okay saying "be goth if your gonna wear a headband" is pretty dumb
wearing Cosplay items in public is saying "hey am sooo otaku, so ill partly cosplay since otakus do that!"....IMO
usually anyone that weared a naruto headband in my school or in the mall i usually flame them down since most of them are sterotypes (you seen them, ive got a bunch of them here -_-)
it just pisses me off when they say ther're otaku just because they have a small peice of cosplay on them... you can wear it no problem in public...but

i would never cosplay because
A. I probably dont have the full set of clothing
B. Not at a expo
(i have more things to say so ill re-edit this after your responds)

Edit at 628
- Well I guess your just worried about the "Goth" part them, your mom probably havent seen or heard of Naruto or probably any other kind of anime...
thats how Parents are, since some parent (well mine) think stereotypicly about other people's appearance....like one example i had you see a guy wearing all Camo, my mom would probably say hes from the army... i would think he shops at a store near by....

I have read similar responses like this on other forums, including some interesting theories that stores like Hot Topic is trying to make Otaku-ism a fad.

Would I call myself an Otaku at heart, not really. I don't try to be a poser. I really like anime and enjoy analyzing it but I do not devote my whole heart and soul into it. I'm more of a hardcore gamer/partial otaku/computer nerd, any one that knows me can attest to this. I enjoyed wearing the headband regardless of what other people thought and worrying about other peoples reactions seemed to be a non issue, but as I listened to my Mom's reaction it made me think a little and I wanted more feedback.

O_O holy ****.... are you crazy, I'm not gonna like attack you or anything, but I do need to slap some sense into you. DO NOT WEAR THAT **** IN PUBLIC. I mean, I would maybe wear one that actually looks okay,,,, maybe in a supermarket, or maybe in the vehicle, but NEVER to my college campus, NOR the mall. I mean, those are the place u pick up girls, and I don’t mean to hurt your feelings or bust your self of steam or anything, but dude, the headband is not gonna help you pick up chicks.
Btw, I this was all stuff I was going to write after reading the first post, I’m NOT saying this based on your pic alone.

I seriously doubt I'll ever do cosplay. But, I wouldn't put down anyone doing it, unless they look horrible, like this one jackass who wears Edward's overcoat from FMA with torn jeans, white Nike's, and get this one -- a yellow shirt, it's always yellow...

if the headband looks cool, it's ok since most people don't know it's from anime anyway. But that one you are wearing is not going to cut it.
i saw an Asian gal in college library wearing the Eva hair accessories thingy is pertty cute.

Bauh, I have a friend who has two he wears them at school but then you have the others who go and buy it and dont even know what it is. Personaly I HATE hot topic cause of all the posers and the fact that I can go to almost any hot topic and quiz the stuffing out of a employee. I just have one view on this all you need is knowlage of anime and magna to love it/be a otaku.

Hmm, not so bad really. I've seen people wearing headbands and nekomimi around town so not the end of the world by any means. Probably my only objection would be over getting associated with the naruto anime after all the awful filler... Just say you're a fan of the manga ;)

I have students who wear that on campus and sometimes I see those headbands on their bags. I just say to them "from what squad are you from"?

....

Some practical info for you...

To start with... Many, and I do mean many 5-25+ (on some days) people have one on there foreheads most days at BGSU. (Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green OH). Granted, most of them are in the "Anime Club" or at least hang out at the arcade in the student union. In addition, in A2 (Ann Arbor, MI) you can find people about town with them on. Most of the time you will find them in the local anime/manga store (WizzyWig [a most go to even if you live 100miles away{Message me for info on more places to go to}]) or at the big arcade.

Now does it look silly.
Maybe, but if you like it, then F*ck every one else. But don't be cocky about it.

