  • Software and server upgraded again!! Now Dedicated SSD for the SQL server.

    Hi all HFires.

    Sorry for being MIA.

Was really busy. We now upgraded our SQL server to run on a dedicated SSD. And upgraded to the latest software again.

We are still trying to figure out how to reduce the lag. Could you guys give it a try and let us know if the performance are better? And if you still experience lags. Please let us know when you are lagging how many users were on and around what time the lag happens.

    Thanks ^^

Also I am going to reply my PMs slowly, Sorry because I have so many PM and emails to reply to. So please give me a little bit of time. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

What screen resolution are you using in 2016?

Yeah we already had the data centre support to blow out the dust from the server case. So let's give it a test few more days. also I am changing the style to default style to debug. will pose an announcement about it.

Thanks for the style VB5Guest. It shows the FP on very page again. Much appreciated.

The connection problem is still present. Your latest hardware upgrade reduced the delay after clicking the navigation bar from 15s down to 13s, but today I still got a timeout. I doubt that the problem can be solved with any hardware upgrade.

Between vB3 and vB5, was there a vB4? Would it be possible to migrate the current state of HF to an older version?

To be honest, vBulletin is such a huge project, I doubt they'd release a new major update which scales terribly like that. Even smaller board developer projects consider only boards with more than 1 million posts as "big". With HF having "only" 2.7 mio, they are "merely" in magnitude of 2.7 bigger than "just big". So there is a lot of margin towards "huge". Therefore I assume there is some kind of malicious traffic hiding which might actually be some constant DoS attack running against HF, probably not on an obvious service like www, but maybe there is some sync flood or similar which is just hogging huge amounts of RAM, CPU time and/or disc writes. Against well known systems little upstreams with just 1MBit/s in traffic, can consume large amounts of server resources. Sadly in the internet are a lot of idiots and a stupid high amount of them controls bots... even a single unprotected VPS is sufficient for a lot of trouble, if you are not using enterprise level firewalls. From a friend who sells such firewall I know there is nothing they can't stop, it's just a matter of how much resources you invest. You can't expect a 100 $ firewall to block a 1 TBit/s DDoS attack (especially since the most critical performance here is not the bits per second, but the packets per second), but maybe it would be enough for HF to protect it's 100~1000Mit/s connection. Maybe even some properly set up adaptive iptables firewall on the server itself.

The cached HongFire pages on Google also load very slowly and time out or bug out. It took me 3 hours to past this message.

Site is still extremely slow, edits don't take effect, if I manage to edit something then the changes don't appear immediatley, if at all.
I'm not sure if the signature tab has been fixed yet or if it is timing out on me.
Another image host banned HF and now my signature is filled with these huge announcements, which I can not delete. I'm breaking (unintentionally) the forum rules and can't do anything about it, because changing signatures is impossible. This may also affect other users.

2 posts I have been trying to edit for 3 hours now, the only thing that's happening is an error message popping up. This makes it impossible to update content & links meant for the community. I tried out both forum styles, it doesn't make a difference though.

There are currently 666 users online. 52 members and 614 guests.
Also, could someone please delete my signature until the issue is resolved? Everytime I post into a thread I clutter it up.

            Regards,
            Snooley

EDIT: Editing signatures now works again, not sure if I was just lucky or if it was fixed. If it was indeed fixed then thank you, much appreciated! : )

I know the English sounds like machine translation, but it should still be obvious why many might have uploaded inappropriate material.

PS: right now hF is more or less okay, but that's still rather an exception to mark with a big red cross on the calendar.

Yeah it's still a bit finicky for me, sometimes the board is slow and sometimes not.

Can we get the arrows and double arrows back in for navigating big threads? If that makes sense, or I'm not seeing them?

The 1 page arrows are there, but not the first and last page arrows. I miss them myself, always have to scroll back to bottom or bother the keyboard for that.

Okay yeah. Sometimes clicking on a thread sends me to the first page, when I want to go to the last right away. Then it takes a little longer to get there manually having to type. lol...

The go to last post button is still there, but it is invisible.

The behaviour of HF is different today. Overall the board is faster, except for the navigation bar. But while I had to wait 13 seconds in the past to see any update, the current page went blank immediately today. It still took 13 seconds until the navigation showed the destination (Hentai Lair). Afterwards even the navigation bar was fast for a few minutes. Then another 13 second delay, but since then no page took longer than a 3-4 seconds to be shown.

You can either have the buttons or the repetition of the FP as it seems.

For about one hour HF isn't responsive as before. Reaching this thread took me several minutes.

At least there's one thing that has been consistent through this.

The clock is back to being an hour fast.

Posting seems to take some time, but at least navigation speed is now fine. Thanks.
