How uh, risque can the requests in here be?

Suehirogari, a professional manga-ka that I'm obsessed with, has a monthly h-manga in Comic Megaplus. Well, in the most recent 2 chapters, the female teachers have started to attend school in the nude. The latest chapter has one of the students explaining it to a newer student (I think). I'm rather curious as to what all is going on, since I posted it in /e/ on 4chan and one of the replies was "Those are some of the best excuses for public nudity I've ever seen" -- but no explination as to what those excuses were. Argh! ;)

Taking the kanji literally, it would mean "Cannot be grasped", so I guess "out of stock" is a correct interpretation.

To answer the original question, so far in the japanese grammar book that I came across, none of them put "or" in particles chapter.

For your example:

Do you like apples 'or' oranges?

It can be:

あなたはりんごとオレンジではどちらが好きですか?

Anata wa ringo to orenji dewa dochira ga suki desuka?

Note that と here means "or". It depends on the context of the sentence you're dealing with.

Okay, both are different words. (But both usually go together...)
This is harder to explain then I expected.

じゃあ、ねえ・・・ is like saying, "Ok, then..."
So Tomoyo and Sakura are saying something like;
Tomoyo: "Ok, then... Sakura-chan..."
Tomoyo: "lets kiss"
Sakura: "whaat!"
Sakura: "I, I don't mind... bu, but"

Did you mean how to look for a kanji in a kanji dictionary?
Hi yes that's what I mean. Very hard kanji's sometimes I have a hard time trying to find a structure in a kanji to recognise it such as this 纐.

You must be able to recognise the most common/basic grapheme/character to be able to find a kanji. It means that you need to disassemble the kanji into basic particles.

For 至 , it consists of 一 , 厶 , and 土 . I'll look the kanji under 土 , and count the number of strokes (if the software such as Jim's Breen's WWWJDIC allows you to enter stroke counts). For book like Spahn Hadaminsky Kanji dictionary look under 土 for matching character.

As for 纐 , it consists of 糸 , 父 , 亠 , and 頁. So basically look for the first basic character in the dictionary, in this case, 糸 . Using Jim's Breen's WWWJDIC is easier since you just select the basic characters ( 糸 , 父 , 亠 , and 頁 ) with given stroke counts.

That's basically how to look for a kanji. You'll get use to it if you keep practising looking for kanjis.

But contextually, the second line is closer to something akin to "Here we exist". It's a rather poetic figure of speech, and not a conventional mode for everyday use.

these are mantra "真言" and have meaning,but i don't know.

i examined mantra a little.
mantra is used to ask buddha's help.this mantra is for Fudo Myo-o.
Fudo Myo-o is one of buddhas.written by Japanese as "不動明王"

My guess is that they do mean something. They're probably lines from Buddhist Sutras written in Katakana for phonetic purposes. Back when Japanese were importing Chinese characters from China, Buddhism was also passed on over. At the time, the Japanese islanders obviously didn't have enough understanding to read them in complete Chinese. So Katakana was made and accepted to aid in the readings. Nowadays though, it's used differently.

Chances are they're saying that "kokoro no chikai" = "sono negai". Second, "daite" is probably a command. Also, if mitai is in hiragana then kanjite mitai would be "Like I'm feeling", otherwise it might me "I want to try to feel". So here's what I think it is.

You maybe can remember (...or not), a few years ago, I was translating a really funny Japanese HRPG called Men at Work! 2 (e.go studio)...

I decided to proceed the work on it in order to release a full english translation (graphics included !!!).

The only problem is that a few files remain untranslated and I don't have the Japanese skill (lvl up !)...so I can't translate from txt file (I'm into the hack, graphics and managing stuff).

Yes, you have all the Kana right. As Pain said, the word with the small ゅ is the correct one for "goshujin". Kanji would be best (and would probably look cooler too if you're using it for sigs and the like ;) ) but Kana will get the meaning across :)

Just in case you're wondering how it works, whenever there is a small Kana, it usually modifies the syllable of the preceding Kana. In your case し 'shi' + the small ゅ 'yu' becomes しゅ 'shu'. Taking the 'sh' from 'shi' and the 'u' from 'yu'. If the ゅwas full sized however, it won't have that effect and would be しゆ 'shiyu'. Another example would be フィールド "fi-rudo". フ 'fu' is modified by the small ィ 'i' to become フィ 'fi'.

Was that exactly how it was stated in Japanese? because as far as I can tell, that's not a real word.

There's a possibility that it actually was 劣ってる　（おとってる）, meaning 'lacking' or 'lesser'. Another possibility I could see is お、飛んでる　（お、とんでる）, a phrase saying 'oh, it's flying'. I can think of several other possibilities, but I'm almost certain that you have mistaken おとんでる from some other word or phrase.

Please let us know what the exact source was. Did you read it, hear it, see it? And from what source? If I know that, I might be able to better help you.

As you may know, no is a particle in JP but in a lot of informal speech, it's a "softener". It's used to explain or put things lightly. e.g. A boy smashed a window and someone might say, Anata ga shita no?. Here they're asking the boy softly to sort things out instead of demanding to know if he did it or not.

