A late happy new year to you!
Wanted to let you know that I've found a way to trick SB3UGS into giving me exactly the tangent data I want for each model.
I have a version of my model that is UV unwrapped as necessary, and I then make another version that is UV unwrapped automatically through the cylinder or sphere method.
This makes the whole UV map go the same way, so I use the automatically unwrapped model to get automatically generated normals and tangents for my model, and I then import the original model (which is the same, but with ,say, a UV map that may have been problematic) and I simply use the copy normals options available in SB3UGS.
I've tested it with a beveled cylinder, will attempt to use it on later problematic models.
Edit: My bad, doesn't work entirely on more complex meshes.

Happy new year to you too!
We discussed that topic lately and I made a special version for tweaking tangents. It might fail for complex meshes as well, but zeaska showed some screenshots where these functions work.
