View Full Version : Dead Or Alive Ultimate
Simply, the best 3D fighter to date.
It edges out Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution and totally kicks Tekken 4's ass in terms of gameplay and depth. I used to be a skeptic of the DOA franchise, but this game has changed all that. I play a lot of fighting games, ranging from old "King of Fighters" titles to the somewhat obscure "Rival School" series (no "Mortal Kombat"; they're horrible), but I haven't been this impressed with a new fighting game release for a long time.
DOA always had awesome graphics, but now it has the gameplay to back it up... and it looks more amazing than ever. The engine runs much smoother, the new environments are full of interactive components, and the online play is simply addicting. Also, the rumor has it that each character has over 20 costumes to unlock, which should keep many gamers occupied with single player mode (mmm... gym uniform Kasumi).
I could see myself playing this game almost everyday, even after "Halo 2" comes out. It's definitely a must-buy for all Xbox owners.

The only thing that I fear when playing the game is when I go online and start to hear people moaning... but besides that, very good game. DOA: Extreme Volleyball graphic engine and DOA3 fighting style. Can it get any better?
Most criticism I hear against DOA in general is that the commands are 'too simple'. Yea, sure. It definitely doesn't involve as much learning curve compared to... say, "Guilty Gear" (see my Dizzy avatar). But the fast paced accessibility is what makes DOA so appealing to the general public, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
But a experienced player will easily oust a button-masher any day. The key in DOA is to mix up the 80+ combo patterns for each character as much as possible, and know which one to pull out in certain situations (as the bulk of the gameplay centers around variety of counter attacks).

Fast? I've always felt as if the DOA series was quite a bit slower compared to games like Virtua Fighter and Soul Caliber. Then again, it's faster than Tekken, which is like what everyone is most familiar with, so I guess that's what you are referring to when you say "general public."
Orka, I too found VF4: Evo to be the #1 fighter on my list, so are you serious that this new DOA actually tops that? If so, I'm definately grabbing it.
Heh, boobies. :p

The great thing about any DOA game is being able to catch every punch and kick. That way you can school the button mashers by defeating them without ever actually being on the offense, its priceless. Kind of makes people feel rediculous after calling the controls too simple.

The comparsion of VF vs DOA IMO, is like complexity vs simplicity. I found DOA alot more simple to pick up than VF (especially VF3 & 4). The timing for moves is also alot tighter than DOA.
At the end of the day, whichever is better is really up to you and what you prefer. Although I'd say more people prefer DOA since it's simpler (and it has boobies :D )

Well I just tried out the demo on this demo cd and to be honest its a good game and there are many combo's in tag team play oh wow is it ever fun! Im planning to get the game for real now that ive got a taste of it.
Is it just me, or does the A.I. seem a lot smarter compared to previous releases?
Some characters are pretty tough to get past once you're at the "very difficult" level in story mode. Kasumi's teleports are driving me crazy (I wish I was good at using that move).
Anyhow, I've spent the past 2 days unlocking costumes... I have 15 for both Ayane and Kasumi now. :D

Or is it a completely new game?

as for me... no consoles, but I loved DOA3 so much I'm definitely gonna get this in iso form or something. And wait for CXBX to come out.
Isn't DOAU just a remake of DOA2 with online play?
Or is it a completely new game?
It's DOA 2 (plus Hitomi) rebuilt from ground up using DOAX engine. New moves, new arenas, new costumes, tons of unlockables... and online play, of course.

Oh yea...Without the girls...the game probably be nothing...
But since they are there...gotta love DOA :DOh c'mon, Hayabusa has enough cool to go around. In fact, that was the reason I bought the first game. I didn't know there would be so much promiscuous... ideas floating around in the game.
More to the point, the first game annoyed me because it seemed they were more intent on emphasizing the girls than the gameplay. I think two became a little more balanced, and I stopped following the series after that because it was just too simple and slow for my tastes.
My best memory of the game was mastering Ryu's upper-punch counter (gave you the least amount of time to execute the combo). You know, I was instinctively able to do the full "almost full circle+throw" followed by "full circle+throw" thing. My hands hurt trying to master it, but when I did, boy, was it rewarding. w00t.

