The year is 1990. The Super Nintendo has about one year left before it's released. The NES is STILL going strong with the Game Boy complimenting it nicely. In four years, the NES would be laid to rest as one of the greatest game systems of all time, without question.

Now, as we recall the "Bikes to Trains to Video Games" jingle that we recall so fondly, it's time to recall your FAVORITE NES GAMES OF ALL TIME!

Did you go to some resource to get that list, or did you sit there and type it up for 10 minutes? Probably easier ways to get a list of all NES games than this.

But anyway, you don't have "Crash n' the Boys Hockey" or "Digger T. Rock" listed there.

I sat there and typed it for 10 minutes. All of this is straight from my memory!

And there was a Crash Hockey game?! Was it released stateside or was it Japanese only?

Digger T. Rock... I know the name, but who made that again?

Haha, I wasn't even in the US back in 1990, and I barely knew what an NES was.

Weren't there more Metal Gear games? Or were those for the SNES?

AHHH! It's time for:

"What's Up With Metal Gear?" By: Cymbalin22

In the beginning, Metal Gear was made by Hideo Kojima for Konami, but NOT for the NES! It was originally made for a game system that was NEVER released in the USA. It was called the MSX, and it was where Metal Gear first got its roots! The story was the same as the NES version, but Kojima NEVER really got a liking to the NES version as much as the MSX version. He went on to do a sequel, Metal Gear 2, for the MSX, and that game is more like the Metal Gear of today.

Snake had his trusty radar, and the plot fit in with the entire Metal Gear franchise, weird as the Solid games may be sometimes...

..."Oh MAN! That's got to be a World RECORD!"...

Anyway, what DID come out for the NES was the game "Snake's Revenge: Metal Gear 2" which Kojima had NO PART IN! Someone else other than him made that game, and Kojima resented it from day 1. For one, since WHEN was Snake in the US MARINES?! Uhh... NEVER!

The story did not fit into the original Metal Gear storyline and was a stand alone title. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't Kojima's vision!

Skim forward a good 15 or so years to today with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. For the first time ever, both of the MSX Metal Gear games will be available (legally) in the USA for the first time, and probably across the globe too. These unlockable games contain PERFECT and PERFECT TRANSLATED ports of the original MSX games for the gaming public to enjoy. If you are a Metal Gear fan of ANY kind, then this new mix of MGS3 is a MUST have! I can NOT stress that enough!

So now you know the REAL secret about the early Metal Gear games. For the record, there was never a release on the SNES as far as I can tell. Kojima kept his Metal Gear series pretty much under wraps until the PS1 came out. Although I might be wrong about that... anyone else know of any Kojima games between MG2 and MGS?

Guerilla War- the only game that actually forced my ass as a kid to learn the ways of cheating(Rocks any shooting game out there, if this became an FPS no one and i mean no one will beat it with out cheating)

Megaman- duh, i love the rockman with his pellets of DOOM! Megaman 2 soundtrack is the best of all of them too

Double dragon - played the arcade and nes versions but say the arcade is better

Rygar- OMG thanks for reminding me of that game cym, Who doesnt like swinging a shield around like a weapon

River City Ransom- Outweighs double dragon in beat em ups, we need some fresh remakes of this even though the 2nd one was decent i want another sequel

Super Mario 1- who remembers the trick on getting infinite lives with the turtle shell and the steps :)BOOYAKA! It was my first time cheating in a game and most memorable too

TMNT- all of them kicked ass so i choose em all

Cymbaline22, such a big list, yet you forgot or never played Faxanadu and Shadowgate? Shame on you. :p

Super Mario 1- who remembers the trick on getting infinite lives with the turtle shell and the steps :)BOOYAKA! It was my first time cheating in a game and most memorable too
It isn't exactly 'infinite lives'.
The game will keep increasing the counter beyond its valid upper bound (Way to go SMB1 programmers! Never heard of bounds checking, guys?) which leads to weird gobble-dee-goop in your lives counter. If you let the trick run on long enough after that point, then the integer that stores your lives will overflow and will infact become a very large negative number.
Iirc if you keep collecting 1-ups after the overflow happens, and you happen to climb back up to zero lives, you die and it's game over.

