Some people loose weight before bikini season.
.....
I dont understand how some people can dare cosplay in slutty outfits without loosing a little weight....Lovehandles!! people can see your gut! think about it before you cosplay that slutty outfit.
Im sounding like an idiot, but feh...ive seen too much blubber in the 3 years worth of conventions that it really does get annoying.
This is not bashing bigger people cosplaying, just those who cosplay in slutty outfits.

I'm not in exactly great shape myself so I can't be too critical, but I'd say it's certainly a concern if you're playing someone with a radically different build than your own. Some dirty pair stuff I've seen comes to mind. If it's impossible to drop those pounds, maybe cosplay someone who's at least dressed in a way that's more concealing than revealing? I live in a place that's pretty outdoorsy so most people are relatively in shape, but some of the stuff I see on the net is just painful to watch... It's more a cosmetic than health issue though. Scientific American had a really good article a while back about how the whole overweight issue is totally overblown. Turns out a bunch of the doctors exaggerating things are actually on the payroll of Jenny Craig and so forth. Food for thought, heh heh :)

Im skinny, short, straight haired, dark skinned asian kid, but im not gonna cosplay some tall, fair skinned, long haired bishonen type. Thats just as bad as what im complaining about.
Ya...but i dont think scientific american has been to anime conventions....

Maybe they should go some time, could make for interesting sociological research :) It's true that it's up to the cosplayer if they want to be embarrassed or not (I confess, I did it and was embarressed as hell!) but if a person is too far off in appearance maybe it could detract from the enjoyment of others. It sounds bad, but a severe burn victim playing some bishounen could give people nightmares, for example.

I'm over weight, too. Vainty and health are two different things. Yes. Being under weight or over weight is unhealthly, it's a fact. Not just a marketing stragety. Have you seen "Super Size Me"? I haven't read the article you're talking about. But, eventually your body won't be strong enough to fight off immunity, if you don't take care of it over the years.
Yeah. I agree. I hope I don't sound shallow when I say this. You got to have a good body to wear scanty clad suits. Male or female. No matter how open minded you are, if I wear something that does not fit me, something that shows off my flaws or looks sloppy, mostly likely I'll be laughed at.

its hard for people in america, considering that like half of the entire population is overweight.
i think people are aware, but then again, fandom takes over and no one has any logical sense then, thus dooming us all to seeing our favorite characters in unimaginable settings >_< oh god oh god, my eyes! the googles they do nothing!

I like to see japanese cosplayers more that american. American cosplayers sometimes don't go with the costume. Like huge chubby inuyasha's??? Come on!!!

No, the worst possible scenario in all of COSPLAY-dom is not the 300lbs Belldandys, neither the costumes which tend to reveal more than half the sighted American public would want to see, nor is it those COSPLAYers that fail to understand the importance of mixing soap with water before or during the convention. None of these match the penultimate horror that many at conventions face: those males who believe that they are somehow doing anime fans and the world a favor by COSPLAYing as female characters. Yesh my friends, the worst are the balding 30-year-old men who feel the need to dress up as Rei Ayanami, Dejiko, or the everyday Japanese School Girl. The worst of these mentally scarring bunch also feel the need to attempt the actual character voices in formal nonchalant conversation.
