View Full Version : "Need seeders" list, box, or search criterion.

Hi,
May I suggest the need for a quick way to see what torrents
are in need of seeding? It takes a long time to search through
all the torrents to see what needs seeding that one has.
Since it is to everyones advantage to make seeding as easy
as possible, it would be nice to have an orphan (no seeders for
x amount of time) list or search criterion so that one could
get a quick list. It would be even better to have this on the
home page so that potential seeders could see it first thing
and be reminded.
Cheers,
Hiroshi

*agree*
This is a great idea in my opinion!
I'm always up to seeding a file...

Personally, I think it's stupid to seed if no one is going to download the file. I think the Request forums is good enough for people that are willing to seed. But maybe that's just me...
We also have an IRC channel on irc.rizon.net. That's another way to request stuff. :D

Hi,
Thanks for the comments. Let me clarify just a bit. While it
is possible to request a seed or look at the forums, it is an extra
step and I suspect most people don't think of it or bother (mea culpa).
But if a list hits them in the face (some of us need the old 2 x 4 to get
our attention) it is, I think, much more likely that someone will seed. Also
a problem with using the forums is to figure out which posts have already
been seeded - again, more steps = less seeding.
Cheers,
Hiroshi

At the risk of belaboring this (like I haven't already), I checked out
Chaotic Heaven's ideas:
When I asked on irc if I could request re-seeds
there, I was told why not use the forums. When I asked which forum
I was not answered (admittedly I didn't stay long so it is possible I
might have been answered later), so I left 3 requests there.
On looking at the request forums I find they are for requesting new
stuff and only members can make a new request.
On asking on support and help I was told to post on the torrent
thread of the torrent thread that needed reseeding. When I did this,
only the fact that a new post was entered appeared on the home page
and only for about 10 minutes.
Let me end this long (sorry about that) discourse by asking you: You
are a user who has downloaded several things. You hit the site to download
something else and while you are doing that to see if you can help with
seeding where necessary. What do YOU do to find the "where
necessary?"
Cheers, and thanks for reading,
Hiroshi

well.. its quite easy to see which needs seeding
i think u just have to go to torrents..
go by "all" and "date"
and click the UL category.. then it will show all the torrents that has the most seeds to the least
and click on the last page to see the dead torrents.. it may look confusing and a lot of work from what i just wrote
but its actually quite fast and easy.
and usually.. once a normal seeder has stopped seeding.. it means that that seeder is either downloading smth else or is seeding another torrent..
that way.. the best way to get a reseed is to ask the uploader him/herself...
i think this is the most efficient way...

I agree that there are people that can not stay in the forums and have problems with IRC, that could help seed. There needs to be a flag to say a long term seeder is wanted. I have had to purge several torrents and their associated media file because none of those seeding had 100% and Azureus showed less than 1.0 availability.

I guess what HereAtThere said is the best way to search for what torrents need to re-seed.
Or if you want to check the stats of your own torrents, just type : http://www.hongfire.com/forum/torrents.php?u=<your-user-number>
(Sounds kinda dumb, but that's how I check my torrents to see if they need seed :p)

Thank you all for the responses. I think we can safely
say that this suggestion is not one that is going
to win overwhelming support! :)
One thing I did notice is that there seem to be two views
of seeding. The uploaders seem to feel that they are
responsible for the long term seeding of their uploads.
(and I thank them for this since I benefit) But this seems
to go against the concept of bittorrent where the downloaders
are responsible for the continued support with each leecher at
least passing it on to the next person. Thus the whole concept
of long term seeding shouldn't be necessary (In the best
of all possible worlds). This leads to another suggestion: State
explicitly that it is expected that downloaders will stay connected
at least till their ratio is 1 (Or come back fairly soon to do so) and
further will check back over a period of a few weeks and reseed if
necessary.
Even with no enforcement most people want to help and like it
when there is a clear statement of their responsibilities.
Thanks again for the discussion, you are a great group of people!
