Like the title says...
Which sonsoles will die first?
Sure Next Gen consoles are coming out and since all the news is all over the place... Our we focusing less on our consoles today...
Does some devolopers making good or bad games for their "Only for *insert console here*"?
Lets see
(Note - This is only my opinion, dont follow it... Flame me if you want since i might be a b!tch *sry*. ^_^)
Gamecube
Price - 99 USD
Controller Ports - 4
Easy to Carry? - Yes
My 2 cents - I really think this is the underdog of all consoles. I like how its doesnt compete with the others and still have great games. Nintendo brings some great games that may keep other people saying its too "kiddy". But this is almost like the PS2 (game wise), this thing throws out tons and tons of inovated games (Recently Geist and Killer 7).
Games made by Nintendo - Nintendo has been family friendly ever since the beggining, so its not natural for them to bring us a M rated a game. Most Nintendo games will feature Mario or the word Mario in the title.... Which is somewhat annoying for awhile... But games that are simple, fun. can be played by anyone, gamers all alike. Nintendo games are not to pass.
Cons - No online play hurts it since most games made by Nintendo are made for multiplayer. And the taste in some games wont appeal to other gamers.
Next Gen - The Revolution does what almost everyone has done in the past, yet the standout feature is downloading games via online. And rumors of classic playing online too (Contra 2 player?!)
Pros - Great games made by Nintendo and other companies you might not of heard of. And American and Japanese Devolopers loves the Gamecube.
Added Crap to the Gamecube
Rev.Controller
Added by someone below...
We havent seen the Rev. Controller so its a big mystery. Rumor has it that it will have a touch screen and all the bells and whistles almost like the DS.
Lack of RPGS
Most people in this world love RPG, Gamecube barely has any. Sure you can remember Paper Mario and Tales of w/e.... But the rest seem to be crappy or gone. Gamecube games are usually for family members and some older gamers.
Working on XBOX report
Xbox
Price - 225 USD (Seen at Costco with 2 games included)
Controller Ports - 4
Easy to Carry - Hell no
My 2 cents - Havent been paying attention to my poor Xbox for some reasons. Most games that have came out involves some kind of gun or some action. In the past though i've enjoyed it alot, I liked to graphics and the feel.
Games made by Microsoft - Game I only remember and everyone else does is Halo 2. But I havent really like it since it just felt so average (I guess I was comparing to the PC). Microsoft games though are now mostly actions games or Sim games. Some that are arcadey but doesnt go that well (NFL Fever mabey?).
Cons - The biggest is blow is that most Japanese companies dont want to do games on the Xbox. Sure you can remember Temco but anyone else that your friends heard of. AH HA. Anyway *cough cough* Japanese games make the best games on earth. So yeah no Japanese games = downhill
Next Gen - Xbox 360 does have some mind blowing looking games. But we havent heard that much from the gameplay department since everything has been announce. The best part is free online play and it comes out November.
I just want to say this but the CON of this next gen is that the backwards compatabillty only works with some games. That right "some", I think they said the best selling games.
Pros - Online play is perfect and a Halo 2 added is pretty good. Memory is built in it and that the graphics and gameplay for some games are great.
Added Crap for the Xbox
Games almost like the PC
If you have a PC you dont really need an Xbox, usually the best games on it are FPS and Racing games. And PC does well with FPS no doubt, and in some ways with racing games. But some FPS, Action games are just really the samething but feels very lower than the PC. (Ex. Playing Call of Duty on the PC, playing on the Xbox feels less fun.). And do you really need to pay an extra 20$ a month when you already pay for connection?
(Sorry I really have nothing much to say about the Xbox)
Playstation 2
Price - 129 USD
Controller Ports - 2
Easy to Carry - Most easy to carry console out right now (ignore the ps1)
My 2 cents - I dont have one nor do I plan to buy one. But seeing it from a far makes me want to buy one. In my opinion for the games I think theres either the Great ones or the Bad ones. Theres almost never a MEH.
Games made by Sony - Sony makes the best games ever to date (published or devoloped). GT4 I was really shocked since in some screen I could never tell it was real or not. Sony is really smart and dominating the market with games for everyone and they sell well.
Cons - I think the biggest con is usually not enough games that online playable. And 2 ports? BS! Easy to break, and some games have some frame rate problems on it (DUB).
Next Gen - It looks really bright since most games on it are really slick. And its does ohh so more and improves on many things.
Pros - Inovated games that are f*ckin great (Katamari Damacy was a shocker). And games on the PS2 are usually great and less and less crappy games are made.
Who will die
Just like the 2nd post.
XBOX WILL DIE!
I really dont pay attention to hit, hell I look more at the PS2 section instead of the Xbox. And Gamecube am starting to like all over again. And since japanese companies dont make games for the Xbox, that makes a big big wound in it.
Work on portables later....

