Unlike MP3, WAV, and other digital audio files, MIDI files don't really contain recorded music. Instead, the music is stored as a series of numbers which tells a synthesizer how the music is to be played back. Yes, a MIDI file must be played on a synthesizer. You may not know it, but the sound card in your computer also contains a MIDI synthesizer.
MIDI files aren't recorded, they are "sequenced." Most MIDI files are made by a musician playing on a synthesizer keyboard. Each instrument must be entered separately, but since MIDI can have multiple tracks, the resulting sequence sounds like the instruments are all playing simultaneously.
The fact that MIDI sequences must be created one instrument at a time prevents almost all digital audio files from being converted. There are several "pitch to MIDI" software programs such as WAV to MIDI Converter and Intelliscore that CAN convert a file to MIDI. The catch is that the audio file [most of the time has to be] of a solo instrument.
Finally, since MIDI must be played on a synthesizer, you can't record vocals or other sounds that are not available on the synthesizer. That's why you can't convert an MP3 file of a pop song to MIDI.

So basically you can't really convert an mp3 to MIDI unless the mp3 is or almost is uni-instrumental. Vocals don't turn out right either. As for how people actually make MIDIs, they usually use a program to input raw sheet music that outputs MIDIs. (Or they use a synthesizer or electronic keyboard.)
Hopefully that helps just a tiny bit,
Cheers, Venio
P.S. Good luck! XD

You can however 'convert' midi to mp3. This method is by recording the midi and save it under the mp3 format. (This is my own method btw). But who wants midi converted mp3 anyway?
You can try other methods
I think its work better if you convert a format with no voice (Only music).

Could anyone tell me the difference between the two MIDI formats GS and XG?

XG can produce a wider variety of sounds , about 2x as many as GS. This makes for better music and effects. XG supports more effects too. Ya might try this website:

Anyone know of any good program to convert mp3 to midi?
I have seen one program that could trans-code an audio stream into a midi but was every limited because of how complex the process is

As said before, it is impossible to convert a MP3 to a MIDI unless the MP3 is of a
single instrument. The sophistication of the conversion software does not
matter. It is simply a result of the mono frequency based nature of the MIDI format.

And even if the song's only making use of a single instrument, the converted MIDI sounds crappy, as the programs add lots of background noises that are totally way off. Useless for transcribing, unless you have a good idea how the song goes and painstakingly pick of the redundant bits

I'm actually interested in the MIDI to WAV process...is there any program that does this? I may need this for making processed music...
Doing it with a mic is no good, because of sound quality from ambience and background noise....
