View Full Version : Ocean or Space?

This is a question that I've asked a lot of people, but don't remember the answer for. And is sorta inspired by the old X-Com game series.

Would you rather spend money exploring the great depths of the ocean or deep space/other planets?
And let's just say you have to choose one.

I rather go for the ocean, there's probably still lots of old artifacts and ocean life down there we don't know about...
It's probably easier and cheaper to rescue you if you get stuck down there somehow.

Go to this thread (http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74616) for some really nice deep sea video ^^

Ocean. I'd rather be able to see strange living creatures than suddenly bumped into little green men. No, I'm really dead serious.

Space, definitely. Afaik the universe is endless, the possibilities make me shiver when i think about it! imagine meeting a different race from another planet!

I mean, what we know and have recorded, we haven't had any extra terrestrials to visit us. Gah, great, now you got me thinking about all this stuff again. Bah! :D

Hi ^^
For me, we should explore our ocean first. People should learn to live underwater first before venture into deep space & other planet. The rough & unpredictable environment in the deep ocean is a good training ground for us to mentally & technologically prepare before a journey into the deep space. There still a lot of things & mystery need to be learned & understand about our ocean.

Either you die from too much pressure or having objects hurling around at thousands of miles an hour hit you.

Well, you can die of lack of air in either case. =\

So.... SP... OCEAN. =D

Well both options have the possibility of death by suffocation, which is one death I rather not experience. I'm also not a fan swimming, but I do like seafood....
Space is large with many planets and asteriod fields to explore. But hey the sea has it beautiful moments and can't pass up an oppotunity to get all the free seafood I could catch. It gotta be Ocean.

Exploring both the ocean and space come with their difficulties. The ocean is surprisingly challenging, maybe even more so than current/near future space exploration due to extreme pressures at the bottom of the deeper parts which basically prevent manned missions. Of course there are some planets with very high gravity too.

Hmm... both has their (dis)advantages whick make them kinda even so that's a tough choice for me.

Space does have more possibilities and it's the one being given the most priority at the moment, or so it seems to me. On the other hand, ocean seems to be a bit underrated so I think people should explore it some more.

But I wonder... humans are destroying this planet little by little. I don't have much hope that things will be much different for both ocean and space.

All in all, as zh4rx0 pointed out, it would be interesting if we tried ocean first but it's somewhat easier for me to picture ourselves going to space instead. Personally, I think I'd be fine with any of them but I'll go with space.

Although space exploration is something I am immensely interested in, right now I vote oceans. Most of those have never been explored so much more than a few feet below the waves. What is down there? Is it usable to us as either living space or alternative food supplies? What exotic minerals or medications might we harvest? What might we learn about past coastal civilizations? Cost wise I think the oceans are the best option and we do have technology allowing us almost "instant gratification" instead of waiting decades or longer just to possibily find something we can use or misuse.
Someday we might even geneticaly alter some of us to use the free oxygen in water and be able to handle the pressure, but we will never breath in a vacumn.

For me, it is the ocean. I mean, the ocean is almost like space, you've got an almost infinite amount very different species that habitat this place. The human race has only explored a very small portion of it, and for all intents and purposes it is another planet. I was watching this show called deep blue or something like that, (from the same people who did this amazing series called "Planet Earth") and it explored the deep ocean... the parts where literally no sunlight gets too... one of the most amazing things i saw was this denser part of the ocean, it had what sort of resembled a land mass made up anenimes and other such plants (that didn't require sunlight of coarse) floating on top, and when they found a hole they tried to go down it, but the water was so dense that they just bounced off it.... it was like another ocean in the ocean!! 0.0

It's a hard question. In the deep ocean it is guaranteed that we will see creatures we dont normally see and many other living things. In space travelling is too long it could be boring and we might not find anything living. It is hard because I love both but I think that I would choose space because we never know what we could find next and there is a lot of beautiful scenery. Space might be more boring but I choose it because I think that I will get more thrill of adventure and exploration and art.

I'm going with space. If we search the ocean, there is a chance the we might awaken some ancient monster that could quite possibly destroy humanity(i.e. the Cuthulu, megadon etc). At least there's a possibility that we could haul as from whoever we piss off.

dum200
10-11-2007, 05:28 AM
space because we need the reasources that is running out on earth and btw it is probably as hard to travel in deep sea and in space since there is huge pressure down there. The sea would be faster to travel to though ~

well i think if we explore space we may naver find another living being unless we can some how travel faster then light xD but who know maybe one day we would know how to artifically create worm holes~

Really? I remember a prof telling me we know more about the surface of the moon than the oceans...

