Just wondering what everyone's fav rpg game is. Mine so far I think is a tie between Chrono Trigger and Xenosaga. The story in Xenosaga is pretty good and I can't wait till the next one comes out here which is 2-15-05 =/ lol.

I have a bad problem with RPGs, i tend not to finish them. I like them and all but i get bored after a while. For my favorite i would say probably FFVII. Xenosaga is also good but i wont think i'll have the time to play it. My brother loves it though, hes going crazy waiting for Episode 2.

Tales of Phantasia/Tales of Eternia series, and Chrono Cross, followed by Chrono Trigger. Also loved the Breath of Fire series - all but the last, (Dragon Quarter) anyway :(

Tales series (Phantasia, Destiny 1+2, Eternia, Symphonia), especially Destiny 2. I used to like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy but choosing command in battle is kinda getting old. Tales series have action-type battle system, so your skill matters. :D

Phantasy Star Online :)
I love how the gameplay works for PSO.

chrono cross, FFVIII (even it was left with a lot of unanswered questions)

and... a chinese rpg : Heroine anthem I&II (it were in english it would surely be the best of all : best music, exciting events and story, unmatchable drawing background and more...), well you can imagine the greatness of the game since it is 6cd for the first one and 4cd for the second one. Ideal game for anime fans. Here are some screenshot of the game : 1 (http://games.sina.com.cn/z/hero2/huodong_053.shtml), 2 (http://games.sina.com.cn/z/hero2/huodong_051.shtml).

1: Deus Ex
2:Neverwinter nights
3:Icewind dale
4:Spellforce: Order of dawn
5:Freelancer

Someone might disagree with me about Deus ex and freelancer being rpg's, but: Deus Ex got a geniusly made character leveling and freelancer has the freedom to everything you want(Roleplaying, which deus ex also has) and a good relationship system.

Wow.

I miss my old table top days. (Hell I'm 27, the old days weren't too long ago) So D&D, AD&D, and actually a buddy of mine here in Oklahoma created a complete game system that you can play with 2 10 sided die. Ah the old days of AdMax (Adventure Maximum, was the name of it). My old RPG clan was called Southern Cross, and we played some mad cyberpunk shizzle back in the day. :D

As far as console etc.

FF VII
FF VIII (Don't know why everyone hated it, I was immediately addicted)
the Sega CD version of Lunar Silver Star
Beyond the Beyond (the first RPG for PS1)
and the old Kings Quest PC games (My first IBM clone ran them :D)

Mine's not a computer game. The RPG I like best is the good old Dungeons&Dragons game. :D You know it, don't deny it. With the new 3.5 rules it's become a lot more interesting to play lately. Even though it's not a computer game, it's just about the first RPG ever. But since everybody here seems to need to talk about computer games I'll name Neverwinter Nights. Yes, that game is indeed D&D on the computer. :p

Hmm. I don't have a favorite RPG game. However, I do have favorite type of RPG. I enjoy a good chaotic action (Secret of Mana/Ys6/Chrono Trigger) realtime battle with a lesser emphasis on menu command selection system (Grandia II) with a stragetical upbringing (Suikoden series/FF Tactics/Disgaea), a good story line (Xenogears(Saga)/Final Fantasy/Suikoden/Star Ocean series), and graphics/special effects that's pleasing to the eyes. If ever such a game that has all these combine elements, please let me know! It'll be my favorite RPG of all time.

Oh I forgot to include; musical scores, good music is a plus.

I like Y's and the Legend of Heroes series, the Shining series is also very good. I can't wait for Shining Tears. If anyone gets the jap ps2 ver. please let me know! Tactical rpg games are great as well. And lets not forget the great Seiken Densetsu 3!

I've got LOTS that I love. My favorites are...

1. Lufia II / Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross (Lufia had tons of heart, Chrono Trigger had tons of style, Chrono Cross had the second best battle system behind Grandia II)

2. Grandia / Grandia II (Grandia IS better than FFVII, but not by much)

3. Final Fantasy VIII (VIII was radically different, and the Junction system does NOT suck, unless you are the type that likes to tape your controller, leave for a few days, and come back to level 70 characters. Learn the Junction System, l4m3rZ!)

