I would say the Simpsons live in a state of denial, as they should have been cancelled ten years ago :p Seriously, even their halloween episodes haven't been anything but boring for a long time, it's all been downhill since Conan O'Brian stopped writing for them. Maybe this should be in the tv forum too, come to think of it... Anyway I should at least make a token attempt to answer your question. I kind of get a more central US vibe from them, like midwest.

Springfield Illinois is the only Springfield in America that has a nuclear power plant. So the obvious answer would be....?????

YAY! Finally a topic I know a little something about ^_^. I lived in Portland, Oregon for 10 years and my parents were good friends with Matt Greoning's parents. Guess what their names are .....Homer and Marge! They even kind of resembled the cartoon Homer and Marge. Homer Greoning played handball with my dad at the Multnomah Athletic Club. I also went to the same High School that Matt Greoning attended.
I think that when the Simpsons were created, they weren't meant to live anywhere in particular. There is a Springfield, Oregon, but I think the Springfield in the Simpsons is just meant to be a generic town.

Using ColDonut's map, we can limit the number of choices since there has to be a Shelbyville nearby. This is beyond me so I'm not even gonna take a stab at it.

Dang, my only family brush with fame is that Ted Bundy's in my dad's high school yearbook... I don't much care for the Simpsons any more, but Matt Greoning's "Life in Hell" books were cool.

That makes sense. I remember looking up springfield in an Atlas once (I wanted the GI Joe Springfield Cobra was headquartered in though) and there were tons of them all over the place. Probably helps from a marketing viewpoint if it's not nailed down to a particular state.

Probably helps from a marketing viewpoint if it's not nailed down to a particular state. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.
As far as a Shelbyville being around a Springfield, I don't think there are any Shelbyvilles that are located next to a Springfield in the US.

The springfield they live in changes.
In one episode their was only one bridge that went out of town because the whole town was surrounded by a moat like thing.
And in another episode, they live in the northwest with large pine forests and such.
And in another episode, their is a desert with mesas right outside of town.
So springfield isn't a real town, it changes. It's every town in america.

If you look at the clues througout the series, you may be able to figure it out. Certain episodes have omitted certain states (Ex. Florida, South Dakota, Arizona, North Dakota in the episode where the simpsons visit Florida and accidentally run over an alligator)

Two episodes lead me to believe that the simpsons springfield lies within a fictional state that doesn't actually exist.
1. In some episode at the end they state that the simpsons have been banned from entering every state but, if I remember right, Arizona and North Dakota. Now, I never cared enough to research far into that, but I don't think either of those states have a springfield.
2. In some episode where homer runs away to some place called West Springfield, Lisa holds up a map and says "But West springfield is twice the size of Texas." The only state bigger than Texas, as far as I know, is Alaska.
So if you look at these two episodes, the most logical solution is that the fictional Springfield in the world of The Simpsons exists in no real state.

Again Springfield Illinois, is the ONLY Springfiled in the US that HAS a nuclear power station. Hint: Homer works at a nuclear power station. So it would most likely be Illinois. Although it is probably anywhere USA.

According to the "Behind the Laughter" episode, it's revealed they live in Northern Kentucky >.>

(Coulda sworn it was Arkansas, stupid faulty memory)
Then again that's an episode from the newer seasons...
But yeah, Springfield is WHEREVER THE HELL THE WRITERS NEED IT TO BE FOR WHATEVER STORYLINE SETTING THEY WANT
Capslock is cruise control for cool

Oh yeah, I remember that episode! When they mentioned what state it was in I was so shocked I almost didn't believe it! :p (because I never expected them to give it away so suddenly like that! :D)
And yes, they've changed the town so many times it doesn't even make sense anymore! There was that one episode where they climbed a mountain right next to the town...since when was a mountain there??? Not to mention the fact that the Simpsons' own home keeps getting moved around. Remember the time it was right next to the power plant? :D But that's what I love about it...the writers don't even care! :p

Its kinda hard to pinpoint their exact location because Springfield has a gorge, a desert the size of Texas, has oil under one of the elementary school, has a lake/river that runs though it (remember the dam?). I figure Ohio or something :D