Yea, that move is really cool. In DOAU, it can be used to shift from higher to lower plane... the damage is ridiculous.
My personal trump card is Ayane. I like how she can quickly switch between regular and back-facing attack positions in various ways (and she actually has bigger boobs than her sister Kasumi :D ).

i think its an ok game.. could be better.
tekken and vf is better. the wall game is on par with vf but tekken 4's wall game is better as they added the wall push. this game would be better if there were guaranteed stuff after stuns but as i play seems like you can still reverse someone if you are stunned and time right. overall i give it a 7. =)

I think that Virtua Fighter has always been a much better series. The fighters are much more distinct in Virtua Fighter and the control is far more precise. Dead or Alive isn't terrible, but I think it lacks compared to most popular 3D fighters like Tekken (pre-4) and Soul Calibur II . Except for Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat has always been just plain bad.

doa is probably better than mk tho.

but doa is still a decent game.
I can kinda see where you guys a re coming from, but you really shouldn't talk trash until you've actually played the game.
Like I said earlier, I used to think that VF4:Evo was the best 3D fighter too, but DOAU has totally turned the table on everything out there.

Am really looking forward to playing this, but since I live in the UK, I have to wait till April 2005
Can anyone explain why the hell we have to wait so long?
Another X-Box Live game ruined for people living in The Forgotten Realm...also known as Great Britain.
Anyway, off to GAME tomorrow to pick up a copy of Dead or Alive 3, especially seeing as a save file is needed to unlock Hitomi in Dead or Alive Ultimate.
At least I've got Halo 2, and Guilty Gear X Reloaded to keep me busy.
Wow... 5 more months. That gotta suck. It probably has more to do with tuning of Live element than the game itself. I hope the wait will be worth for you, though (Or you could just get the Japanese version. UK Xbox runs on region 2 format, right?).
Why do you have Kasumi as your avatar if you don't even own DOA3, though? Could it just have to do with... nvm :D

Yeah orka it does suck.
I don't have DOA 3, but I still have a copy of DOAXBV...got my avatar from a torrent of Kasumi Mania 3, just liked the picture so much, been looking for a decent one of Hitomi, but have had no luck, might try something with Photshop later.
As for getting a Japanese copy of the game, I may have to look into that one...thanks :)

I know DOA2U is DOA2 with the DOAX engine, but there're just two things I miss from DOA3 (aside from Christie and Brad): ground throws and air throws. I never realized exactly how dependent my Tina game was on air and ground throws until I started playing DOA2U. The minute I found out those didn't work, I had to find few ways of abusing Tina's launching ability.
Oh, and the counters are hard again. Go go, smaller window of opportunity!

Yea, it's weird... because there are some new moves, but there are also moves from DOA3 that's been taken away. I guess Team Ninja didn't really take the DOA3 move lists into consideration, and decided to work from those of DOA2. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since I personally like the fact that counters and throw combos took slightly more effort in DOA2 than DOA3. I also used to disable the combined button (p+k, P+f, etc.) feature in DOA3 to give harder time for my button mashing friends.
But I'm leaving the feature on for DOAU, seeing that I'll need as much edge as possible in playing online.

is it possible to reverse a reversal?
i know you can do it in tekken if you know its coming
but i dont know about doa...
The only way you can counter the counter ('hold') in doa is by performing a grab or throw of some kind.
Here's a little info, though: the counter system was originally introduced by DOA2. Tekken copied it.
txhav
11-02-2004, 01:09 PM
are you sure? tekken had it in tekken 3 and maybe tekken 2 which was out before doa 2. so the only way doa 2 was to have the counter system before tekken is if it came out before tekken 3, unless tekken 2 had it then it had to be out before tekken 2.