I'd bet on Xbox to burn out first. For one thing, Microsoft doesn't have much fan support in Japan as Nintendo and Sony do. For two things, Xbox is still the most expensive out of the three consoles, and it's not even worth that price (my opinion). For three things, it breaks easily.
I think Nintendo will be the big loser in both the next-gen console and handheld races.
Although DS has actually been selling better than the PSP, but I personally don't see the longevity for it to last for upcoming years.
totally agree with orka, don't think that nintendo will last in the next gen. haven't been keeping up with the latest news but as far as i know all the revolution has going for it is the backwards compatibility, although many people may consider it a great feature, many people may consider it a crappy feature due those little things called roms. also don't think that the backwards compatibility feature will be fun for very long, may be at first until u realize after beating ur favorate nes game a hundred times over that the games of the past pale in comparrison to the games of today. as for myself ill stick with ps so far they have had a promising library of games and a hefty amount of japanese titles, all u have to do is have the sense to avoid the crappy ones and u'll be fine. don't know much about the next gen features please keep us posted on further developments in the console wars, inquiring minds would like to know.

Well I have an Xbox, and I say that it was a bit disappointing. PS2 is probably the best now. But I don't regret buying the Xbox though, because I've learned to live with any decision that I make and try to get the best out of it. As for the nextgen consoles, Sony may win this again due to its fan base and arguably better selection of games. But I'm not making calls just yet.

I think Nintendo is soon going to focus mainly on hand held games. They're clearly out done by Microsoft and Sony, as far as capabilities go. I think they'll produce games for Microsoft and Sony, but not make any more consoles, like how Sega is doing. And between Microsoft and Sony, Sony will probably come out the victor. They're close as far as capabilities are concerned, but Sony has so many more good games. If Nintendo ends up surviving and Microsoft ends up dying in the console race, good for Nintendo, but Sony will out live both of them.

Console: Gamecube will die first, obvious reason being, fewer third-party support, smaller fan base and its big hit Zelda is now delayed to next year. If anything, GC 'died' quite a while back
Handheld: Tough call, all three have the necessary amount of points to make them die off first. GBASP: because Nintendo is backing the NDS more. PSP: With its lacklustre gaming lineup. DS: People from the west prefer the cool factor of the PSP.
Granted that, GBASP is still selling and is a better handheld console than PPS and DS. PSP on the otherhand had its multimedia capabilities which may excite tech savvy people. DS has its great games, easy to pick up and selling like hot cakes in Japan.
If i had to pick and choose, PSP will die first from this category.
Its the console problem which Nintendo is having trouble with.

Um... I'd like to consider what everybody before just said and agree on the point that the Gamecube is selling pretty bad compared to the others mainly because of bad-strategy game development and market performance (let's just wait and see what changes will come up once Twilight Princess comes out), but I don't think the brand itself will be the one to die out first. I'd still like to see what the revolution is capable of. As many (or should I say few) can remember, what's most important about the Rev is its unrevealed controller (add that to the your post Cherry).
As for the handhelds, there are two Nintendo systems and one Sony. However, Nintendo did notice that due to the different nature of the DS compared to the typical handheld, the system is not functioning as a competitor to the PSP but more as another KIND of system. Seeing the fact that they are not entirely competing with Sony in this market, they made up all that BS about the DS being their third pillar and said that the GBA would give off an upgraded offspring to fully compete with the PSP. I'm too lazy right now to give you all the sources, but it's all on IGN and probably more sites if you look well.
All this said, I'd say that the GBA would be the first to die in the handheld arena. The DS and the PSP will duke it out for some time until something weird pops up. As for the consoles, if Nintendo is betting everything on the TP they're surely going to lose the Cube (even if they do sell better than the other two for an entire semester). If they have something up their sleeve besides going next-gen, then I'd say the XBOX will be the first to go because of poor game variety and innovation (the system is TOTALLY hardcore "thumbs up", but that's what I got my PC for "thumbs down").