Moving on...
The "goth" commint. Welcome to the theory.
You got it at Hot Toppic, with-in it's self that means "goth" to most people. They see the dark outside of the store, and call it "goth" or sometimes even "punk" but the fact of the matter is most "goths" get little or nothing at the store any more, mostly because it's over priced and low quality. That, and the bondage pants haven't change much over the last 4 years outside of becoming more "goddy." On the other hand n00bs to the whatever local goth scene will come with a full outfit from HT. After they get past the whole "I'm more gother then thou" thing or just stop going, they wont care that much. After all, goth, punk, and even this. Is not about what you have on, but about the community, and relationships that delveop.

Personally I like some things in anime / manga / games and make the outfits from them and were them out and about. People who care to say something, most of the time tell me how cute I look with the stuff on. When I'm not "cosplay'n" I might look more "goth" or even "punk". But guess what kids, I have stuff from A&F, A&E, and so on. Hell right now I have on, big black boots, tight blue Jens from A&E, an altered "I heart ipod's" t-****, with a black SG hoddie on. And my hair right now is pink. So in stereotypes would that make me a "gothic-preepy-sluty-freak chick"? (sluty because of the SG Hoddie)

To put it all in some sort of conitive prospective...

Here are some things my boyfriend has said to other's about topics simmuler to this... (He holds a degree in Physcology focus in sexuality and social interaction.)

"looks are not all that they are cracked up to be. Goths in this town are seen as dark, sneaky, doing drugs, whorsiping the delve, and un egucated. But when you stop looking at the 8" spikes, black clothes, and "crow" make-up. You see that they are in fact some of the most intellgent people in town, most of the goth night go's are students of scince, history, and art. One day they will be zoologists, doctors, scolers, archeologists, and unpaid artist. Granted some will be dead by 30, because of many things.
---
If you want to know the trick to be'n yourself and be'n popular. It's less of what you look like. But more of who you are. How you talk, and interact with people. You would be suprised how many people you can run into at the [coffee shop] that have some of the same intrest as you. If your confident in yourself then you can talk to people. Not just the ones in your trusted social clicks."

In a nut-shell...
If you like it, you dont need our thoughts on it. You already know what you want to do, your more then likely looking for people to tell you it's ok or not, to conform the thought you have.

Hahaha, I saw a middle-aged woman at the movie theater the other day (went to see Slither) and she wearing a Naruto headband.
I think her kids put her up to it.

I'd never do something like that in public. At a con, sure, but I don't make it a point to let people know I'm a nerd unless I'm around other nerds.

I really dont know about the naruto headband, but I'll sure wanna try the same headband as sol-badguy

shonan
04-20-2006, 05:53 AM
Hmm...
Maybe, it might turn out to be a fad. But at this point when I look at others with the headband, they look jacked up wierd. The only exceptions are: 1. fexpo/convention, 2. Anime Clubs at school. 3. Doing Skits or Naruto or some type of ninja related stuff. 4. Home use. 5. Tease some grade school kids. and so forth.
That head band is a huge attention grabber. I've seen some girls at my college dress up with purple wig with a purple sailor outfit and at that day when i saw that, there were no cameras taking pictures of her plus, people were laughing. I wasn't laughing, but was thinking WTF in the world would they go that far just to be the only one in school cosplaying. It is out of the norm. If we are so obsessed about it, we could wait so that it could be fad.
I could understand gradeschool kids to wear that or maybe middle schoolers. But cosplaying at a highschool to college levels is quite out of the spectrum here. Monkeysee monkeydo for example, Ipods. Bluetooth. those are the fads right now. Even if i dont have an ipod my people think my mp3 player is an ipod; the fad is strong. IF it was the head band peopel are like wtf is that and laugh about it, make remarks and such. Another fad I notice is Gameboys playing pokemon. I walk aroudn campus and find that people are trading pokemon on their free time. I find that really remarkable having almost and eighth of the school campus playing pokemon. Get in the action while it's still hot.
"Oh you got one too? Yea i got the sand and the konoha bands im collecting them all. Say do you know bob has this rare sasuke looking scratch headband?" That's where you join in the fun.