4. Tales of Phantasia / Tales of Eternia (Destiny was too awkward for me; if you're gonna have a combo system, make it work, pleez k thx)

5. Seiken Densetsu 3 (Holycrapthisgameisgood)

6. Persona 2 (This game is like, really hard unless you learn the system, just like FFVIII. Also, Maya = coolest female RPG character EVER. She's cute, likes high school age boys, has a messy room, a hot friend, and a cool job)

7. Terranigma (The first truly mature game, before Xenogears came and wrecked everything :))

8. Star Ocean: The Second Story (Claude > Fayt)

but Lufia II: Rise of The Sinistrals is still my absolute favorite.

Waspman

Great RPGs, IMO:
Xenogears
Seiken Densetsu 3
Disgaea (I wouldn't consider it a RPG but Aku put it on there so sure, why not)
Tactics Ogre (if I put Disgaea, why not put TO? :D )
Valkyrie Profile

let's seee

#1 for me it's a tie between FF7 and Phantasy Star 4 =) both gripped me to my TV for so many hours of my life >_>;

#2 then... Xenogears and FF9
#3 lufia 2 + chrono trigger & chrono cross
#4 Valkyre Profile + Secret of Mana & Y's 6 (can't read it yet though lol)
I will add Zwei!! when it's in a language I can read too ^_^;

FF8's junction system may have been a cool idea but it was still boring as hell! The wrighting was much much better then FF7 though...

chocobo
10-27-2004, 08:52 AM
FF6
FF7
Seiken Densetsu 3
FF Tactics

FF6 has to be the best RPG in terms of characters, story and music. If only they can do a remake of it with updated graphics.
FF7 has a good story too, can't wait for the movie to come out.
SD3 is the best action RPG I've played.
FF Tactics, I still remember spending countless night not sleeping playing this game.. :)

My favorites are:

Chrono Trigger (sure pushed the SNES to its limits, even on the sound)
Fire Emblem (it was quite fun until I used cheats)
Final Fantasy __ (I'm not sure which one, but it's an old one where after you beat a monster, sometimes there's an item, like meat or something left, which your characters can eat and transform into a monster of the same class, and can even mix and match to form neat new "characters" like a Medusa with instant-kill magic  )

Final Fantasy VIII. Squall's always been my favorite Final Fantasy character. I also like Chrono Cross for the fact that it ties into Trigger so scantly. I think it cool to find out that the only thing that ties the two games together is a minor character from the first.

Xenogears is my favorite because of depthful storyline. Xenosaga shows promise, episode 2 is looking very deep.

Chrono Trigger, hands-down.

It's actually the only RPG I really cared for in general.

Compelling story, great characters, awesome spells & attacks, beautiful graphics and sound.

One of the best gams to grace the SNES.

8-bit: Miracle Warriors (Sega master system)
16-bit: Phantasy Star IV for Sega megadrive (genesis)
32-bit: Xenogears although i really have a soft spot for Wild Arms 1&2
PC: Fallout

But my alltime favorite rpg series is definetly Phantasy star (not counting the crap online games). I can't wait for the US release of Phantasy Star remakes on PS2 =)

Don't have console, so I'll go for PC RPG games.

In no particular order:

On a side note, I played FFX on my friend PS2 once and I love it. Really wish I have a PS2.

hmmm favorite RPG? I played alot of them and there is no favorite coz most of them was newer instaled again (as i use only pc). Here is of the ones that got in my memory for long time:
1. Fallout 1/2 (not jRPG but i think it's best computer RPG ever)
2. FF7
3. Knights of Xantar 4 (emm im not sure the number tho I may check it if enyone care) this was my first japanese RPG actualy.

At this moment im plaing in Breath Of Fire 4 and it's quite good. Enyway there is nothing better than tried and true real RPG with Real Game Master and i think best is Warhammer. (do not missunderstand with Warhammer Fantasy battle and Warhammer 40000 they are all diferent games)

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

Amazing soundtrack, incredible graphics, but a kinda-bare storyline. Running around finding trees and stuff. o.o; And the whole level-up system is annoying. And the GBA-need-or-else-it's-hard. But still a good one. XD

well, my favorite rpg-like games are:

1st. Final Fantasy Online ( I had to quit playing cause it cost to much, i had five characters :( aaand it consummed almost every waking minute of my life for 3 months)

2nd. Star Wars - Knights of the Old Rupublic, beat it in 3 days

3rd. Zelda 64 - Ocarina of Time - Beat it in one week, i tried Majora's Mask, but I didnt like the time limit, i HATE games with time limits, they stress me out. Like the time i played Sonic, can't remember which one, and i couldnt get past this level cause i always ran out of time or drowned. I ended up breaking the control in rage