If any of those were to die, I'd say Gamecube. It has nice stuff, but seems like Nintendo is never going to realize gamers have grown up over the years... They have a few decent things of course, but if you ask me the only reason it's still going is parents buying it because they assume their kids will like it. X-box has weaknesses too, primarily that it thinks adult means boobs and violence rather than smart. However, Microsoft is rich as Croesus so they can afford to play for the long game. I think Sony may not have the best technology, but they really understand the market. They've been doing it for a long time, and learned their lessons well. Speaking for myself, I'm pretty loyal to them for being the first company to take me as a customer seriously. Handhelds I do like the Game Boy Advance though. The psp will have to get cheaper (or me a lot richer!) before it's affordable, no matter how good it is. Plus it seems like 90 percent of the PSP games are sports, and I just don't like sports games. Must be paradise for the people who do...

Portables
PSP
Price - 250 USD (plus 40-150 USD if you want a better DUO)
Easy to damage - Yes
My 2 cents - I've just got a PSP recently and the games on it are great. But sometimes it feels like am playing an updated GBA games with better graphics and 4 more buttons to use. Taking care of it is a pain were I need to bring that eye glass cloth everywhere I go and putting it in the PSP sleve. Music player and Video player is great (photo viewer to me is very useless), but to hold all your favorite stuff or like a movie. You need to bust out another 150$ for 1gb of space. Not cool, so this is basically.... A portable that for the rich, and the caring.
Games made for it - Sure its powerful and has better graphics than the rest, but does that really matter? I had really no fun with ATV. These games are not really inovated at all, some yes Luminies and.... (thinks)........
uhhhh...well.... yeah.... In my opinion, Games on it are just like its older brother but with zits, cheesy haircut, and a broken wrist. It just that most of the games we've seen it all before. And the PSP games we have out in the US seems to be filled with racing games...
Cons - Easy to damage so you can scratches, marks, fingerprints easily on it.
Games are great but some cant really cut. And some of the games we've all played before (Spiderman, Dead to Right). And too much racing titles out now.
Future Games - It looks like it has everything you like, RPGS, Sports, ect.
And its all your favorite games from the consoles into your pocket.
Pros - Great graphics and lots of multimedia. Some games are really great (Ridge Racer, Wipeout).
DS and GBA work on it later.

Even though I'm already sick and goddamn tired of threads like this I think it is about here I make my last stand. I'll not do an in-depth analysis. I'll just write one liners.
PS2
Pros: Huge lineup of Japanese and US titles. Alot of variety to choose from. Eyetoy.
Cons: Most of the Japanese lineups are crap anyway (admit it. As much a anime fan as I am...I cannot force myself to like all Japanese games that much...). DISK READ ERROR. Crap hardware...
XBox
Pro: Strong Western developers support. So strong Microsoft don't need Japan to succeed. Forza Motorsport. Incredibly vibrant Online Community.
Con: Aside from Tecmo, very few other Japanese developers. For me though Tecmo is more than enough.
Gamecube
Pro: SOLID Gaming experience for the young and old. All you guys who said Nintendo needs to grow up, needs to grow up. On second thought, don't bother. You guys probably can never see past the graphics anyway.
Cons: Lack of a solid online infrastructure hampers Nintendo's aim to share fun.
Noticed I never considered whether a console is easy to carry around? With wireless controllers and online capabilities, I no longer carry my XBox around the way I did my Sega Genesis.
But I still think the XBox would die first. The reason is simple, the XBox 360's release date and the fact that Microsoft themself have somewhat given up on it themselves. XBox 360's relatively limited power compared to PS3 means that games do not have to be drastically changed to be ported over. From a designer standpoint therefore it might make more sense to bring the product over to XBox 360 as a launch title. This in part also helps in XBox360's sales, and Microsoft can cut royalty costs for this act.
DS
Pros: Cool functions over sheer power. Can survive the Everest.
Cons: Same old. Poor third party support... sigh... Limited utilization of all the DS' functions as of today.
PSP
Pro: PS in a handheld. Sharp visuals, clean sounds, large LCD screen.
Cons: LCD screen (dead pixels all over the f*ck shot), fragile hardware. Battery life. The goddamn fad. Poor lineup.
For handhelds the one who'll last is going to be the DS. Rather than creating a device that can do many things, Nintendo created something to play fun great games. Games so great even adults can find fun if they're mature enough to look past the graphics.
Seriously I have no problem with cute 2d graphics when I have absolutely no problem with Anime.