I would where one in public if
1. It was an actual head protector. You know... Well made with REAL and thick metal.
2. It had my own little sybol on the front, mainly my F13 one.
3. If the cloth was black and also long in the back.

Yep. And if no one likes it... So what? It would look stylish with my pimp trench coat, black cap, steal toe boots, fingerless gloves, my dog tag, and a net top underneath. All Black. Oh, I'm kind of a goth so... It is fitting for me to stand out, but I try and look good when doing so just like my buddy here :kakashi:

And I'm not doing it because it was worn by :kakashi: but because I like to look good while I deffy others sence of style... To not look like every other person there is out there. Dare you shun me because I like to look different? Then I shun you for looking like 34 other people I have seen in my life.

Well... If you want some accessory or stuff from Naruto ... Go for that silver Konoha Necklace. My Friend has it and it looks cool on him. IMO it will sound like "show a little otakuness wearing those small stuff". You can also go for Naruto T-shirts , bagz etc. As for the forehead protector, I would suggest u to wrap it around your bag or something. It's not that its funny your wearing that forehead protector, It's odd wearing that to a mall where your the only one that's differing from the face look

I'm gunna have to agree with your mom on this one, What the f'uck is wrong with kids these days trying to act like a ninja from a cartoon, seriously cosplaying nerds who have no sense of reality should be put in mental institutions I'm not directing this at you just I've met some pretty low life ppl who think they're actual ninjas and this fat girl trying to act schoolgirlish u know?

an "okay" accessory to wear maybe something like....
a. necklace ex: squall's griever
b. earing ex: find urself....
c. wristband....

in short.... anything not too flashy. if u wear something too showy, u just gonna lose ur own face.

100% agree.
i would go for that. cause it's not overly obtrusive and hell, it sounds cute to me. the key word is unobtrusive. your headband is pretty big and bold. if you're looking to stand out, you got it, big time. but probably not in a good way. on the other hand, the eva hair accessories stand out, small time, in what is likely a good way.

I do not feel it's a question of "Should I wear a Naruto headband in public?" But rather, "If I wear it, do I look good?" If you look good in it, by all means, go ahead. If you look like a dork, don't. Just... don't.

It's all good to say "Well, don't care about what others think". It sounds good in theory, but who really walk out of the house looking like something the sewers rejected? We all want to look good, no sane person purposely dress to get laughed at (unless he happens to be a clown).

I would suggest a smaller headband. One that says "Naruto fans are cool".

I recently bought a Naruto Headband from Hot Topic (Yes, I know the American model is crap but I lack the ability to import at the moment...) and I was wearing it around the mall for fun.

I come home and my Mom made one of the most ignorant comments I have ever heard.

"If you want to walk around getting strange looks from that headband, maybe you should just become a Goth..."

My first response was what the hell, but I decided to get some feedback from the gracious people on Hongfire. My question is this;
"What is your stance on wearing cosplay items, such as the headband, in public?"

I'm probably going to wear the headband in public regardless, but the validity of my Mom's comment sparked some curiosity. Any "constructive" feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.:kakashi:

Kitsune87

If I saw someone in my school or some other general place wear bought naruto accessory I would point my finger and laugh.
No offence but its just to mutch for me. Cosplayers who make their clothes themself have my full support.
Actually I saw in NY two girls (I really should not have to point out that they where asian :neko:) who cosplayed as some Harry Potter character. Maybe that girl who always hangs aroud potter. Hermione that was her name.
Anyway my point was that I thought that was ok but I dont know. I just cant se Naruto accessories without it tickeling my smile button.

It also depends on your personality...

Theres this guy at my club, he's like some crazy guy

These head bands may be great for conventions and private parties, but it'll just draw the wrong type of attention to wear it in public under any other circumstances.

I wear it when I'm with my friends, Just for shits and giggles. I don't give a care if we're in public... And it doesn't seem anyone around us cares either. I don't obsess over it though... I've never even been to a convention. I dunno, Guess it depends "what you want people to think". I don't really care what they think, Myself.