RPG with which I met for the first time was "Dragon Quest 3".
Even now, I cann't forget the feeling of the excitement at that time.
..various occupations, change-of-occupation system, the vast world...
However graphics may evolve, while I am reading a book completely, I like
RPG which can swell imaginative power as the sight is imagined.
Is it the appearance whose I am an old person completely? :p :D

if zelda is one an rpg then it definitely has to be on top of my list (zelda 64 was a masterpiece, majora;s mask is ok and wind waker would have been even better if it wasn't so easy and so few dungeons, still an awesome game tho). then chrono trigger and chrono cross, then final fantasy 6 then the other final fantsies. that's for the classics
also check out tales of symphonia and baten kaitos for gamecube. they're interesting and u might like them for their innovations.

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Final Fantasy (everything else... I to VI, VIII to IX, tactics, Anthology, etc, etc...)
3. squaresoft games (Chrono Trigger/Cross, Mana series, Xenogear/saga, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve/Eve 2, etc, etc...)
4. Suikoden series, Lunar series, Wild Arms series, Grandia series, Star Ocean series, Breath of Fire series, Lufia series, Golden Sun series (GBA), ...

Other notable RPGs...
Seiken Densetsu 3
Legend of Dragoon
Valkyrie Profile
Front Mission 3
Rhapsody
...

the only "western" rpg i liked was Neverwinter Nights + 'tis mods and expansions...
i guess the flexibility of the game sucked me in...

current rpg i'm playing with? - final fantasy - dawn of souls (ff1 and ff2 combined in one package) (GBA)

Personally I really love RPGs like Pokemon series & Jade Cocoon series, the whole taking care of creatures and breeding them. I just picked up Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, I like the "fusing" creatures bit so I am loving that one too. Other RPGs that I enjoyed playing over the years were the Grandia series, Tsugunai (although the graphics of this game weren't the greatest, it was fun.) plus I spent hours on FFX too, it was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played. There are sooo many great RPGs out these days that I just wished there were more hours in a day to play them all!

Agree about the battle system.
Have you tried out the earlier Tales-games? Like Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny?

Probably Neverwinternights... I like the scenario but also the gameplay and possibilities of actions (you can also create many different characters).

*FFVIII (Story lacked, but the characters where very good, also the places you went where superb. I liked the concept very much)
*FFX (Great!, man did I play this alot, great graphics and nice world. There could be abit more action and beter places. The END of this game sucks mega @$$)
*FFX2 (Interesting new battle mode. Only 3 characters and you just got too much options. The story is a downfall and i am just getting crazy of visiting the same places over and over)
*Sakura Wars 2,3,4, (I lluv sakura and all the characters, the story and graphics are definatelly lacking but i don't care :) )
*PSO (I played this game because of the characters and the nice world. The graphics can't match FFX and the suroundings can be a joke sometimes.)

I've played Chrono Trigger, I've beaten it, I loved it...but it's not a favourite. :( I will forever worship Suikoden II and Final Fantasy Tactics. Suikoden II is my favourite RPG, and Final Fantasy Tactics is my favourite tactical RPG, although Vandal Hearts comes in close there.

1- XenoGears (the story is the most important thing in a RPG, and this game has the best plot ever made for a videogame, XenoSaga is a joke comparing to this game)
2- Vagrant Story (the best dungeon game...)
3- Chrono Trigger (the classic)
4- Final Fantasy Tactics (the best FF ever made, I love the job system)
5- Breath of Fire III (fav chapter of the saga)

Um... Here's a top five, in no particular order. (though Xenogears is probably my absolute favourite ^^; )

Xenogears (In my opinion, this is far and away the most fantastic story in a game to date, bar none. It's also got a wonderful soundtrack. That's really about it, the gameplay is average and the graphics are pretty poor but... Wow, what an adventure ^.^)

Final Fantasy VII (Mmhm, it's perhaps not the best story that the FF series had to offer, but it's probably the most ambitious undertaking. It simultaneously brought the series into 3D and a futuristic setting, which was a pretty big contrast to previous installments. Plus I first played it while going through some really bad times, and it...helped me I guess ^^; The music's pretty, the visuals were somewhat revolutionary and it set a new aesthetic standard for RPGs to adhere to. Whether that was a good thing or not is debatable, but...yeah, for all that it did, I love Final Fantasy VII :))

