Well the easiest way to do this would be through blending options (if you're using photoshop).
Just right-click on the layer that you want a shadow and click blending options or double click on the layer (make sure you don't double click the text though or you'll just end up renaming the layer). When this is done, click on the "Outer shadow" checkbox and your picture should have a shadow now. If you want to edit the settings of the shadow, then click on the Outer Shadow tab (NOTE: Clicking on the outer shadow box and the tab is different. You'll know you have the tab selected if the square with the Outer shadow text and box is highlighted blue).
Now, the important thing to know is that if you want a certain character or "thing" (for lack of better wording) shadowed away from the rest of the picture, then some more work is needed. You'll have to get that picture on a blank layer and erase the background from it. There are 3 ways to do this; you can either:
1) Use magic wand to marquee the picture out - Beginner
2) Create a vector mask using the pen tool - Intermidiate-ish
3) Use the eraser tool and go crazy :D - Beginner but it takes a LOT longer than the other 2 methods.