Only people who doesn't understand anime and little kids wears them
its very under standable how little kids wears them
but if the guy is older than 12 (year 7 or middle school 2nd year) and wears it, that guy has A LOT of catching up to do.

Your mom's arguement with gothics was applied to the fact that both gothics
and that headband of yours attention whore like hell. I'd say don't wear it because
it makes you look like a stupid anime junkie begging for attention... but, you're
free to choose for yourself.

I've worn headbands in public before, just not usually on my head. And I've never claimed to be an otaku or that I was cosplaying. I'll admit that I'm just a narutard, so I leave it at that.

I just wear them (usually on my arm) because I like the show. No different from people wearing band shirts or clothes from their favorite rapper's company, just a little more radical I suppose.

I've worn headbands in public before, just not usually on my head. And I've never claimed to be an otaku or that I was cosplaying. I'll admit that I'm just a narutard, so I leave it at that.

I just wear them (usually on my arm) because I like the show. No different from people wearing band shirts or clothes from their favorite rapper's company, just a little more radical I suppose.

...ofcause ur not an otaku, otakus doesn't wear something lame like a Naruto headband.
Like I said before somewhere, if you like/love Naruto ur not an otaku, you're just a person who likes anime.
(I'm not saying Naruto is lame, well the anime is. I'm just saying Naruto isn't an anime which a real otaku would watch/like)
But c'mon seriously. Wearing them in the public!? Don't you guys have any self esteem? XD

theres nothing wrong with wearing it....it just shows that you're a fan
i mean look at all those football exteme fans who color and draw all over themselves
people pretty much accept it because alot of people do it..
anime on the otherhand, is a minority so it isnt accepted as well

If we were allowed glass bottles, I'd be using those as my weapons of choice.

I'm just so glad I don't see people wearing cosplay items on the street... or at all. But I just feel so ashamed to hear people wear them in public as regular accessories wherever you guys live... No, not that I don't like anime but... you can't be the character, you won't be the character, so don't try to be. Or don't dress up like them unless I guess you're making a show or something but still! It's annoying and stupid to see people do that, makes me think that anime should never have left asia. That way at least we don't have to see posers everywhere in the globe.

Well, yeah, I'd say to whoever wears cosplay accessories in public... don't do it but heck don't listen to me, do what you like.

XD yeah sorry I don't mean to be rude to anyone but personally I just can't stand people that do that. Sure, I've seen like once a girl that wore something SIMILAR and it looked nice but... it would be pretty ugly on anyone else.

If the cosplay gear looks good on you wear it if not wear it on occasion for a laugh around the mall or something. To tell the thruth most people don't notice or seem to care, but those that do occasionally give a funny reaction

Its lame STOP IT..your not going anywhere looking like a clown in public your only embarrasing yourself and soiling the name of good anime..Sorry to quote something so old (and perhaps resolved).

I'm thinking. Who's to stop me from dressing up like a girl? And who says it's "dressing like a girl" in the first place? I mean, look at Malice Mizer. They gave me perspective. I was at first thinking to myself that they were wearing girls' clothes, but then it hit me, I'm only referring to them as girls' clothes because that's what I'm used to.

As for the headband. Well, don't be a Narutard. It strikes me as odd that anyone would want to express their Naruto fandom in public. Especially when it's something that shallow. Unless you have some sort of aspirations in becoming a ninja, don't do it.

I won't be surprised if one day they will like an army of Jologs wearing them in malls or in any Public Places and acting like one too...

You usually see them nowadays in a group where one or two of them are wearing the headbands and acting cool and sometimes looks like they want to pick a fight with you when you suddenly glanced at them and they think you're looking at them funny.

They usually hang out by :

- Malls especially those without tight security.
- Usually by "Kantos" their group can easily be spotted.
- Sometimes they hang out on the way to the mall or on the walkways
- Arcades (Especially TIMEZONE).
- Tom's World

And of course the place I mostly see them is inside Anime Shops buying more Naruto gears (Including those plastic Ninja Knives or something like that)...

