If you are a first-person-shooter maniac go with X-box. Otherwise, PS2 might be better because it has a wide variety of games. I like strategy and rpg games, so I say new PS2.

X-what? I don't know what type of games you like to play...but here in Japan you will find more game selections for PS2 than X-whatever-box. Yeah, it's a nice tried by Microsoft but it didn't make it. The store I shop often in Akihabara have more DC selections than X-box. However, against all my instance I purchased a X-box anyway and now it's sitting very nicely on my shelf as a book weight holding my PS2 game collections in place.

PS2, and if you dont have the money to afford 2 game libraries, mod the ps2, since a modded Xbox wont let you go live. Its what I did

The bold part is what I have trouble with for having two consoles. I dont have a job and im in the middle of searching for one but I need to save up money for christmas if I do get my job and buy my family some presents.

If you like rpgs, and a wide variety of gaming, go ps2. If you like 500 types of sports games, shooting games, and 500 types of ... more sports games and shooting games (and what, 5 rpgs?) stay with your xbox. If you want 2000+ rpgs, stay with sony :D
or, turn your xbox into a media center (stream your anime to your main tv), and keep the ps2 for gaming. ^_^ What? not like you can game with an xbox anyway, lol.

Seems many of you have a very slim idea of what exactly is available for Xbox. It has RPGs, while not as many as PS2, but then again, you only list the same 5 games over and over...so give it a rest(name me some that don't start with Final-_-;)
I've not once heard someone say "Oh it has Suikoden 3, or Wild Arms 3, or Disega, or La Pucelle Tactics, or Arc the Lad, so your almost guran-damn-tee'd to find a whole mess of either bad, or underrated games for PS2, so there is a bonus.
I myself liked the PS2, but after my third one bit the dust, I sold my games, and moved on. It can be said though, that if you only buy the crap everyone else is buying, then you have no varity, hence, your system will be collecting dust rather fast. For my Xbox, I avoided the Halo and the Fables, and went with other titles, like Arx Fatalis, Crimson Skies, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and so on.
If you buy the hyped up crap, belive me, any console you buy will be disapointing. The only game that actually lived up to the hype behind it was Ninja Gaiden, and that Grade A 100% kickass game is ONLY on Xbox.
Xbox has Strategy games, Action titles, Sports, First Person Shooters(that are lightyears beyond anything the PS2 can do), adventure games, rare exclusives that almost always rock, and solid online game support/multiplayer.
Also, PS2 is entering its 5th year. So its doubtful that much of anything will be coming out for it in the next months, while Xbox is set to see many good games, including another RPG by the makers of KOTOR, which was rated as one of the BEST RPGs by many sources.
Of course, you can say I'm baised against PS2, but the truth is, you people name the same 10-12 games over and over, and not ONCE did I hear anyone mention a good title, that wasn't all over the TV.
If you want classic stuff like Suikoden 3, RAD, La Pucelle Tactics, and alot of fun to play Japanese games, go with PS2. If you want a wide selection of games, from all over the place, like Breakdown, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Crimson Skies go with Xbox.
Its not only the games, nor is it the fact that one has somthing the other lacks. Its all about what you like, and what you don't like, and your particular style of gaming.
Btw Sony doesn't have 2000+ Rpgs. Not even if you count all the US PSX and PS2 releases, and also, you played them all huh? So tell me, how was Enternal Eyes or Dragon Seed, or even Kouldelka?
If you like 500 types of sports games, shooting games, and 500 types of ... more sports games and shooting games (and what, 5 rpgs?) stay with your xbox. If you want 2000+ rpgs, stay with sony
No thats the usual line used by people who can't seem to grasp that the PS2 is on its last legs, and that despite having the largest library of games, can you even remember hald of those games, and if so, didn't alot of them just suck, or feel medicore?
Oh yeah, one final thought, did you ever wonder why multiport games always look 20 times better on Xbox, let alone play 20 times better, and offer extras the PS2 version will never support?
The one element I didn't go into here is the Gamecube. A nice system, good for parties especially, but it is no where near as popular as PS2 or Xbox, speaking of older gamers anyway.
Nintendo nailed their own coffin though, by playing in that tired flute that they "Would not have mature games on a family based console". If it was a Family based console, wouldn't it have been more wise to market it as such, and not a gaming machine?
I love the little cube though, and easily said, it has a few of the best games console gamers are likely to see in their lifetimes, so no bashing here, as I love Eternal Darkness and Viewtiful Joe, and even play Lost Kingdom II from time to time.