In other cases, young children have a habit of using it in place of da as far as I know. A bit like how Sayounara, "farewell" is used improperly by young children.

Finally, in a lot of Anime/Manga they like adding some sounds to make characters sound cute :rolleyes:

As for ito, it means thread, string or yarn. Sometimes you may hear akai ito which refers to the story about the thread of fate in Asia and how it ties two lovers together.

There's no site that gives a complete list since there's between 5 to 10 thousand individual Japanese Kanji. More if you count the compounds but... I used to use Rikai.com a lot where you either paste in some text or a webpage and you will see the meanings, pronunciation of Kanji when you hover your mouse over them.

There's no real accurate translation program out there. Otherwise there would be no need for translators or this thread ;) Most people tend to use search engine services such as Babelfish for a very rough idea of what things mean, though.

On the bright side though, there are lots of good sites out there dedicated to translating JP to English. Just depends what you're after. Sites such as Animelyrics.com are well known for, well... translations of Anime song lyrics.

I suggest Japanese-Online.com if you want to start learning the language. That's where I started off.

They all actually come from the word 「痛い」 (Itai) which means "(It) hurts". The kanji itself means "pain" and can be put together with other words to describe the pain i.e. 「頭痛」 (The first kanji is head, so headache, which i have right now *grumble*)

But I gave too much useless information, hehe. To answer the original question, I sometimes say 「あたっ！」 (ata) ...but usually when it doesn't hurt that much (don't ask why, i just work that way) Maybe sometimes just 「たっ！」　when I'm lazy(?)

直人 is what i usually see for Naoto. I've seen numerous ways for naoko, and Kevin would be correct as ケヴィン. The ィ after the ヴ makes it a vi sound. I'm not sure exactly what you meant by "But I am not Japanese, so I don't need to use "ヴ"", but as far as my knowledge of Japanese goes, that's the only way to make a vi.

And....I don't understand your last question either. Sorry >.<

Well, officially there really is no "v" character in the Japanese language. It was added in later because of other languages. That's why you can only write it in katakana. Not hiragana.

Naoko is written as 直子. 子 (ko) means child so since there is no such word as naoko in the dictionary (i think) I guess it just literally translates as "nao child" but since there is no "nao" adjective in English, it adds an "of" for it to make sense, thus "child of nao". That's my guess. Where did you look that up? O.o

Well "nao" itself has no meaning. It is just how the kanji is read. The kanji (直), however, means directly, or straight, or something to that effect.

I now see where you got the "child of nao" thing from. This is rather difficult to explain because it's just how something is in Japanese. Most, if not all Japanese have meanings...but they do not always make sense, but are a meaning nonetheless. Like I said before, Naoko is just Nao Child, translated literally. It has no real meaning, but it's just where it comes from.

Take my last name for example, Taguchi. It is written 田口 the first kanji is something like a farm and the second means mouth. So it is the mouth of a farm. Doesn't make sense does it? But if I said that in Japan, they would go "ooh" (well, maybe just the old pplz, younger pplz woudln't give a crap).

Maybe if I took some time, I could explain it better but the best I can say for now is, it's just how it is. Another reason for this is because there are usually different ways to write the same name (in Kanji). My name wouldn't work because there's only 1 way, but if someone asked me how to write my name (assuming there were other ways), I could say "mouth of farm" and they would know what kanjis I use.

Since I never studied Japanese, I'm not sure what the "tenses" are, Sorry. Yaru is actually a wierd word because it's informal and the way it is sometimes used is awkward. I guess I can try writing some tenses with the translation is....but I have no clue what past perfect is :\

yaru - present, future informal(Japanese has no real distinction between present and future except by context)
yarimasu - present formal
yatta - past informal (yarimashita - formal)
yatteiru - present progressive
yatteita - past progressive informal (yatteimashita - formal)
yarou - order informal (formal - yarimashou)
yaranai - negative present (yarimasen - formal)
yaranakatta - negative past (yarimasen deshita - formal)
yatte - i've heard someone describe this as -te tense(?)
yareba - if
yareru - passive present positive informal
yarenai - passive present negative informal
yareta - passive past positive informal
yarenakatta - passive past negative informal

I think I should have organized this a little bit, I've confused myself with all the informal/formal stuff. I'll fix it up some when I have time tomorrow, too sleepy right now. If anyone can add, please do, I can't even remember what I put and didn't, so I'm sure it's missing a bunch.

Look under Verbs topic, in which basically there are 5 groups of verbs, which are:

五段活用 (godan katsuyou) 読む、行く、話す...
上一段活用 (kami ichidan katsuyou) 見る、着る、いる...
下一段活用 (shimo ichidan katsuyou) 寝る、受ける、生まれる...
カ行変格活用 (kagyou henkaku katsuyou) only 来る
サ行変格活用 (sagyou henkaku katsuyou) only する

under these groups there are 6 forms of the verbs for different type of conjugations:

未然形 mizenkei - e.g やらない、読まない、見ない、食べない、来(こ)ない、しない
連用形 ren'youkei - e.g. やります、読みます、見ます、食べます、来(き)ます、します
終止形 shūshikei - root form やる、読む、見る、食べる、来る、する
連体形 rentaikei - root form for noun attachment
仮定形 kateikei - e.g. やれば、読めば、見れば、食べれば、来(く)れば、すれば
命令形 meireikei - e.g. やれ、読め、見ろ、食べろ、来(こ)い、しろ

However, the list is not complete, since derivation from ren'youkei for formation of た／て and う/よう form is not included. The verbs formation are not simlilar to English, so I think it is better to learn the verb conjugation in Japanese way rather than finding Japanese equivalent of English verb forms.