The Anime Shop/Store you can mostly saee them is Comic Alley...

I really don't see why some people go on some sort of trip that it's uncool.

This is the way I look at it... chances are most people won't know what it is anyways (unfamiliar with the anime or simply don't watch anime) and may even think it looks cool (I think it can look alright if done properly / it isn't a cheap product). While on the other hand the people that DO know of it well, now you have something in common; a little conversation starter piece.

Some people go a little too far and start acting out things, though. While other people are lame no matter what they wear.

Actually, a lot of people would be embarrassed to wear the Naruto headband in public. It's true people will look at you strange, but that's about it. They may think you are strange too, but what the hell does their opinion of you matter? Unless you wear it in school classrooms, that might be a different story. I'd say it's a form of free speech and it takes some courage to be able to wear it in public, especially on the train or the bus. It just may be one of those things the general public are not used to yet.

I don't wear fanboyish stuff like that but really what's the harm if people wear it? Why are we judging them by wearing such things? Why are we being bothered when we see people walking around wearing those stuff? Personally I could careless as long as they are not being a nuisance. Certainly the majority who wear those headbands must know how to act in a civil manner. Their fashion trend might seem strange but atleast we don't hear any cult fanboys/girls causing trouble in the name of their beloved anime/manga.

If it looks good, wear it. If it looks bad. . . pawn it off on a relative.

these rules apply to all fashion in my opinion. Another good tip is to not let your mother have a say in what you wear. Ever.

As another side note: trends get started by people doing new things and others imitating, so don't be afraid of something new.

Haha, i agree with above post

And to silencehoney, I find something very wrong with acceptance. See, when a girl does something cool and wacky, like for example, wear a naruto headband XD, it's accepted by people, because, OBVIOUSLY, ITS A GIRL, SO, DUHH, ITS AUTOMATICALLY COOL. But when a guy does it, it's frowned upon. See I have this concept that guys(and girls) have this opinion that is biased towards women, to be specific, pretty women. What do you think?

Do whatever makes ya happy. But be warned that people will always look down on something they feel is abnormal. If you're doing it for the lulz then go all out.

I've worn some weird stuff to school before just to provoke reactions from people. I've also been followed in a store because I had a pink scarf with pom poms attached to it. It's quite funny to do these things so you can later laugh at the people sticking to the social norm like blue footed boobys.

Then again I was in drama club so it was expected of us to be on the far out side. :P

What a big irony, remembering how american who massacred and mass rape Japanese by killed over 500.000 innocent Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki using nukes, killed over 100.000 innocent Japanese in Tokyo using napalm bomb, mass rape and killed over 20.000 Japanese in Okinawa, mass rape and killed over 3.200 Japanese in Kyoto, etc. So there will be no reason for Japanese to hate my peoples especially me.

Do you want the score of the Japanese army during WWII over the Korean and Chinese population to STFU?

Dude, you're a serious douche bag!

Edit: I'll just quote R.J. Rummel, professor at university of Hawaii. Maybe you'll learn something:

From the invasion of China in 1937 to the end of World War II, the Japanese military regime murdered near 3,000,000 to over 10,000,000 people, most probably almost 6,000,000 Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos, and Indochinese, among others, including Western prisoners of war. This democide was due to a morally bankrupt political and military strategy, military expediency and custom, and national culture (such as the view that those enemy soldiers who surrender while still able to resist were criminals)

I wore it everyday to school for a whole year.

Oh interesting.
Also 2 years ago, I weared it always when I went outside, but since Naruto begun to run in German TV, was it bad, then everyone knows Naruto when it comes on the German TV nya.
When they Naruto showed normal Japanese and uncensored, would that be okay, but it was too censored and something, that Naruto by us is just more for childrens and so I don't have fun anymore with it.
Today when I go outside, I have Unagi on my shoulder. Popotan would never exist in Germany nya. Because this, Unagi forever.^^
