight safely with are Slim-fast-style shakes.
I kid you not. Hospitals use identical formulas for people who are dangerously underweight. Slim-fast markets them as meal REPLACEMENTS, so they are usually as nutricious as a regular meal should be(via additives of course), and their calorie content is equal to a low-calorie meal, but since it's just liquid, it doesn't fill you up for as long as a 'real' meal would.
And unlike a junk-food diet, it won't make you feel sick or deprive you of vitamins. Just remember to eat normally in addition to one shake a day... work your way up to 2 per after a month or 2 to adjust.
And for goodness's sake don't rush yourself-gaining weight too fast can be just as dangerous as losing it too fast.

Also you must understand the difference between aerobic and anaerobic excercise. Aerobic excercise's primary goal is to get the heart rate up (and keep it there), which makes it ideal for losing weight. Anaerobic primarily builds muscle (and therefore weight). Note that these are not exclusive classifications: Aerobic excercises often build muscle as well, and most anareobic excercises burn at least a moderate amount of calories.
Swimming and running are aerobic. Weights, crunches and pull-ups are anaerobic.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but if you can't eat a lot in one meal, have several smaller meals a day instead.
I was really light (for a guy) at 112 lbs or so and these were the suggestions my friends gave me. Following them, I gained 6 pounds in a month so far. I'm aiming for 130-140 lbs (I'm a Chinese, and we don't exactly regard huge buff muscle men as the ideal type).
First, you should get a physical to make sure it's not something else that's wrong with your body which is causing you to be skinny. This occurs far more often than most people think. Once the physical clears you for exercise, do something along these lines:
- Eat several smaller meals a day. I'm talking 5-6 here. And eat something an hour before you work out (to give your body something to run on instead of your body), and within an hour following the workout to (to replenish your energy and also give your body somethign to build your muscles with).
- Cut down on aerobic exercises for the first month. Use it as a 5-10 minute warmup. Long duration aerobic exercise really causes you to lose weight. You'll need to do it eventually, but right now, you're trying to put on weight, so it's fine to cut down on it. You can bring it back up later.
- Try to design a short workout routine to follow for your first month. Like 1 hour at most. Routines longer than that tend to have a much higher dropout rate. Be sure to change the routine every month or so though. Both for variety, and for the fact muscles get used to movements after a month and a 1/2. Easiest way to get a routine designed is to hire a trainer. Yes they're expensive, but hiring one once per month isn't that bad. And having them to show you the proper form for the exercises is very important.
edit:
note that a meal doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to provide the things your body needs. Something as simple as fruit with cottage cheese, or bread with cold cuts can do. Nuts and things like peanut butter is apparently great (although I'm not a big fan of them). It can even be as simple as a protein shake in milk!
You'll have to do some research on nutrition though. It's too complex to explain easily. :)

Hmm, why exactly do you want to gain weigth? It sounds like you're perfectly healthy ^_^. And I don't really have an idea on how to make fat go to certain places in your body. I think it's genetic :p. I know some people exercise the muscles near to the fat to remove it. So maybe if you execise less with the places you want to gain fat it, and more with the ones you want to lose fat... Meh, dunno, I'm underweight, but I don't care :D (it doesn't really show except for slim legs and I still have a good endurance, it's been tested :p). I'd say, try whatever you want, but make sure you don't ravage your body ^_^.

You can't lose all fat without dying. And the tummy has a natural small fat layer (well the entire skin has, but it's thicker at the tummy :p). So yes, it's because of the muscles. And because of the bones. They make up a good part of your body weight, especially if you're skinny :D.

if you're looking for abs and stuff, just playing basketball won't do it :)
You'll have to go into a "serious" workout such as doing situps with legpulls.

