Thread: Is Megaupload dead in Hong Kong?

Is Megaupload dead in Hong Kong?

I'm currently in Hong Kong and have not been able to access Megaupload at all for the past month. Every time I load a Megaupload page, I'm given this message:

This service is temporarily not available from your service area.

Aside from that, I am seriously not liking my time in Hong Kong.

Judging from traffic on my own blog to their hosting, it's definitely banned on the Chinese mainland, and certain places in Hong Kong also have it banned.
Good job everyone! Keep up the great work!

    I'll look into that, thanks!

    EDIT:
Tried out youtubeproxy.org, the downloads could never finish and now I'm being given the "wait 478 minutes before you can use our miserable service again, mwahahahahahahhaah!" or something like that. Oh well.

    I live in Hong Kong.

It is a completely different network to China mainland. We connect to the world via trans-Pacific cables mostly, doesn't go near China.
There is no "banning" here. There are lots of political sites based in HK that would never be allowed in China, for instance.

I think that Megaupload, based in Hong Kong, might have been threatened by local media companies, or just decided to avoid controversy, so they block local users.

However, I use jDownloader, which automates downloads from many free hosts, including Megaupload, and it can get them quite reliably. Apparently if you install Megaupload's toolbar that will work too -- though I'd never install that kind of thing myself, not really wanting to deal with the ads, spyware, etc such usually contain.