ok after a bit of researching, you are wrong.
according to this link http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/data/3607.html tekken 3 was released in '97
and according to this link http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/data/25813.html doa 2 was released in '99
and they are both arcade versions.
so.... now wat?
and further more research the counter system was already in tekken 2 which came out before the first doa :D
well anyways.... doa is still a decent game =)
ah, the embarrassment.
i dunno. i've read on multiple occassions that doa was the first to utilize counter for every single character. and it turns out that it was original doa, not 2, where the counter system was introduced in the series... which shows just how little i know about video game history. T_T
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/535/535283p1.html
then again, i don't have any solid basis on which game (tekken 2 or doa) hit the arcade first (says 1996 for both), so i could definitely be wrong. i guess none of it really matters much anymore.
txhav

it's just i still want to get pretty in depth with this game anyways.
but what i meant by reversing the counter is like in tekken if they counter you, you can escape it and do damage unto them.. but i guess doa doesn't have it.
cuz when i try to unlock costumes and play story mode, all the computer does is reversals and i get frustrated.

That's not really a fair question... Hitomi, Kasumi, Ayane... How could anybody make up their mind??
Ayane's overall + camouflage miniskirt outfit is pretty badass, though. It's my favorite in the game so far.
By the way, has anybody figured out ways to unlock costumes other than story mode? I know that each characters are able to gain 15 in story mode (five per 'easy', 'normal' and 'hard' difficulty), but I still haven't quite figured out how the time attack works. I think you gain a costume every time you rank in, but does difficulty setting change anything?
I haven't played the survivor mode yet, so I think I'll try that sometime tomorrow.

i have to say i agree with what was said about DOA, without the girls, the game would be nothing
sure, Hayabusa was cool....in Ninja Gaiden.....
DOA for me was kind of lacking, cause I mean 75% to a good 80% of the game relied on counter holds, making the fighting system too simple for my tastes
as for graphics, it depends on what you're looking at. Since DOA was very fast paced, limbs and bodies didn't have much precision to them, meaning that when looked at very closely arms would be going through torsos. Tekken got every inch of the human anatomy down, meaning that with every movement made, muscles would contract and limbs would not be passing through torsos, but the gameplay was rather slow. So IMO, both games sacrificed something for something.
im not going to be comparing VF cause I never really got around to playing that game.
as for Tekken being too slow, only Tekken 4 was too slow, Namco realized the complaints and have made Tekken 5 drastically faster and from what i hear, Tekken 5 might be based on Soul Calibur's A,B,K system, so i expect at least somewhere near SC2 speed.
but despite all that i have said, the DOA series is a refreshing series for the fighting genre. While not up to par with other games, it's still pretty good

I'm still unlocking stuff. I've played online with some friends but haven't played with the general public yet. You find you get a lot of lag playing against people in, say, Japan?
Online play is really fun... but it will suffer from a very slight lag unless you host them yourself. It might not seem obvious at first, but every command will take a extra split second or so longer to register on the screen than it would in offline play. Still, it's far better than any other online fighting experience that I've had with Xbox so far.

Well, as far as story mode goes, you can't unlock any costumes for a character in 'very hard' difficulty if you have unlocked every costume possible in the other three difficulties.

Actually, forget what I said above. I just unlocked the last swimsuit for Ayane with 'very hard' in story mode. I guess it depends with characters.

WOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you can play hard mode, for myself i can't play it because the enemy always counter me, BTW can you give me tips or hints for playing in hard mode?
i got myself tired even in normal mode
Here's a little tutorial I can give for beginners in "Dead Or Alive".
The biggest problem playing DOA, is that most commands are relatively simple. This often gives many people the false impression that they can cakewalk through the game by button-mashing. The truth is anything but. Button-mashing often result in exact same combos (which are often 3 or 4 hit barrage of simple middle punches and kicks), which the A.I. will easily dodge and counter once your'e past the "normal" level. Here are some important tips:
1) Take advantage of sparring mode. Practice a character or two, and memorize as many different combos as possible. Mixing up your moves is key in avoiding getting countered.
2) Don't always stand up with a kick after getting knocked down. The A.I. anticipates this, and will counter you more than half the time. Try to mix up your pattern.
3) Don't always be on the offensive. Best players in DOA are those that master the counter. Corner-trapping does not work in DOA.
Also, I will give you a guide to chaining combos in DOA. In DOA, there are five general types of combos (not including throws and counters). These are:
1) Combos that result in minor stun
2) Combos that result in major stun (the opponent will fall down if left untouched)
3) Combos that result in launch (the opponent will be airborn)
4) Combos that result in knockdown
5) Combos that result in knockback
Start with 1 or 2, then follow up with 3, then finish off the chain with 4 or 5. If executed seamlessly, it will register as a 5-9 (or even more, with creativity) hit combo, delivering considerable damage to the opponent. Each character has several variations of aforementioned five combos. To know which combos result in which effect, you must see it for yourself and learn through repeated practice. Each character has over 60 commands. The more you know, the better player you will be.
I hope that helps a bit. :)