Easiest way would be probably to completely *stop* doing any sorts of sports (like the running and the weight lifting you do), since that burns a lot of calories, and thus you'll never really gain weight because all the calories you gain by eating are quickly burned by doing sports again.
Also, *no diet*, i.e. eat whatever you want, preferrably lots of sweets (ice cream, chocolate etc.) and avoid "Light" products.
Kalis
06-24-2005, 06:47 PM
But mai, that would be putting on bad fat!
Working out and eating puts on muscle!
And I actually find that playing sports increases my appetite. Whenever I sit around (e.g. on my computer all day), I eat far less.
actually zer0kage, if you want to be a bit more specific.
ideally it would probably be do it in the morning when you wake up (takes like 5 minutes probably, at least in the beginning), and then again during the evening.
No real point doing it during a workout since exercises like deadlifts and squats use multiple parts in the body (which includes the abs area).

That's a good thing eh?
Well, just eat normal balanced diet. You can eat more, but don't eat too much fat; protein & carbohydrate + fibre would do. Don't force yourself.
If you're really serious to become fatter, eat more junk food, more fat, repeat eat-sleep-TV/computer-no exercise cycle, and you'll get fatter (especially your abdomen) in no time!

Everyone has their own BMR (basic metabolic rate). You can never change it. Genes somewhat plays a consistent factor in body physical appearance. The BMR thingy works like daily. Say your body burns 200 Calories (not calories) in one day including sleep. You eat 2000 Calories a day and burn off over half of what you ate through spontaneous movement. This is what your body balances out through out the day.
Gaining weight and losing weight are simple methods. For gaining weight, you have to trick your body and make it burn more Calories than usual. First, eat heavy and less meals so that your body burns what is needed. Eat 3000 Calories a day with 3 meals, your bodies BMR, say 200 with sleep and 300 without a day of sleep. Your body will burn more and more and your metobolic rate will keep firing and then it will go in a state where your body gets tired of burning. This is the sendentary state, where you gain pounds fast.
To lose weight you have to eat 2000 Calories, which is daily amount. Divide your meals into 5-8 meals a day having about 200- 300 Calories in each meal. Your body burns 200 with a good 7 and a half hour of sleep. And you move a lot, like exercise to burn the useless Calories or it is stored as fat. Your Metabolism needs to rest so it could fire up some more. It is like changing the fish tank of water or else it gets muddy.
Lot of factors that can change the way a person lose weight or gain weight. You need to monitor consistantly the water you drink, the sleep hours you get, the exercise, and all that stuff and stuff that makes life kick ass.
Anyway, I just got bored and made a whole post on this. Oh yea, I've gained 20 pounds and lost 20 pounds by fooling around. I learned quite a lot. The hard thing is being commited cause your body does not like to change the way it has been and it will fix your bad habits right away.

- eat protein-rich foods like meats, fish or dairy products and take some protein supplements
- do intense workout: bodybuilding and fitness
but stick with low fat foods ^^

Your body shopuld know it's true weight so you shouldn't worry about it. You should be fine the way you are. You're lucky your blessed by being able to stay light and thin. Many people would kill to be in your position.

I wouldn't say she's blessed to be "light and thin".
And she'll probably need to gain some weight if she wants to have a baby one day. Being too light and pregnant is both dangerous for the baby and the mother.

I have a friend who has the same problem she is very skinny for her size but all her weight goes to her behind instead. If you are petite in size too you might be ideal weight for your size. My friend is about 2 inches taller than you and about 10 pounds heavier and she was told it was normal for her size to be that weight.

I'm 183cm tall (6 feet) and went from 62kg (136lbs) to ..hold a sec.. 71kg (156lbs) in just under half a year in the gym. I look awesome. But this method might not work as well for women, due to the sheer difference in musclemass. But if you ask my oppinion, adding weight in muscle or in fat, I'd say muscle is the way to go. It's also healthier and you'll feel better.
Try those stair-machine thingies as they will add muscle to your legs and butt. those are the largest and most powerful muscles in your body, so they will add a lot of weight. Squats work well too. You could work on your chest with push-ups or machines made for that purpose. (I'm swede and don't know the english names for them) Chest and shoulder muscles will also keep your breasts from sagging when you get older, so that an added bonus.
Also eat a lot of carbohydrates, like pasta, when building muscles.
Edit: I'm also the type that just can't gain weight by eating. It's odd, really. I look skinny, even though I weigh in just 2kg (4.4lbs) below my over-weight friend who is just 5cm (about one inch) shorter than me. O.o
It gave me hell in school. -.-

i think you are so lucky to be that weight, and height because i'm shorter than you and weigh like 20 lb more... to gain weight i guess exercising correctly would be the best way, or somehow slowing down your metabolism...