I'm surprised (and happy) that I actually received an intelligent response about a ps2/xbox debate. Neo, know that you're a very small minority xbox owner. :) somewhere along the line however, we all missed one thing. We all buy what's best for us. I hope you'll agree to that. To me, and my gaming needs, the Xbox isn't worth my time. The games I want to play are all pc/ps2 (well, and segacd, which i still have. Segacd's Lunar and Popfull Mail are too cute). yes, I'll happily admit I'm sony biased, and will most likely remain so. I can't stand playing fps games on a console (that's what my computer's for), and 3/4 of my rpg's are all console based (psx/ps2), with only FFXi on my pc.
However, I will say i have played a ton of sony's rpgs. A lot of good imports never made it over to the us, but there are a ton. I enjoyed most of them :P So nyah. (it's not like the Dreamcast and its billion rpgs, of which we got what ... 3? hehe).
One thing I don't understand however: You cannot compare xbox/ps2 graphics. One's a x86 chipset (733mhz), while the other's a RiSC I think, running at uh, 66mhz or 266mhz i forget. That's like comparing a PowerPc and a Pentium4. The Xbox2 will look better than the Xbox 1 because it'll be newer ... does that make the Xbox1 suck? no. Looks aren't everything, either you know. I just bought Final Fantasy 1 for the psx, and I love it to death. Gameplay is just as important as anything else; I think it's a shame the current generation of "gamers" only wants pretty, and not overall quality. (perfect example: Doom3 vs HL2 *flamewar!* :D )
I'll keep an eye out for you in the future when I want intelligent discussion tho, even if it is M$ related :D

If you mean Final Fantasy Origins, then we are two in the same boat, as I just got that one for PSX myself. Its nothing amazing eyecandy wise, but its a remake of two, of the first and best console RPGs to date.
The fact that it was 6 was a tad annoying, as I don't see why anyone would pass that up for 6 dollars, or the Final Fantasy Anthology with FF5 and Chrono Trigger..which was 12 dollars...disapointing how all the attention was gathered by the very pretty, but ultimately flawed FFX and X-2.
I personally, still feel the PSX and SNES had some of the best games ever, and while the PS2 continues that legacy, it seems to have mostly abandoned the 2D sprite based gaming, or RPGs. Valkyrie Profile was mostly sprite based, and that game was fanatasic.
I recall games like Super Metroid, Wild Arms, Thousand Arms, Death rally, Wipeout, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of Fire 1, Tombs and Treasure, Faxandu, Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis, Vice: Project Doom, Ninja Gaiden 1-3...
No matter how great I think Xbox, PS2, or Gamecube titles are, they(at least for me) have not even begun to touch on the levels of games like Castlevania: SOTN or MULE.
I recently beat Half Life 2, and was basically feeling, somewhat empty. It had everything I could have dreamed for in a game, but it lacked somthing games of the past console generations.
It lacked the feeling that for the game developers, it was a labor of love, and feels more like a way to cash in on flashy graphics engine to me, just like Doom 3, FarCry, and even Painkiller.
These games are fun, but do any of them compare to even the range of 2D visuals in Castlevania: SOTN or Valkyrie Profile?
No.
See, when I first fired up my NES, I though "I can't get any better then this!", and then came Gameboy, and SNES, and Genesis, and Sega CD, and 3DO and...so on. I originally saw video games as simple fun derivitives to the tedium of real life, but as the games improved, so did my lack of interest.
Half Life 2, boasting the most adavnced physics engine yet to come, had me asking a question. Would I rather be killing stuff, or worrying about weither or not I could balance this hovercraft on a platform that moves up and down?
Became almost redudent, as games are supposed to be an escape, not to bring you so much realism.
Doom knew what it was, a simple game where you looked for keys and killed everything that moved. It didn't try to be a motion picture, or cinematic, or offer 40 different options for killing somthing. It had one clear cut answer for everything
-Shut up and play-
I feel, in this generation of consoles that are far beyond the SNES and PSX, we still haven't gone very far, in fact, as I see it, we went backwards.
Too many games, with too little developers care, and far too many excuses for remakes of treasured classics, that I and many people played back in the 8 bit NES.
It might just be me, but when my NES can hold my attention longer then the lastest game or console, somthing is very wrong in videogame land...that, or games have just lost their edge.
I'm not refering to nudity sex..or any of the that crap either, I'm talking about a pure fun factor, and games that you can play over and over, and never grow tired of.
It might seem as though I was rallying up for MS, and down for Sony, but thats very untrue. What I'm trying to say is, despite all the pushes for greater things in gaming, I have yet to see one game that captures my imagination like 2D games did.
It's like when my friend asked me "Why do you download Japanese games, that you can barely understand?", and I simply reply-
"I play these, because it reminds me of a time for gaming, that is now lost under a sea of M ratings and souless eyecandy"