Suikoden II (I still haven't bottled up the courage to play through Suikoden II again. What began, for me, as a fairly average sequel to a fairly average game, swiftly made me cry more than any movie that I've seen in a long time. It's utterly heartbreaking. No, seriously. ^_^; It's not technologically a huge step up from Suikoden 1, but the story is leaps and bounds ahead of the prequel. The relationship between the hero, Nanami and Jowy is just about the best non-romantic relationship that I can remember in an RPG well...ever... It's quite rare for the genre to directly tackle the subject of very close friendship, it crops up a lot less often than that of romance, but Suikoden II handles it remarkably well. I also utterly adore Jowy, but that's not got much to do with anything ^_~)

Chrono Trigger (Everything about it was...stunning at it's time of release, and it's aged remarkably well :) The soundtrack is excellent, the graphics are pretty damn good for it's release date, the central theme of time travel is very well executed, and it's downright fun. There's little, if anything, that I don't like about Chrono Trigger.)

Lunar: Silver Star Story (Call it cheesy if you will, go ahead and slander the voiceovers, but the fact is that the story of the first Lunar was, and is, an incredibly touching and happiness inducing little story ^_^; The remake is everything that a remake should be: there's no massive 3-D overhaul, no new battle system inserted, it's just...Lunar, for the next generation ^^; It reminded me exactly why it was that I so adored the old one back in the day...)

Hmm.....

Xenogears - Even though the second disk was practically all story, it was still good story. I haven't played much games lately that equaled or even came close to the depth of story and character that that game provided. And what is console RPG but good stories (with battle systems, flashy graphics, and sound effects included ;) )?

Final Fantasy VI - Although I was pretty impressed with FFIV when I first played it, FFVI has got to be the first game I played that blew me away with it's graphics (for it's time), soundtrack, and story. I still get shivers whenever I think of the intro-credits to that game. That was the game that got me hooked into RPGs.

Chrono Trigger - What can I say? It was fun, and you got to finish it eleven different ways. And the Yasunori Mitsuda soundtrack didn't hurt either. :)

On a side note, I would have added Final Fantasy Tactics too, ...except I never got to finish it (when one chocobo wipes out your entire party, it's time to take a break). :(

Final Fantasy 6/3 (SNES) - It was the first RPG game that I've ever played. I really enjoyed playing Sabin and Terra along with the moving Figaro castle with music that I just can't get out of my head.

my favourite series would be the Gensou Suikoden series and Tales of (name) series.
individual gamewise...
- Breath of Fire III (my 1st rpg, leave a lasting impression with all the traditional elements of a rpg)
- Tales of Destiny (very much attached to its battle system and its characters, esp. Stahn and Leo)
- Genso Suikoden II (really sad and majestic story)

looking forward to Dragon Quest VIII (translated version) right now, and will they ever translate Dragon Quest V?

Just like many people I am a big fan of any rpg made by either square or enix before and after they joined together. Also Xenosaga even though namco seems to have the rights to the rest of the xeno series. My only prob with xenosaga is the gameplay. The story, gameplay and design is what makes Xenogears my all time favorite.

What the heck? Why are people listing turn based strategy games? (ie. Disgaea and Front Mission) Sure Disgaea's close, but not really. I suppose while I'm here I should post my list, eh? :p

1. Final Fantasy 7
2. Secret of Mana
3. Tales of Destiny
4. Final Fantasy 6/3 (whatever you want to call it)
5. Breath of Fire 1

And just for clarification (and so nobody beats me down) Disgaea and Front Mission 3 are both really good games, but they're not RPGs. :D

01-10-2005, 05:46 AM
well, even though they are strategy games, they have rpg elements as in turn based battle, different classes and leveling or upgrading.

actually you can argue wether there is a distinction between the two genres, they both orginate from D&D, turnbased battle is still used in rpgs today.

It's a tie between Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. However, if gameplay is the only basis (meaning minus plot), add Final Fantasy 8 and Grandia Extreme to the list -- (...we are all from the same orphanage......... the hell?!?) while the latter is basically a dungeon crawler with a third-grader's story submission for writing class.

Absolute favorite of all time: Phantasy Star 2. It was my first and sucked me in. Plus it was a scifi setting which is hard to find.
Second absolute favorite is Ultima VII... what other game allows you to make bread for a living? Even better was when I crashed the game by making too many loaves and selling it to the baker (made over 300 in one game-night).
Third favorite: Skies of Arcadia (DC). Loved the game!!!