1. Are there any foods that I can eat to get the most out of my work out in order to gain weight?
2. Is there any particular order to work out in order to work the muscle groups I want and have the maximum effect on it?
3. What kind of exercises will work my legs? and my arms? and my bum?
4. What machines at the gym will be best to work on the above body parts?
5. How can I work out and gain some muscle tone and not look like a man?
6. Is there any way to gain fat and retain it?
7. Only problem with gaining fat is my boobs always get bigger and nothing else. It kind of is a problem.
(i numbered ur sentences for easy reference)
ok, let me try to answer ur qs :)
1. yes, high protein + carb foods will definitely increase your overall bulking potential. Try a high fat/protein breakfast (eggs, bacon, etc) everyday. Then after your workouts, drink lots of whole milk and eat some eggs. (don't use protein powders or other supplements). Eggs + milk are great source of proteins and fat. Best thing is...after ur done with bulking, u can also switch to nonfat milk and jsut egg whites to keep up with the muscle building with out the added fat ;)
2. There's no specific order u have to work out in, as long as u alternate muscle groups to give them time to rest. Example, do lower body one day and upper body the next. Abs, u can work on pretty much everyday. When u start workign out any group of muscles, be careful of the delayed onset muscle soreness i.e. the first day u start or resume after a long break ur muscles won't feel any pain during the workout but u'll feel it big time starting the next day. In serious cases (happend to me) u can be sore for a whole week if u overwork ur muscles on the first day back. So take it easy the first and stop before you feel like u need to stop.
3. legs/bum: simplest would be jogging + lifts, squats for bum, biking and stairs are good too
arms: bench press, fly, rows (since ur a girl, go for more reps of less weight so you dont' form big-o scary arms)
4. there's a lot of different variations of machines out there, i would suggest just try them out and see which work the muscle groups u want to target. (in fact, u can probably do a good workout just with a mat at home)
5. more reps, lower weights. example: benching 12 reps of 70lbs instead of 6 reps of 100lbs
6. unfortunately, u either have to chose between muscle mass or unhealthy flab for that, and muscle mass tends to take a while to build (weeks) and can go away if u do'nt keep up your work out routine. Also after u've reached the weight u want, dont' forget to keep up a high protein diet to maintain ur muscle mass.
7. not a problem unless they're way out of proportion w/ ur body. send me a pic and i'll tell u ;)
haha...anyways, ur breasts are getting bigger because the extra mass is not needed anywhere else, meaning you haven't worked ur muscles enough so that they would take in the extra protein and stuff.
hope that was useful, if u have any other q's lemme know. :)

I have a question myself :)
What exercises are good for bulking up the torso?
In my case, while my arms and legs are small, they're not tiny. What's really the problem is my torso is very small haha.
I know exercises to build up the arms and legs, but none for the torso (not abs), so any help would be appreciated :)

Push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups will buff you up in that area. Dumbbells are useful tools for building shoulders, biceps and triceps and more. That's the cheap and effective method. As I said before, eat a lot of carbonhydrates and protein. Pasta is great. Eat till you drop. You can't build a brick house without bricks.
Edit: Make it a daily routine and you'll note a difference in a month. I started just over half a year ago, and now I now I don't need to wear a t-shirt at the beach and still feel confident.
Kalis

don't push-ups and pull-ups work on arms and chest?
and sit-ups on abs?
My waist is tiny. Like, 27" tiny.
It's like roughly 11-12 inches across.
So obviously, I want to buff up across (expand the girth if possible :: laughs ::)
I can't eat huge meals, so instead I eat 4-6 smaller meals everyday.
And play tennis.
And do workouts (although I haven't for the past week. Need to sign up for a gym now that I'm back in Toronto).
Right now, everyday, I do 3 sets of 15 pushups, situps, and leg pulls, 2 times a day, since I don't have access to a gym.
Slowly trying to increase the number per set as well (I try to add one every 3 days).

