    Section 1: Frequently asked Questions

    1. What is Oh! Text Hooker and Atlas?
Oh! Text Hooker is a neat little program that basically hooks onto a process and grabs the text from it. While it may sound like it doesn't do much, when coupled with a translation software like Atlas it becomes a very powerful tool in translating text from many programs. In this case, it is used in translating Japanese PC games from Japanese to English.

    2. Which version of OTH will work with Atlas?
The latest version of OTH, Ver. 1.0 is the final build. In order to use it with Atlas, you will need the proper Atlas plugins for it. For convenience, I've compiled a stripped version of OTH w/ Atlas plugins. You can get it here. (Note that this version will only work with Atlas. No other plugins are included)
    3. Ok, I have the game and the programs. How do I use it?
There is an step by step walkthough in the next section. Just follow the simple instructions to get it working with your game.
    4. Help! My game doesn't work!
While OTH/Atlas is a powerful tool for translating games, it doesn't work all the time. There are many PC games with that do not work due to the fact that it's not OTH friendly. To put it bluntly, it's either hit or miss.

If you would like to save yourself the frustration of finding which games will work, there is a growing list of games that have been tested to work and not work with OTH. Just scroll down to Section 3: The Oh! Text Hooker List of Compatible and Incompatible Games to view the full list.
    5. I want to help with the list! How do post my games?
If you would like, you can add to the growing list by posting your experiences with a game you've recently played to help out the community. Please read the guidelines before posting your experiences.
    6. Who wrote this FAQ?
A web designer with too much time on his hands? Mah~ Before it was anime that took up this poor soul's time at work, now it's playing games like Clover Hearts, Canvas2 and Operation Sanctuary on his notebook (now dubbed the ren'ai machine by a coworker @.@)

    Section 2: Walkthroughs

    1. How to use Oh! Text Hooker and Atlas

This section will help you learn how to use OTH/Atlas in an easy step by step process.

    (1)
Start the game. If there are opening movies, skip or wait until it's over and brings you to the game menu. If possible, play the game in windowed mode for easier access to OTH and the Quick Atlas window. (For best performance, exit out of any unecessary programs as QuickAtlas will take a significant amount of memory and processing power)

    (2) Start QuickAtlas. Notice in your taskbar, a green icon will pop up. That is QuickAtlas running in the background. Right Click on it to bring up the menu and select Automatic Clipboard Translation.

    (3) Double click the icon to open the QuickAtlas window. Here, you can resize it and adjust the window to fit your needs. The top part of the window is the Japanese text while the bottom is the english translation. (Tip - you can click on the center bar to hide the japanese text, leaving only the english box as pictured below)

    (4) Now you will need to attach Oh! Text Hooker to the game. Start OTH using the MS-DOS Batch file as seen in the screenshot (Do not start using the OTH application in the subfolder)

If you are not sure if your version of OTH is Atlas ready, you can download a stripped version of it in the FAQ section.

    (5) Once you start the executable, a window will pop up with list of currently running processes. Select the game from the process list and click Attach.

    (6) This will bring up the text window settings for OTH. For best translation results, select the following options as detailed in the screenshot. Use the translation plugin jatlas_ansi2.dll from the list. then click OK.

    (7) Now that the game is properly hooked, go to the game window. You'll notice now that the Atlas window will now have translated the text for the game. Congratulations, you have succesfully hooked the game!

    2. Editing Registry to prevent Focus Stealing

Prevents Quick Atlas window from stealing focus of the game. Helpful for games that require window focus in order to play, and games that have menu translation problems.

DISCLAIMER: Editing your registry is risky and can cause damage to your computer if you do not know what you are doing. While this walkthrough is very straightforward and foolproof as long as you follow the directions, the writer nor the site that this FAQ is posted on is liable for damages you may incur from using this FAQ.

    (1) Open your start menu and click RUN from the list.

    (2) Type in REGEDIT and click Run. This will open your Registry Editor in a new window. Please do not attempt to edit anything in your registry that is not written in this walkthrough.

