  • any eta on a way to curtail the spam-bots?

kinda annoying checking in and realising any post anyone might make will be flooded out in a day.
free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

First you better tell how far you'd like to go to get rid of them. Common "solutions" that just keep them out simply won't help anymore and even those might keep newcomers away. I've seen captcha which utterly failed along with lists which are not only a PITA to maintain but even more of a PITA to weight properly.

Now I kinda doubt that you want to go for manual account activation since that would also require high maintenance... which might not even be a surefire solution whatever way one would adjust it.

To begin with, what I guess should work quite neat and should not bother newcomers too much, would be adding something to sign up that bots usually can not circumvent by themselves. Namely one question out of a set of custom questions that need to be answered in order to successfully sign up. The maker would need to manually set the answers which should be too much of a PITA for them, if not from the get go, over mid or long term at least.

Q&As could for example be for dates or names from anime and similar works which can be swiftly looked up in dbs. Setting this up and if necessary maintaining+adjusting it should not be difficult. Linking a help and guideline page should be sweet indeed, so that not some fool uses MM/DD/YYYY, oh wait... (YMD ftw!)

        Why not try CAPTCHA?

Well, one can always try I guess but I have seen similar if not the same bot (for live streaming whoever vs whomever, babaji is apparently not here nor are wall-of-fitness-tips&links-to-drinks, all of them were also) avoiding CAPTCHA at least, possibly even reCAPTCHA if I do not recall correctly which one was actually used. (should have been a set of two unrelated phrases). My best guess is that they simply have been sophisticated that far, with equal input being made into making the puzzles and so the automated responses for default questions/being able to read with OCR

(there are simply so many possibilities and I ain't that much into software to understand one or even both sides), heck why I suggest a custom Q&A list at least which should prove to be too much of a bother to circumvent constantly or at least requiring less maintenance than constant cleaning if any effective (and if they can answer such questions anyway, all hope is lost)

iirc, when the forum was updated, whatever plugin had been created to use capcha at some point in the past, became unusable.
        though my memory is screwy.

seem some of the new 2factor logins that look like theyd screw bots over a bit.
eg when you sign up, are are emailed a 6 to 8 digit pin, then to log in you need to put in your password, then select 3 random numbers from your pin to log in.

dunno if daily house cleaning would work though. given the sheer flood it could result in mods posting dickpizza and ftsio