BUT doa ultimate engine is different, you hit the button weak or mid or strong, my leifang can't combo because leifang mid hit punch is blow attack.
I said 'middle', not 'medium'. I was talking about the height of the attack... And use exercise in sparring mode, like I said. "-_-

does anyone know why i can't unlock custome even i already change difficulty?
i just got this game so i want unlock the secret.
you want to make the story mode settings to be default, (time, # of rounds, health etc.) and just change the difficulty. it took me forever to figure this out.. since i was tweaking it to make hte game go faster, but no costumes the first few times through. i wasted couplea hours doing that.. X(
you can use time attack mode to unlock costumes also. for all charas, and is the only way to get costumes for 3 unlockable charas. again, leave the settings as default, and change just the difficulty. no need to worry about how fast you finish either.
from various faqs i read, costumes 3-7 can be unlocked by beating in easy, 8-14 in normal, and 15-20 in hard* (if applicable, like Katsumi and Ayane.) guys don't have too many costumes..
i play this game way better when i'm not really thinking about what moves to do. that's how i unlocked all of katsumi and ayane.. now i'm working on lei fang, but halo 2 happened..
so do you have to have a doa3 save file to unlock hitomi? i had one, so it wasn't a biggie, but i just wanted to confirm the rumor.

Hard isn't that hard, but the AI did improve a lot over doa3 ... it's more difficult to counter the cpu to death anymore. Keep working on those counters, and know where each chara's combo strings start with (high, mid, low, etc). For ex. a lot of Ayane's stuff starts high, and Hayabusa tends to be a "mid" guy.

can anyone please tell me how i use booster disk for DOA3 ?Have a DOA3 save on your XBox. Pop in the booster disc, click on the thing that has Booster on it in the main menu. Then just go to "unlock all" (or something like that) and the disc will do the rest. That's really all there is too it. You can now go back to playing your regular DOA3 game with the booster features added to it.
Keep in mind that the booster disc only has a few extra costumes: nothing else.
I've got 10 of her 20 costumes unlocked, and I fear having to go into Hard mode for the last few.Someone told me that if you collect all the little items in Survival mode, you unlock everything in the game just like that. First you have to unlock everythin on the first page, then you get a medal, which in turn unlocks the next page of items, and, after you get all of those, everything should be unlocked.
It would make more sense than him actually one-by-one unlocking EVERYTHING over just the weekend.
OK... I've finally had some time to get some serious playing done in single player this Thanksgiving. I believe I've unlocked every single costume in the game (even for people like Gen Fu and Lei Feng, who I hardly use), except for a couple for Hitomi.

I can't believe u guys got DOAU already. Still playing DOAX here, yes it's true. I'am one of those fans, that only starts playing the next game in the series untill the old one is finished. And noooo i still have to collect so many swimsuits.. :(
Yea, it's a shocker... but I'm missing the gym uniform and the full bikini outfit. Any tips, folks?
Oh my God!.. Even thinking about that gym uniform makes me drool ** ^0^. Hitomi's body was so hot in DOAX. It should be forbidden to use that one, seriously. I do hope Tina get's some beter outfits, because the outfits in DOA3 where baaaaaaaaad.