Well, graphics aren't the only factor, but they are important aren't they? Anyway I do think gamecube is acceptable with graphics. Frankly, no matter how great the system is, if the games developed for it are lame it doesn't matter. Both Xbox and Playstation have had some real stinkers... Suikoden 4 and a stupid bowling game for the xbox, to be precise. But you shouldn't be so down on people for criticising Nintendo. I was just listening to Analysis on the BBC. Their correspondent also concluded Nintendo was an also-ran. I'm sure everyone got their start with Nintendo and has fond memories, like me. And I did say they had some good adult games, such as resident evil. But when you say Nintendo what do you think? Is it Grand Theft Auto, or is it Super Mario?
One thing I don't think anybody mentioned so far, and which slipped my mind until I heard it on the radio, is the importance of China in the market. You can be sure they'll be a huge factor in the years to come. My guess is that Xbox will have the advantage there, because of their lead in online play. Piracy will have to be addressed somehow though...

Not so in Japan...at least not nearly as much as in the West. Notice games like Super Robot Wars and Bust-a-move. Notice all their bishoujo computer games!!! (and if you want to talk consoles, ren'ai games like Tokimeki Memorial!) Fact: (in general) people in Japan are o-kay with 2D graphics.

Point taken :) However, I would argue that just because graphics are 2 D does not make them bad. For example, Final Fantasy 7 was a playstation 1 game that had graphics (in some parts at least) that surpass those of many a rush job modern console game. The bishoujo computer games don't have high tech graphics by any means, but they put a lot of effort into character design and it shows. Perhaps graphics are like air, you only really appreciate it when it is absent...

Have you ever played Alien Hominid? That game has messy 2D drawings for graphics, but it beats out lots of today's 3D games in the field of gameplay. It reminded old time gamers how much fun the Metal Slug series brought them.
Then there's Starfox for SNES. In my eyes, it's a game that still beats Starfox Adventures for GC by outweighing it with the gameplay a Starfox game is supposed to have.
Another example is Super Metroid, a game that ties with today's Metroid Prime series although it's for SNES. It's got much more challenge than a Metroid Prime player today can handle.
By the way, this is my own personal opinion that not many people seem to agree with, but I think FFIII is better than FFVII, or FFVIII, or FFXI for that matter. Sure the graphics aren't anything impressive, but it had one of the most enjoyable characters and storyline (not to mention the mighty MagiTech Armors =D), in FF history.
Bottomline, I don't believe in importance of graphics, unless it's so messed up that it makes it hard to differentiate from a 5 year old's drawing. Explains why I still play SNES today.

Interesting idea... I might go for the DS before I grab a PSP, since they now have at least one game I want. Advance Wars :D I can sort of see Nintendo dropping the console stuff, but keeping up with handhelds since they're really good at that. Plus it's only a 2 way competition there, between sony and nintendo, so their chances are are better.
XBOX dies then Gamecube then PS2.
DS then PSP.

Same Old? - What do you mean?
Poor third party support? - What are you talking about?? Konami, Namco, Capcom, Sega, Treasure, Majestco (RIP), Rare, Bandai, Ganbarion etc...
Limited Utilization of DS functions as of today? - What kind of things did you want...?