no that alone wont do...if your really bent on doing it...see a professionall...it may cost you but in the long run it will be more benifical....hmm but so far i think most people like the slim fit type girl...^^
Goodluck gaining weight :p
Training is my only GOOD advice ^_~
if you gain or lose too much weight in such a short period of time some people could develop diabeties...it happend to my lil bro...however people are more at risk when their family has a history of diabeties...but you should really ask a femail pro on gaining weight the right way...
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!because then she would gain weight but she would in turn be come a fatty...and be like 60% of america.....geez how rare is it to find someone who is trying to gain weight...and people give them bad advice..>~<...i know that one way i gained weight...i went thru basic and i went from 135...to 175 in 9 weeks...but thats because males build and maintain muscle better and faster than females...and as for the post on having kids....thats just a nogo she stated that she doesnt want to get larger breasts...right!!!...having a kid will permanently make her breasts larger...my mother was a small c...after having 5 kids he is now like a double d and weighs like 300 lbs

yeah alot of people in america are overweight....i was gonna be one of them but then i pulled my head from my 4th point of contact and joined the army and now i can run 2 miles in 13 mins and run 4 miles in 28....wow those days suck...lol...but if you really wanna try something difficult run 4 miles at that pace carrying a 15 lbs stick w/ a flag on a windy day....that really sucked

ya i do 100% agree since i joined the army i cant eat fast food...it tears apart my dige sys...its just horrible for you...supersize me was a very intersting docu...it proved that most people prefer conv. over health...and that mcd's SUCKS...but anyways....ill reitterate..most guys preffer the slim fit girls...over the girls that have more rolls than a bakery...well thats atleast in southcarolina, northcarolina, and socal...i say again see a pro...most of the advice people here are gonna give you is probably only half of what you need to do...not sure someone might have a degree in sports med...besides i have more respect for a woman who takes care of herself than one who has it naturally...thats a great thing...but if you eat that much and you dont gain weight naturally..maybe your just ment to be that weight...just dont go on any tall buildings on a windy day wearing baggy cloths..lol cause you'll turn into a kite =P

Any way...
I'm into the whole " not fat, but not a twig, dead, or dying" run right about now. So, if you want to get more muscle tone in your arms, legs, and abdomen get your self a good weight set( shame on you if you didnt already), and protien will help speed up this process alot(especially if you're a wussy, or if you just want to get the apperance of good muscle tone with out the rigerus wieght lifting).
As for the protien, all I can say is that you should do what
Ashley did, and keep your boyfriend really, really happy! :D

I really don't know well about such things, and i have no idea about your weight and measures, cuz i only know kg and m. But i had the problem too a few years ago. I had to gain weight because my underweight was dangerous. It wasn't really my fault because i where thin, but had a normal weight, then my body grow up very fast and my body wasn't able to handle it. After that i had to gain weight to a normal level again. I managed it with a few simple rulez: Don't eat products with "diet" printed on them.
Don't drop meals, eat, breakfast, lunch, dinner to regular times, eat whenever you are hungry.
Eat whatever you are like (eat what you are hungry for), i have the feeling when your body needs more vitamins. For example: If you are hungry for an apple, your body needs vitamins.
If possible eat snacks between mean meals.
Don't eat only junk food! But still eat it if you want ^^
Don't stop doing sports, you'll be hungr for sure after moving your body ^^
Try to buy these power bars. Some sport food (a power bar) has as much calories as a full meal.
I live that way and now my weight is ok. My BMI is 20. The only thing i don't like is my belly, because theres a lot of fat, but i guess thats because of the beer i drink. I need to do more situps or something like that ^^
Well bear is like a meal too ;-)