Also liked Lunar series (only played PS1), Suikoden series, FFVI, & KOTOR.

Xenogears was excellent... for disc 1. Disc 2 went a bit south.

Disgaea is a fun game but sometimes it feels like work as I try to lvl up my characters and build strong items.

I have others, it's just that these ones I'm particularily fond of.

I think I'll go with Chrono Trigger on this one. I loved the story, battle system and how the game played out. For more strategy-orientated RPGs, I'll go with Disgaea. The game has massive amounts of replayability. FF Tactics runs a close second, which I thought was brilliant as well.

Xenogears and breath of fire : Dragon Quarter. Hmm, I think Final Fantasy 8 was really good too, but a lot of people I know have problems with it for some reason. Even they have to admit the music rocked though. A friend of mine used it when he got married and was coming down the aisle. He had a super religious family and they had no clue it was video game music, how often can you say that? The story for Xenogears was awesome and I loved the minigames. They managed to sneak in some hentai stuff in the game too, if you pay attention. Xenosaga was a bit of a let down if you ask me, too much dubbing and it felt mysteriously short. The card minigame was very good, but the others were sorta pointless. Breath of Fire is possibly the most moving game I've ever played, I love the fact they had the courage to keep the japanese dialogue and subtitle it. Perfect ending too, everything in the game just builts up to it, and it peaks exactly where it should. Very hard for a game to manage that actually. One of the few games with replay value for me, and I'm really picky.

Xenogears
FF VII
Castlevania: SOTN (you gained levels....*cough*)

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 2 (SoM 2) - Still my favorite games. They never get boring since the play style is so simliar to Zelda games, versus the rather monotonous battles in FF games. It's great these feature multi-player support too!

Planescape Torment - My favorite PC RPG, hands down. The story is unbeatable. I love the heck out of this game :)

FFIII/VI - My favorite FF game, I love the characters and storyline. The SNES cartridge beats the PSX version, no contest.

Fire Emblem (any) - The original tactical RPG, developed by Nintendo since NES days. Beats FFTactics and other similar games to a bloody pulp. The characters and story are always superb and the gameplay itself presents quite a challenge. I love love love love love it!

Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon - Insanely addictive yet simple games. I'm usually very relaxing when playing these, it's a nice change from beating up monsters all the time.

Zelda games (any and all) - I never get tired of playing these either, they're just classics. I still play Link to the Past on my SNES quite often. Ocarina was enchanting and I adored the art style and design of Wind Waker. Zelda games are always a joy to play. These aren't really RPGs but I had to throw it in :p

I realy like the battle system (dresspheres and such) from FFX-2, From ToS the Story and the art, though I'm realy fine whith the battle system to (wich suprised me, cause i though I would have some troubles with it) and disgea is my favorite strategy rpg.

dunno if that will change though, cause I haven't played La pucelle and phantom brave yet. and I stille haven't had a chance to play FFVII and FFVIII (yes, I am ashamed of myself, to still not have played the FF that most people think of as the best ever...)

I really enjoyed Grandia2 on DC, although it was a bit too easy. But the "fight engine " with this timebar was really cool. The real time fights in Tales of Symphonia were fun, too. And I really would like to play Disaea, but I don't have a PS2.

o man, tough one

1. Disgaea - because this is the first game that made me laughed really hard, cute and funny storyline XD

2. Final Fantasy 6 - because this was the game that got me into RPGs, the storyline was awesome back in the snes days

3. Secret of Mana - 2 players hack slash rpg, first time that a rpg was 2 players, i got tons of great memories of me and my friend hacking away. Before dynasty warriors 2 came out, this was the shit

4. Tales of Symphonia - besides the camera angles for players 2-4, this kicked ass, mulitplayers whooping ass like a 2D linear fighting game

5. Super Mario RPG - I was really impressed about this super mario game. Didn't expect this to be that good.

6. Final Fantasy Tactic - when this came out, there was no other game that was as unique as this one.

7. Chrono Trigger - Pretty much the same reasons why everyone else loved it. need I say more?

8. Final Fantasy 7 - besides tifa having big breast :D , the storyline was great

9. Kingdom Hearts - Awesome storyline and nicely done battle system

10. Grandia 2 - short, easy but i guess i was a sucker for the storyline