The best I can think of for the NES system,
Super Mario.
Rockman series. The third installment was the one I enjoyed the most.
Contra. Probably the first game I owned for NES.
Gradius. Need not to define!
Adventure Island. You gotta love this dude! Hundreds of hours of nonstop gameplay. :D
Batman 2. The sound track + gameplay was splendid in this one compared to the other Batman series on NES.

As for the Jap games, they're boundless to mention. :p
Captain Tsubasa is one game out of many that I have mastered playing. It concerns around a legendary Japanese Soccer player. I've spent countless of hours playing this. You can blame that on my local tv for dubbing this show and giving us the interest in to followup on this. :D

Hell, how could I forget Battle Toads, I've spent hours playing this... the funny thing about this is that when you double team with your friends... you could accidently hit your teammate and he might get upset with you and hit you back. :D

definately street gangs (river city ransom to some people, street gangs to other people) street gangs was the un-toned down version of River city ransom, where it had a story involving schoolkids and the gangs were schoolkids too.

Contra
Rockman 1-3
Mario 3
River City Ransom
Double Dragon
Shadow of the Ninja
Batman
Gradius

Awesome games, espcially love the mega man music too. And I'd like to mention Legend of Kage, which for the longest time, I thought had no ending, I looked up a faq out of curiosity and apparently there is an end stage O_O;

I'm going to buy a nes today again. i am doing it for duck hunt so i can beat my friend's score ^_^.
By the way does anyone know a nes game where you where a guy that trew a boomerang. And if you collected a powerup you transformed in some sort of cyborg. I think it had the axel f theme in it but i could be wrong. can someone help me to the title. My little brother thinks that it is called blade. But back then our english wasn't that good so we gave our own names to games.

River City Ransom (go stone hands and dragon feet!)
Duck Hunt still has an almost cult like following...and does anyone else besides me think that that game was literally years ahead of its time int echnology? Consider how basic the NEs is in terms of input, and here it can use a GUN...scary.

I was a fan of World Class Track Meet also, esp wht long jump where u jump off the pad for like 5 seconds and then jump back on, haha...

Mega Man 2, esp for the soundtrack (Dr. Wily stage 1, cmon, you all know it =P)
Tetris...cause its Tetris

Dragon Warrior, the definitive tons of text RPG, where its obscenely hard to win unless you get good weapons.

Mike Tysons Punchout (before the whole rape allegation thing)...no other game made you so on the top of ur reflexes as when u fight the big guy, those instant KO punches are like a blur!

Mario 3 cause that game was just huge...(and it was in The Wizard! haha)

Way too many others to name.

IMHO I think the game Guardian Legend is one of the best games on the NES. If you havn't played this I seriously recommend it.

Basically you control this guardian who must stop a big planet thing from crashing into the earth.(It was probably a few years before I found out the guardian was female, take that, Samus!)
Half the game is an overhead shooter that can get real hard. The other half, an rpg-like top down mode. You can upgrade several different weapons, you main weapon, and your life bar. One thing that surprised me was the amount of graphics this game had, I didnt know the NES could do that!
I still have the original cartrige for it and will never get rid of it.

To XCalibro:

The game you are thinking of is called "Power Blade". I believe it was published by Sunsoft, but I may be wrong about that. It also had a sequel, "Power Blade 2" that was also made for the NES.

Also, if you like that, then I believe you will also like "Shatter Hand" from Jaleco.

definitely every great game which spawned more than one sequel is an instant classic for me: the ninja gaiden, castlevania, contra, ikari warriors, double dragon, mega man, kunio series(super dodgeball, river city ransom, some track and field game, i forget the title). other games i loved were faxanadu, athena, dragon spirit, ninja warriors, bionic comando, macross, xenophobia(blown away by the fact that it was the first game that featured split screen 2player simultaneous play, strider(there was much hype to this game), muscle(native american/m.bison dude=top tier), prowrestling, gyromite(responsible for many quarrels and heated arguments), and many others which escape my memory at the moment.

oh yeah boo's go to track and field power pad game(resulted in many embarassing home videos).....j/k gotta love it. btw anybody owned and used any of the nes accessories, i had the robot(think it was compatible with gyromite), and zapper..... anybody used the powerglove, think it was for punchout, howd it work anywayz?

.....up,up,down,down, left, right, left, right..... u know the rest