I'll be glad to help ya out :D
for bigger abs (thicker muscles around the ab) u need to apply the same concept as u would for building arms as opposed to toning
try concentrated, slow, weighted sit ups (as in if you're working out at home, grab some weights, even big canned foods will do, hold them against ur chest and do slow sit ups, try to keep a constant pace)
i read that you're doing 3 sets of 15s, that's fine if you're doing slow weighted sit ups. But if you're doing normal sit ups, 15 is not quite enough to warm up the muscles. Since u can do 3 x 15, maybe try 2 x 25?
On the other hand, if u got one of those fancy ab machines, jsut set the resistance higher and do it @ a slower speed. :)
o yea...keep in mind for situps, the way down is just important (if not more important) as the way up.
for concentrated weighted ones, try to slow down to at least one-one-thousand on the way up and one-one-thousand on the way down. A two-one-thousand pace is really hard to maintain unless u got great abs, which i don't. haha :(

I used to wrestle back in highschool and had to constantly add or lose weight depending where the coach wanted me at. I weigh 175 now in highschool I weighed 152 and bounced from there to 141. If you want to gain weight right I suggest a High intake of carbs. ex pasta and breads. Also you have to add protein. ex chicken breast mostly. Start off slowly adding more and more food intake to your diet. Now if you want to add muscle you'll have to go to a gym and use the bench press for the chest. You can do regular bench prees. incline and decline. And also flys. Then for abs do crunches then leg lifts or if they have a roman chair at your gym you can use that for abs. If you need any more info im glad to help.

Lol...seriously. Reading through this, some of this advice will wind up taking years off of your life (the salt one for example). If it's a real issue with you, see a pro regularly so they can monitor your progress (everyone's body is different, so seeing them regularly will let them adjust your regimen accordingly).

otherwise:
drink enough liquid
exercises (not excessive )
balanced nutrition

ROFL! :D this is the first time I've known a female who actually wants to gain weight. It's much easier for a female to gain weight, a female body is more conservative to fats... so if you get fat, its your fault. :p ...the healthy way to gain weight is to eat food with lots of fibers, and eat more fish. :D
As mentioned above, go see a nutrition.

06-29-2005, 11:26 PM
basic way
increase protein intake ( sources : fish , meat , chicken , milk )
increase vitamin intake so absorbtion of protein is improved ( vitamin c especialy )
not to forget vitamins - iron , calcium
exercise - walks / stretches
its important to know that amount varies among individuals due to conditions like weather , metabolisme .. etc
advanced way
consult a nutritionist , trainer .. they know the shit .
btw most info can be found online

Not sure if anyone has asked this yet, but have you looked into seeing as to maybe why you're not gaining weight? At 5'1, 87lbs is not quite, but very thin. If you take in a dairy products on a daily basis I'd suggest you look into see if whether or not your lactose intolerant like many asians. Could be various other reasons, but to me this sounds like more than just a case of high metabolism.

A tip: Try running longer stretches and running them slower. The longer you're at it the more you get out of it. The point is to make the muscles 'used' to working with less oxygen. If you just run to burn, you run till you taste blood in your mouth.

I spoke to someone yesterday. He's a prospective persona trainer who can only work with kids for now. He's attending school, but he told me that what it may come down to is working with a number of eating habits.
You need to know your body. You need to know what foods cause you to gain weight. After that you'll have to look at which foods have more of an effect on your chest size and moniter whether or not it has an effect on the places you want fat to go to. I assume whatever foods have an effect all around are the ones you may want to stick with and then discard the rest.
This is all what I gathered from him. The one thing he told me that I'm sure of is that this will be a trial and error deal.
Keep this in mind and I'll try and find someone who may know more and I'll get back to you. :)

Woohoo! I've hit 90lbs since the first post! That's a gain of 3 lbs. I haven't done anything different except I've found a protein shake that doesn't make me sick. I've started to eat 3 square meals, have 2 shakes, and 3 snacks everyday. The shakes are usually one for before my workout and one after my workout.
I like to mix my protein shake powder in yogourt, fruit and milk instead of just milk because it seems less to make the shake powder less sweet. Can anyone tell me if that's alright? I also like to mix a shot of espresso into it sometimes after a workout... haha.. ^^;;

Well he is a newbie and the day I saw him was the first day in 6 years I've seen him. I have another friend who apparantly is a personal trainer, but I haven't spoken to him in about 2 years though other friends of mine have kept in touch with him.
It's just tricky because I don't know what's going on between us and I'd really hate to just up and talk to him and the first thing out of my mouth is "so, I hear you're a personal trainer".

