  • The Official "Hongfire Update" Thread

I'm currently writing out a document containing different changes and updates
of what I would like to see done on Hongfire.com, and then presenting it to
TSR, and Lisa Hayes, and see if we can't get some of these bugs and changes
to be completed instead of the "hiatus" we seem to be stuck in.

I know there are some other threads for suggestions and that, but I want to
make a compilation of things that you, the users of this forum, would like to
see...I know some of you would have some crazy ideas!

    So far, my list contains:

    1) Fixing the menu bar
    - Replacing torrents/ddls with the mods sections
    - Adding back in FlashChat
    - Removing the Wiki

    2) Remove trading thread

    3) Organize Technology Sub Section
    - Replace Linux with "Mobile/Other OS"
    - Smart Phones / Gadgets & Smart Phones combined into "Mobile Hardware"
    - Remove company review

    4) Update Club Houses Sub Section
...haven't gotten around to how to do this yet

    5) Roleplaying Sub Section could go into The Underground as its sub section

    6) Future ideas on possibly getting our tracker/torrents back

    7) Flagging, Captcha and other attempts at curbing spam bots
...and that's about as far as I've gotten.

Please help me flesh this out more as I want to present this in a viable way
and help get this forum re-energized!

Firstly, this is a great idea. Certainly time that some of these things can finally be fixed. Although to be serious, I can't believe some of these things haven't been changed yet. Ever since HF-appocalypse 2011 these have been issues. I remember Shrag's absence being the main reason that they couldn't be fixed before but are TSR & Lisa able to fix it? Then what about xcali or Para? How many of the site staff are currently active?

Haha, I would love to have some crazy ambitious ideas but from the activity on the site lately a lot of them won't amount to that much so focusing on the simple basics is a good plan. Re-energizing the site is definitely a lofty goal but it's always good to have discussions about possible ideas!

I agree completely with all of your listed points. 4 & 6 will be the most difficult. The others are simple enough for anyone who has the ability to update them over.

The club houses are going to need a major revamp which shamen told me was in the works before HF(the person) became sick again. Not quite sure what exactly he had in mind and I didn't get too much info from people that I asked about that. Although namely the HF-Yushy has stayed consistently active so you may want to discuss ideas with S&T or someone from there. Keeping it simple may be an idea. Fewer clubs? Completely reworked leadership to encourage people to be active? It needs to be something drastic or else it will stay a graveyard, at least I think it would.

Yeah, torrents/trackers may be worthwhile and it's goes without saying that DDL are out of the question. Even torrents are going to be difficult so put that at a lower priority.

I'd like to add that I think it would be wise to make the hentai section more obvious and easy to access. It's the most active so that's probably a good idea.

Another idea should be to look into how to deal with the spam bots. I have been seeing an influx with at least 4-7 every single day for the past few months. As solar mentioned they are linking to illegal streaming sites all the time which makes them a risk to the safety of the site if a government enforcer sees it. I like the idea to use the 1st post needs mod approval method. Captchas don't work. Then as Corelain suggested this would be useful too. The current plan needs to change somehow because it's just too annoying as well as risky to keep doing what we're doing now.

Learn lots. Don't judge. Laugh for no reason. Be nice. Seek happiness.

I think those are fair ideas and I have nothing to add to the list. Some of them are pretty simple details and others are complicated due to external facts (like torrents, but we are unable to do that too?). Also I have no idea what Club Houses are to be honest but whatever is meant to make this site better I will agree.

everything seems ok. But the torrents will be a tricky one to do. When we do reach that point i believe restricting what kind of torrents are allowed to be up like allowing titles that have not been licenced/released to EU and NA, which would require either more mods or understanding+approved uploaders and perhaps upgrading the captcha so we dont get porn DDL bots running rampant.

Honestly, it's just TSR, xCal, Lisa for the admin team, stukasa and myself for
the mods. Lisa has some experience tinkering with the forums, not sure how
capable TSR or xCal, simple because I haven't asked. Stukasa pretty much
flat out denied any kind of experience. I have the know-how to make changes,
except on vB 4.x simply because I haven't touched it. I've screwed around
with several of the earlier versions though. My hands are tied regardless.

It's figuring out what to keep and what to lay in the graveyard section
really for the Club House. The other idea was possibly moving it up from
the near bottom of the list so it could receive more attention.

The "leadership" part is yet another issue with that section, since most
          are absent.

I have found viable solutions for this, but I need Hong's final nod of
approval as it requires a bit of startup capital and moving the entire
site to another set of servers. DDL is possible, but at this early EARLY
part in the game, it's a solid "no".