At the moment I would have to say stick with the X Box. Don't get me wrong, I have more games that I enjoy on my PS2 than I do for my 'Box, such as my current console favorite Star Ocean 3.
The reason I say this is because I've been hearing about a severe shortage of the new version PS2 systems, and since they phased out the old one for this one, it could once again make the PS2 hard to come by new. Were this not the case though, you would have to know the types of games someone enjoys to offer a good suggestion

the xbox is "better" in terms of processor and memory. The Xbox2 will be "better" than the Xbox1. Ps2 was "better" than the Psx.
Unless a console has the games you want, it's not "better" than anything. You didn't even attempt to put any effort in your trolling :(

Xbox and PS2 focus on older ppl while Gamecube is intended on young ppl.
PS2 has games that are top notch.
Like GTA, FF, Kingdom Hearts, GT:4, ect.
Xbox focus on online game with there online line up.
Like Mech Assualt, Counter Strike, Crimson Skies, ect.
So if you like multiplayer go with Xbox because it has more online games.
If you like Good RPG and quilaty companies...PS2
(This is just me)

PS2 is a superior platform to own IMO, but I voted keep XBox because I simply dont think you will win at this point going to PS2...there isnt much life left for it...plus, the machines break soo easily. PS2 definitely has the best games (the only system which can compete with DC in terms of H games on console), but its life is at twilight.
You can mox an Xbox and play anime, what else do I need to say =P
Personally, I own Gamecube...totally dismal third party support (WTF is nintendo thinking), but I love their franchise games (although their mario -xxxx thing is getting out of hand)...and I go to any platform which has Zelda games on it...

Well... my opinion...
If I must choice I would choice a PS2 without hesitation. The games of the PS2 are much cooler to my than the ones of the X-Box. I love Japanese RPGs, and in the PS2 are too much great games to enjoy. (In fact, I want a PS2!!! I NEED A PS2!!! I WANNA PLAY SUIKODEN 3-4, STAR OCEAN 3, WILD AMRS 3, DISGAEA.... AAAGH!!! SOB SOB)
And the X-Box, for playing PC Type games, I have the PC.
The Gamecube has nice games, but I pass. And yes, Nintendo has a fame of games for younger audiences. Cute games maybe? (OK! OK! RE no count!!! :P)

I don't think Resident Evil 4 for GC is ever meant for kids...
Even Link grows up :D
Nintendo needs more 3rd party developers for its Revolution to fly.
I'm patiently waiting for Nintendo's Revolution whilst having lots of fun on my XBox. Still playing Ninja Gaiden over and over again...and realised NG1 and 2 are also included :D
And I'm not a RPG kind of person (Unless its D&D related. You know, traditional RPG), that's why I recommend the XB, but like what many said, its not abt RPGs at all, its about the kind of games you like to play.