I like to mix my protein shake powder in yogourt, fruit and milk instead of just milk because it seems less to make the shake powder less sweet. Can anyone tell me if that's alright? I also like to mix a shot of espresso into it sometimes after a workout... haha.. ^^;;
I'm glad you found a protein shake you like although I'm kind of wary about you mixing it with espresso shots. I have no actual information regarding my cautionary stance on mixing shakes with espresso. I'm just wondering what the caffine may do since it's a drug on its own.
I'll try and get some information today. I'll visit a gym and ask some trainers and see what they say.

I to am in the same boat, 6'5" and 145 lbs, I choose to let my metabolism catch up with me because it will eventually. I dont know about anyone else but the whole freshman 15 was crap (for me) I lost 10 lbs when I got to college. I put on the most weight while I swam but my college doesnt have a team. as others have told you exercise would be the best option along with the eating regiment you have put yourself on.

You could try doing something to your metabolism. Like not eating too much for a while to slow it down then eating normally or just fattening foods. Dont know too much gaining weight if being lazy hasnt done it for you.

the best way to gain weight is to eat more and exercise less.

No, that's not the best. It might be the fastest, but not the best. The best is really just to exercise regularly and eat healthily, then you'll be your ideal weight in time, and you won't need to gain weight anymore.
Edit: Since I first posted here, I've gained almost 5 kgs (11lbs), though putting on more weights on the machines and buying a 4-days-a-week card at the gym. I imagine I'll gain even more. And when my body doesn't ache all over, I feel awesome! Hot stuff, coming through!
I might get addicted to this.
Edit2: Here's a weight versus height table that seem good. http://www.am-i-fat.com/Ideal_body_weight.html
I do suggest eating alot and weight training since you want muscles not fat.
some people get so lucky in the genetic lottery, I have to excercise to keep me from getting fat and you're talking about trying to gain!

This thread has exploded. Most everything was right about the diet but I think many people here underestimate bodyweight exercises. There's no point in joining and wasting money at a gym if you can't do 50 pushups in a row or 50 squats. These are good for strength if you can't do many and good for muscular endurance as you approach the magical #50. Mix it up with single hand pushups and single leg squats if you like. There are plenty of bodyweight exercises out there. It's just a good base for anything more advanced, whether it's free weights or machines. The OP sounds like maybe she can do it already as she rounds like an athletic type what with the running and everything, but I'm just making a general recommendation.

what? gaining weight? that's easy.... just go to U.S. an live for 5-6 months.... i guarantee you'll gain alot... believe me... i gain 10 pounds (5 kilos) in my first 5 months in the U.S.... seriously i dont meant to be sarcastic....
or maybe you have a "gifted body".... so what you eat will just come out easily(you know what i'm talking about)... if it's that way you just need to wait until your metabolism slows down(like when you're in middle ages)....

From what I understand, doing BWE in that fashion is good for developing muscular endurance, not necessarily bulk or explosiveness.
However, I'm fairly sure you're right in that BWE are a good starting point. There will be a limit to BWE though, and that's when the switch to weights needs to be made.

Nope, it's entirely possible with BW to do all that, but yeah, 50 should be the magical number to switch like I said (from what I've heard for men). But if you can't even do 50, chances are it'll help build muscle too. And you did allude to BW that can help with both bulk or explosiveness, so why not mention them?
Explosiveness = plyometrics, if you don't mind jumping around like an idiot during your exercises, these are perfect. Just google it. Clap pushups are good for the arms.
Bulk? That's harder. Chances are single arm pushups can help with this. Or the 3 chairs pushup.
Edit: I already had the disclaimer about muscular endurance in my old post!