Changing some of the layout was another though process I had, but
I haven't done any layout sketches yet. Goes along with the whole
          Club House section.

I've mentioned to the admin team exactly where these bots have been
coming from, but there hasn't been an agreed upon action plan. So for
now, the only thing we can do is manually remove them once either
reported, or we see them ourselves.

The Club Houses were originally "factions" within Hongfire for sharing
discussions about their interests; then with the vBulletin upgrade to
4.x, it was decided to extend this into the "Groups" tab that you see
in the menu because at this point, most of the clubs were "dead".
An idea has crossed that we remove the Club House section completely
and use that Groups section to a fuller extent.

If we stay within servers that have MPAA/RIAA/DMCA written all over
it, yes, it will be an absolute nightmare. Offshore servers would do
the trick, but again, I need Hong's approval.

Thank you guys for your input thus far~

Ah, so just the five of you. Yeah that's what I was thinking. I haven't seen Desmonthes or shamen around too recently. TSR has said he knows basic programming but I don't believe xcali has mentioned it at any point. I know that stukasa isn't in that field of expertise. Hopefully Lisa can implement these changes then. She was away for quite awhile so it's great to see her back again.

I think the key to reviving the club house is going to be the leadership. Without current active members to control it then it will just simply fade again regardless of the changes. I'm not so sure about giving a greater emphasis to the group sections. From what I have seen that has become a graveyard as well with no clear signs of a resurgence anytime soon. This will need to be something where new members feel like it's convenient to make impulsive posts. Hard to say if it's possible at this point. With a reworking of the layout in the site it might work I guess.

Wait, you know where the bots are coming from? Surely there must be a course of action you can decide simply from that. Although It did indeed appear that they were all from one source. I have to say It's ridiculous to just mindlessly delete the same bots over and over and over again. Maybe some simple short-term plan to stop that one source?

Hopefully you get Hongfire's approval with regard to that ambitious offshore server idea of yours. Having the downloads back would certainly help the site with the slump in traffic problem. Do you think that donations would be allowed anytime soon or is that still off the table? I don't really see how this is still considered a primarily "adult" site anyway now that the downloads aren't as predominate. Were we going to change the slogan of this site by the way or are we sticking to HongFire.com | Anime | Manga | Games | MMORPG | Friendly Community?

Also I have to say it's great to get some reports from the site staff. It has been FAR too long since we got regular site announcements as to the progress or any idea with how it has been going here.

Moving the server does seem to be the biggest of problems and a solution to the site's low activity.
Where would the server be likely relocated when the time arrives?

HF-Clubs: is it possible for the administration to "wipe" the leadership and re-instate new club-leaders? And i think the club section would be better placed under the Anime/Manga section.

Filesharing: Originally, what were the majority targets of the DMCA/Copyright claims? I dont think we should allow filesharing be in Anime/Manga and probably large title games, with non-hentai doujin games be the exception. If we steer away on featuring NA/EU licensed content maybe we dont have to offshore the server.

Misc: Maybe we can add a small flash games library where we can compete with other hongfirians? Like tetris, brick breake, etc... a small community gimmick.

The problem here is that not everyone would abide by the rules since there were still users posting content that breached them (licensed material and content available on DLsite after the total ban on material available on either the English or Japanese sites came into force) even after the filesharing section was locked down to users that had a specific rank there were those who risked losing that rank by breaching the rules.

Considering the amount of people who have an allergy to the scroll wheel on their mouse (or whatever device their using) posting ID request threads in sections where there's a dedicated ID thread, if filesharing was opened up again the rules would most likely never be read and threads would have to be constantly moderated or removed.

Understandable. So the solution would be having a lot of moderators to constantly monitor the threads?
And does moving the server where dmca has a lesser influence will that lessen the problem?

Let's be honest, torrents and DDL will make people come back aside if the material is licensed of not this is true. If changing the servers somewhere with other laws is possible I'll vote for that.

What about a new forum skin? An option between light and dark skin would be cool too.

maybe we can add the monthly hentai & seasonal anime lists featured on the homepage?

Also how about HManga releases too? I could give a try helping in both HAnime and HManga releases monthly.

Sorry guys, I've been extremely busy with the final days of this semester
and I'll be in and out for the next couple days, however I plan on dissecting
your ideas and give feedback. Feel free to do the same for my posts.

The solution would be to have moderators who have their finger on the pulse of what would be allowed and what wouldn't.

Considering the PM I got from TSR just before the server was taken offline, I have a feeling that the admin might have had the same idea.