But in my mind, we should do stuff that profit human society... and in the long-run, space is the way to go after we kill off this little planet of ours :D:p
Besides, space is actually be more profitable in terms of science development and for our economy (mineral/element harvesting and stuff). What long-term turn investment would we get from exploring the oceans?

Littledgn
10-11-2007, 08:27 PM
Space will probably naturally be more expensive than the Ocean and exploring the oceans just might give us new resources that we can't find at higher depths? I guess that's about it.

And who knows what sort of stuff have fallen down there, historically speaking.

Besides, most SciFi stories set plot on the amazingly big space. It will take an eternity to explore space with space probes, as sea can be explored by robots. Just to imagine where Voyager 1 is venturing now takes my dreams to a new level.

Ocean, because if there's a intelligent life forms out in space would you want to be responsible ruining their civilization.

Think of it, human kind has great pretental to better ourselves but in the end we only use it only when it's deemed necessary but we're mostly corrupt as a species.

Now if there really a intelligent life forms out in space I think they'll know better to keep away, far....far away from us!

In the near term, the ocean actually presents greater technological challenges than space, while offering wonderful opportunities to make space-influencing leaps in technology, techniques, and procedures, without some of the anticipated long-term health risks.

There's the expected loss of bone and muscle mass and density from being weightless for extended periods of time, which could lead to serious problems for initial space crews, in addition to 'cosmic rays', space object collision, anxiety and other emotional symptomology from long-term isolation... the expected list of medical risks to long-term spaceflight are already well in the process of being documented. Oceanic exploration would give a much better way to observe and learn to treat the emotional and mental disorders under more controllable conditions than the isolation of space, without throwing in all of the negative aspects of weightlessness at the same time. Not to mention the speculative risks of being exposed to non-terrestrial microbiology.

With the exception of radiation and far more extreme cold, space is comparatively SIMPLE!

No, Seriously! Except in the combustion chambers and pressurized fuel and service lines, the greatest normal differential in pressure between the occupied portions of a spacecraft and the vacuum outside is 14.7 pounds per square inch. Underwater, you can surpass that pressure differential ... I forget the actual number, but it's well within a hundred feet of the surface, and it only gets more intense the deeper you go. Dealing with these sorts of structural challenges will teach us how to build large, structurally sound items that can withstand great deals of force, as well as using new materials technology.

Insulation is critical in both environments, though underwater, the cold is FAR less unforgiving than in space... 4 degrees celcius, as compared to the 3 degrees KELVIN of the background temperature of space. Sounds like conceptual training wheels for effective insulation to me.

Sensor technology is actually more challenged underwater than in deep space, considering the abundance of living things, sedimentation and so on that can add to the other challenges of being underwater...

Propulsion technologies differ vastly, but things that we learn for underwater design will be used in the lower-density fluid dynamics of alien atmospheres, not to mention if the worlds we encounter are largely aquatic in nature.

I could probably go on for a number of more paragraphs, but I think that there should be a program developed for RATIONAL development of the sea floors, while at the same time getting NASA back on track for first developing an effective skywatch program for Near Earth Objects that could threaten us, in order to give us a long enough timeframe to react to those, and so on, and so on.

NEITHER should be given up, but I can see how they'd synergize so beautifully with each other that it would bring tears to your eyes.

Some guy on TV (scientist maybe, forgot) claimed that we probably know more about our own solar system (the space in our solar system, NOT the planets, astroids, and moons of it) than the "space" of our own deep seas...

So I would try to find giant squids, leviathans, nessies, and other things in the deep...

Of course, Space.

Ocean is like digging deeper to the Earth's core without so much in breaking the ground, but rather diving into the water and finding out what lies beneath the ground. Could it be? Sea-monsters living under the planet? Or perhaps, a history of another long buried civilization? Or just experiencing the depth of the planet actually is.. wow. Big whoop.

Space, on the other hand, looks as if it is just one endless space filled with stars and planets. But wait, what if there is more to that? One could use imagination to answer that. But it could be, somehow, that what lies ahead in the future could explain such strange phenomenon. Who knows? The possibilites are endless..
