  • Auto-translating Japanese games to English?

I am a newbie and my knowledge of Japanese is .
I have searched the forums and found numerous tools like AGTH, ATLAS, Translation Aggregator, TAHelper, etc etc. There's so many of them I'm completely confused (yes, I am easily confused )

My question is, which combination works best?

Basically, I want to play those text-based Japanese games translated into English text (I know it won't be in game, and mainly copy-and-paste into a translator).
How do I get that to happen with the MINIMUM number of programs to install?

    Thanks in advance

To keep it simple, Atlas you need because that is the dictionary proggy. AGTH is the tool that "steals" the kanji from the game and puts it on your windows clipboard, and Translation Aggregator is the proggy that makes AGTH and ATLAS work together so you can view the english texts. That way you don't have to copy/paste yourself. Of course there are many many more options to tinker with.

You have 2 requirements which are kinda exclusive to each other. What works best, isn't exactly what can be installed with minimum effort. AGTH hooks into the game and extracts the original text, ATLAS translates texts, Translation Aggregator offers access to multiple translation engines and improves ATLAS translation quality, TAHelper offers additional tools to improves translation quality.

Minimum installation is probably best based on Translation Aggregator as you can leave out ATLAS and it comes already with AGTH. I've put together and attached a config for TA which should make it easy and less confusing to get a start.

      - download and unpack the attached zip file
      - launch Translation Aggregator.exe, launch your game
      - in Translation Aggregator select the menu item Tools -> Launch Text Hooker
      - on the right hand side you'll see a list of .exe names, select the .exe of your game
      - some games require special codes (usually called h-code as they start with /H e.g. /HA0@483949) to get text extracted, those codes need to go into the 'add parameters' line at the bottom of the middle section
      - there are lots of other options, but you can ignore them
      - finally click 'ok' and a new program window for AGTH should come up.
      - once you've forced the game to show some more dialogue on screen check through the drop down list in AGTH until you find one that has the current screen content
      - after you forced the game to show even some more text, it should be automatically copied&translated from the game via AGTH to TA

Fantastic! I have not yet tried out the solution but thank you all the same!

I've tried it out and Translation Aggregator works, but I get alot of repeats..
I've tried playing with the AGTH settings but can't get it to work nicely.

          Here's an example:

          【浩一】【浩一】【浩一】「ウ「ウヒ「ウヒャ「ウヒャヒ「ウヒャヒャ「ウヒャヒャッ「ウヒャヒャッ」「ウヒ ャヒャッ」

Basically the last sentence 「ウヒャヒャッ」is the correct line
But I can't get it to only display the last line.

Multi-line is obviously a mess as well.

          Any suggestions?

Guess I'll be greedy and also ask what is the best setup if the number of app isn't an issue?

          Thanks in advance!

It seems like you got it set up ok. The only thing you need now to get the most out of it is the correct AGTH code.
            http://agthdb.bakastyle.com/
If you can't find it there you will have to look in the AGTH thread for the correct code or get on your knees fold your hands and very very nicely ask Freaka if he can help you out since he is the master wizzard for finding AGTH codes

              Thanks so much!
It might be that game is quite old.. I tried some of the newer games and don't have that problem at all.

You'll want the MeCab and JParser portions the most.

I've been using it to great effect in my efforts at translating Arcana, although I can speak better Python and Ruby than Japanese.

That is precisely what I am doing with Arcana. I've cracked open the game's files and am doing a translation and conversion of the whole game based on the original art assets and text, and so far, I'm about a quarter of the way done, but my translations are probably riddled with mistakes. It's a lot of fun for me to convert the mini-games from the original proprietary scripting engine to Ren'py though... I've been using Translation Aggregator to run MeCab and JParser to assist the translation, mostly to provide furigana for strange kanji and obtain dictionary definitions for unfamiliar words.

Basically if no one has made an English patch or hacked the game you want the way I'm in the process of doing with Arcana, well, you have to do it yourself. Good luck. We're going to need it.

I followed your instructions and everything works fine. it shows the correct words in both of them that appears in the game. the only problem i have is it doesn't translate them. can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for this post. I have a 100 Japanese games I purchased and I would love to finally know what is being said. (referring to this article below)

Where do i find those " h-codes" I am running a game I purchases from DL-Site but still only get Kanji or Katakana ( not sure which) basically no translation using TA 0.4.3

I think I still need a translation dictionary like Atlas however I cannot even find the program to purchase it I find the Fujitsu website but the rest is kinda confusing