By the way, to form て／た form, take the last letter in 連用形 ren'youkei for 五段活用 (godan katsuyou).

1. Words ending with き、ぎ --> い

歩き --> 歩いて／た
泳ぎ --> 泳いで／だ

2. Words ending with ち、り、い --> っ

待ち --> 待って／た
帰り --> 帰って／た
買い --> 買って／た

3. Words ending with に、び、み --> ん

死に --> 死んで／だ
呼び --> 呼んで／だ
飲み --> 飲んで／だ

No problem with other katsuyou, just add て／た the 連用形 ren'youkei.

For う／よう form:

1. 五段活用 (godan katsuyou)

It uses only う form. Change the ending from -u to -ou

やる --> やろう
歩く --> 歩こう
行く --> 行こう

2. 上一段活用 (kami ichidan katsuyou) and 下一段活用 (shimo ichidan katsuyou)

It uses よう form. Take 連用形 ren'youkei form and add よう

見る --> みます --> みよう
いる --> います --> いよう

食べる --> 食べます --> 食べよう
教える --> 教えます --> 教えよう

3. カ行変格活用 (kagyou henkaku katsuyou) and サ行変格活用 (sagyou henkaku katsuyou)

It uses よう form. Add よう to 未然形 mizenkei

来(こ)ない --> こよう
しない --> しよう

I put the て／た forms and う／よう forms in detail because some Japanese grammar tutorial like to omit that. while other verb conjugations are well explained.

I've seen one good guide to japanese grammar, which is very simple (not like the wikipedia one), Japanese Tutorial by Koji Hamamoto, which I used before reading some other bigger book, but seem to me that the guide is no more available online. I'll post link to some other sites which I think very good/simple at this verbs conjugation. ^^

Well "nao" itself has no meaning. It is just how the kanji is read. The kanji (直), however, means directly, or straight, or something to that effect.

I now see where you got the "child of nao" thing from. This is rather difficult to explain because it's just how something is in Japanese. Most, if not all Japanese have meanings...but they do not always make sense, but are a meaning nonetheless. Like I said before, Naoko is just Nao Child, translated literally. It has no real meaning, but it's just where it comes from.

Take my last name for example, Taguchi. It is written 田口 the first kanji is something like a farm and the second means mouth. So it is the mouth of a farm. Doesn't make sense does it? But if I said that in Japan, they would go "ooh" (well, maybe just the old pplz, younger pplz woudln't give a crap).

Maybe if I took some time, I could explain it better but the best I can say for now is, it's just how it is. Another reason for this is because there are usually different ways to write the same name (in Kanji). My name wouldn't work because there's only 1 way, but if someone asked me how to write my name (assuming there were other ways), I could say "mouth of farm" and they would know what kanjis I use.

strength:　強さ [tsuyosa] or 力 [chikara] （power and strength are pretty much the same thing） {Can also be 怪力[kairiki] meaning super muscle strength}
hate:　嫌い [kirai] {I think hate would be better as 憎しみ[nikushimi] kirai is more like dislike than hate unless it's 大嫌い[daikirai]}　
faith: 信頼 [shinrai] {信仰　[shinkou] for like religious faith. Shinrai is trust/reliance}

Those last 3, I don't know nor do I wanna know.

I guess it's sorta like "I take that back" but opposite. but moving on...)[you] get pulled out/away. Or, sometimes a tentacle(?) will appear. The name of "Legendary Duck" is not only a name[title].(I can't think of a better translation. Translators, help!)
If you win 5 consecutive times against Boss Monkey, you will receive the Consumption Type Skill "Super Amorousness"(The thing where he turns into a girl, I forgot what the subbers named it as, I watch RAWs now). If you win 5 consecutive times against tentacle(?), you will receive "Instant Nine Tails".
Boss Monkey will sometimes do strange movements/behaviors;if you press the △button, you can catch it cheating. If you press it when it is not cheating, you will be pulled out and your ore will be confiscated.

I really have no idea what the "pulled out" part means...is it some dungeon? O.o dunno...

Hmm, I've never throught about that one before....bluntly, I don't know. 「ガブ！」 (gabu) would be the sound when you bite something (at that moment)...Are you asking for when you bite? or when you are biting and have something in your mouth. 「ガルル」 (garuru) is the closest thing I can think of from the top of my head...but that's more like the sound a dog makes when it's angry or it's pulling on something with its mouth.

Some people make their passwords, and I know someone who got their name from their birthdate. However, 4 and 9 are considered unlucky numbers because they stand for し(death) and くるしむ(suffer).