Just to bring up to date what said in page 4 with my humble contribution: in my memory, the counter system in a 3D fighting game dates back to the first Virtua Fighter (the first 3D martial arts game ever). There were Pai and Akira (and Dural...) that can reverse a move...
The reversal of a reversal was introduced by Tekken Tag, with the "chicken"-called system; that's only an escape of a counter, though. The only "pure" reversal of a reversal (a damaging counter, not simply an escaping move: that's what i mean ;)) i know at present is in Virtua Fighter Evolution, and is Pai Chan's [i]Honshin rasen ansh

I don't have DOAU yet :( . But when it comes out, i foresee hours of drooling over the girls, lots of fun and active gameplay. I have peeked some screenshots and can't wait. The costumes are wonderfull. It's hard for me to realize Ayane in .. never mind. Drools. I do hope that Tecmo does not tell too much in DOAU. ~**DOA is my favourite fighting game.**~

I've just spent the last 3 hours on live getting stomped all over the place. But damn it's still a awesome game. I forgot how much fun it can be to play against other people.
For those living in the U.S., Best Buy will drop the price to $29.99 tomorrow, so this will be a good time to buy it if you don't already own the game.

Well, DOAU finally has a release date over here, Feb 18th...can't wait.

wow ... living in US has its geographic advantage ... I had this game way back in November 2004... damn, I would've liked that Kasumi pillow tho (which only the Japanese got I believe). ... anyways its a very wise investment my friend one that you will definitely not regret ... have fun playing, I guess we won't be seeing too much of you around the forums now that you've got the game ;) ... btw, it'll take you around 100 hours to unlock everything!
Did any of you guys in the U.S. or Japan encounter the "mystery players" from Team Ninja??
If I remember correctly, the deal was that if you were able to beat one of them on first try, you were qualified for a DOA national tournament... which determined contestants for the international tournament.
Too bad that I haven't been playing this game as much lately. :/
I was thinking about crossing back to the 3D arena for a couple of months (my heart is still in GG and KOF), but now that I have "Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower" for the PSP that's probably unlikely. T_T

DOAU is pretty similar to DOA3. The computers better, the levels look even better, and more costumes, but that's about it. Most combo strings in DOA3 will work in DOAU.
PS. you also need a DOA3 save on your XBox to unlock Hitomi for DOAU.

DOAU is basically DOA2 with DOA3 AI. DOAU still uses DOA2's movelists (except for Hitomi). I was surprised when Ayane's P P P K combo didn't work and I see a brand new move.
I'm not too sure about DOA2's movelist but I heard some moves from DOA3 is adjusted. Jann Lee's ultimate kick of doom ( > > P) was removed. Bass' ultimate 2-hit of uberfloating ( > P K) was also removed. Bayman's rolling STF of doom is also not there. Balance? Yeah, I think so. Those moves are soooo sick in DOA3 :P. Oh and countering is also harder and different.

Man, that sucks! That means if I decide to retire my Xbox and get a Xbox360, I would have to redo all that crap. Has there been any cheats for this game yet? Its been out long enough for single player cheats by now...
BTW what's the fastest way to unlock per item in DOA2U? Anyone know?

On my DOA 3 save I have Ein unlocked maybe that's the problem. Do you have Ein unlocked in DOA 3? Or maybe you changed something in the settings in DOAU?
Clear story mode on normal with Ein and have a DOA3 or DOAXBV save to unlock Hitomi. (This is what people say.)

Leon for the power hitomi for the combos and speed.
but whats with the story in DOA? yet every fighting game have a weak storyline but i have no idea what the story = to. Why this? why that? What the hells your problem leon let it go man, and stuff like that.
Great graphics, simple system with no complex wierd stuff, and real fighting styles with motion actors :)

DOAU is probably my favorite fighting game of all time. From what I hear, SCII is it's biggest competetor, but I haven't played enough of it to make a judgement. Anyways, I love the fighting, the counter system makes it very interesting, and the graphics are just incredible. Easily the best of any console game.
Oh, and as for the story in the game. Apparently DOA4's story is actually quite in-depth and well thought out. There's also some pretty crazy cut scenes. Hopefully it's not stupid.