    (3) The registry you are attempting to edit is in My Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Desktop. Open the registry Foreground Lock Timeout and enter in the values 30d40 using the Hexadecimal Base.

    (4) Click OK then Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

    3. Customizing your Atlas User Dictionary

Follow this walkthrough to fix mistranslated names and other terms that can ruin the translation. Do this before or while you play to fix most of the problems that will come up later in the game.

DarkEternal, stop using Oh! Text Hooker. This thread needs to be locked by a moderator. Start using AGTH - Anime Games Text Hooker. It's a stickied thread in the H Game dicussion forum - http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36807.

Good guide on using AGTH written by FHC - http://br.geocities.com/fhcofbrasil/...themumjogo.htm

Not sure which game it is you're talking about, but if you're using OTH you will have a hard time troubleshooting the real issue and OTH is incompatible with the majority of games out there, unlike AGTH which is compatible with MOST of the games out there, and its support for games is getting better and better due to the creator adding new things and users like HF members in the AGTH thread contributing codes and patches.

Edit: Just reading page 18 of this thread. Almost the games that were asked about are supported by AGTH except Baldr Force EXE I believe. Doing a "thread search"(go to first page of thread and look for "Search this thread") for the game's romaji title in the AGTH thread would find out if it someone else has posted their experience with the game.

Could anyone tell me what QuickAtlas is?

QuickAtlas is a component of Fujitsu Atlas. Atlas is a translation software package for Japanese to English and vice versa. There is a trial version available for download, currently the newly released version 13. QuickAtlas in particular is used for its automatic clipboard translation function. Since AGTH and OTH automatically send the captured Japanese text from games to the clipboard, QuickAtlas can automatically translate them into English.

Why is Atlas used over other translation software? Probably because it's the best out there. You can add words to your own custom dictionary and modify the priority of words as they would appear in translation. If you've used it for any amount of time, your custom dictionary will grow to the thousands.

Last of all, Atlas is a crutch. So is AGTH. Great tools that greatly ease the pain of learning another language, but if you rely too much on them you'll eventually start to plateau. Don't let it do all the work for you. Take the time to start memorizing a few kanji every day and learn how to read hiragana and katakana, which should take about a week if you try hard. Eventually, Atlas will just become a kanji translation tool for you, and you'll start to see the limits of Atlas.

Right now, I don't see an easier way to start learning Japanese than with AGTH + Atlas + Kanji to Romaji + WWWJDIC.

See the first page of this thread - #2. Editing Registry to prevent Focus Stealing.

However, if that doesn't work, then the quickatlas.exe needs to be modified.

Download the "Fix QuickAtlas to Prevent Focus Steal" file and use the .par to edit your QuickAtlas.exe. This will probably only work with v11 of Atlas. Search the current AGTH thread for the post on how to edit current v13(which hex values to change).

                • unless i am doing something wrong, watashi no puni puni is incompatable with text hook.

text hooker is not able to grab the text and throw it to the clipboard for some reason, and so there is nothing for atlas to translate. i've tested it several times using the logging in OTH and absolutely nothing shows up.

hope this helps increase the list a little at least

                    • Humm, I dunno about anyone else, but I can't seem to get Custom Slave Fantasy or "Kiss" to work. No it's not Kiss x 300, it's a different game.

Anyway, the text when I try to use the Text Hooker just doesn't appear at all. It could be something I've done wrong though, or it could be it isn't compatible. I would like a more definite answer...if you please. And I'd also like to know if anyone knows if it is also compatible with Custom Reido III.

Any help that could be offered about the text problem would greatly be appreciated. And, any answers to either questions would also be appreciated.

This is the game I'm talking about, which is Custom Reido F, apparently. Honestly, I don't even know how to read Japanese, so yeah, heh.

                      • Dll error

To anybody who reads this thread and knows how to program. Is anybody working on the DLL to make text hook work with online translation. The previous DLL has stopped working. True I can still use Atlus but I liked the better translation the online version did.

                              • Ditto. I ran TweakUI and changed the focus stealing setting too.

                                And of course, I rebooted.

AHA! The Par2 patch for quickatlas.exe worked like a charm.
