Thread: The Grrl Power! Project (in development)

  1. Smile022 The Grrl Power! Project (in development)

"The kind of fun adventures innocent young girls imagine in their dreams, with the kind of endings perverted old men imagine in their dreams."

From the creator of the Xenoscourge series comes Grrl Power!
It's a new game, similar to Xenoscourge but with a customizable main character and an action combat system (as opposed to the traditional RPG Maker XP fighting system).

Grrl Power has a lighter feel than Xenoscourge. It is also more open ended than Xenoscourge. In Grrl Power, there is not a central story or plot (at least none planned right now), but lots of things to do in the world that it takes place in. In a sense, you can make your own adventure by just exploring and interacting with the many elements that make up the world. As you explore and adventure on your own, you'll learn more about the world, and uncover plots and characters that are scheming for power. The background of your character is largely up to your imagination. She can be a superhero, a crime fighter, or just a curious girl out looking for some fun. There will be lots of things to do - hunt criminals, discover and interact with aliens, explore space, party with friends, etc. Though most of this hasn't been set in stone yet, the idea here is to create a kind of "adventure engine" that I can upgrade over time to expand the number of possibilities for what's possible. I'm designing the game in a modular way, so that upgrades and even mods can be made for it. If you want to make your own clothes for the game, you could even do that, all you have to do is edit the png files in the graphics folder. You can also make your own bodies, etc. I use Schoolmate to create all my girl graphics, but a potential total conversion could completely rewrite all the graphics files and thus one could fill the game with their own art, so the possibilities for modders are excellent.

For activities, I'm using the game as a kind of testbed for experimenting with various possibilities. If I can imagine it, I want it to be a possible activity in the game. I'm hoping to have a variety of action-oriented game types making up the various activities. From clearing a map of baddies to treasure hunting in a roguelike dungeon, completing puzzles, tackling social challenges, and combinations of these - I'm designing the setting for the game to be open enough that nothing I can think of would necessarily be limited by the game's story or premise. As a result, the game world is a quasi-futuristic world that resembles today's world, but with some nanotech devices, magic artifacts, spaceships, aliens and fantasy monsters (like orcs), and interesting NPC's to deal with - sorta like the worlds of certain comic books.

The main reason I went with this is because I started coming up with too many ideas while developing Xenoscourge and was unable to implement those ideas the way I wanted within the constraints of the world I had built.

This is first and foremost a game, so I don't want to get bogged down by story limitations or overly serious content. I want it to be fun, with my typical sense of humor sprinkled around nicely, but I'm also using it to experiment with game design and story development concepts, so anything goes. On the surface, the world is light and fun, but underneath it's dark and twisted. The focus of the game is NOT on adult content, as you might expect from other hentai games. But there is adult content, and there could be quite a lot of it in any given playthrough, depending on what you do and how you have the options set. Ultimately I just want to create a huge and dynamic world full of interesting experiences. Some of those experiences may be more or less kinky/offensive/disgusting/weird than you may have expected. Bear this in mind. If you really don't like those things, you can turn off the hentai content in the preferences. The game will modify your experience so that you won't have to experience those things, though there may still be some PG-13 level content you may encounter.

    Releases:

    Grrl Power 2
Grrl Power 2 is a redesign of the original game, to overcome many poorly implemented features that caused problems in the original, due to lack of experience with RPG Maker VX in the specific context the game required me to work within. GP2 fixes those issues by basically rewriting the entire game from the ground up. However, in order to do this properly, I needed to expand the scope of the subengines I was developing, and this ended up adding a huge amount of time to the development process. As such GP2 is a slowly growing behemoth of a game which will probably never be finished. I add to it when I have time, and hopefully someday it will actually be a worthwhile playable game. Right now, it isn't. But you can download it anyway and try it out. Just be prepared to waste alot of hard drive space on it if you do. If you want a playable game, download the original Grrl Power game, available via the torrent attached to this post.

I've made this early version of the game available for anyone to download for a few reasons. The first reason is that people were asking me to, and I decided to since the interest seemed pretty good. The second reason is that it effectively gives me an offsite backup. If anything should happen to my computer that would cause the loss or corruption of my current dev build, I can redownload it from my latest torrent from the seeders. I've actually already done this once. So, even if you're not interested in seeing how the game is coming along, you can help me by donating your hard drive space to seeding the dev torrent.

To run the Alpha Dev version, please remove the recipes.rf file in the data folder. This file auto-generates and causes crashes when the game is run on other computers. No idea why, if anyone figures it out let me know.

NOTE: GP2 entered Ace development several months ago but incompatibilities in Ace have caused serious issues in further development. This branch has been labeled Unstable and it truly is unstable - you probably will not be able to run it, however you may get some benefit out of having access to the dev files which you can load up in RPG Maker VX Ace to edit or poke at. The old VX version has been made available as an alternative. It's more playable but still just as incomplete as ever. Both versions are on hold until a course of action can be decided upon. I don't want to develop more in VX if the problems in Ace are resolved as it will be nearly impossible to port the changes over from VX to Ace. I will post updates on this process as they come.

    Grrl Power 1.4
The original game, patched up to version 1.4 with Legraf's patches. The Gazpacho patch is not included in the direct download or torrents, but it's easy enough to install it on top of those versions. This version of the game is playable and mostly bug free, but pretty light. It isn't very big, because it was never really finished, but there are a few things to do, like play around at a kinky LAN party, or explore space and play around with kinky space pirates. Consider it a concept demo of what Grrl Power 2 might be someday.

Want to help? Here are the things I need help with:

    Voice Acting:
    original post: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showth...98#post3401898
I need female voice actors to provide voice work to be used for player voice sets. If you think you can handle ALOT of voice acting and will be available for potentially years to come, I may even consider having you completely voice one or several important female NPC's in the game, if you're up for it. Please make sure you have a decent microphone. It's nice if you can do the editing yourself, but if not I can handle that part. All you would need to do is record and send me the sound clips.

    Ruby Scripting:
    no projects at the moment

  3. Update: GP2 VX available

The old VX version of GP2 has been posted to MEGA. You can get it here:

This link has also been updated into the original post.

  4. The question of why there hasn't been more open source Unity games intrigued me (especially the part about licensing confusion) so I went through Unity's EULA really quickly. But it's late and I'm tired, so...

Unity really only has two licenses, a free one and a pro one, where if you make a lot of money you have to get the pro version.
I think they advertise this as a good thing, since that means (theoretically) you can make a lot of games for free until you hit that mark somehow.
They also specifically say "no using our stuff to make things dedicated to gambling" a lot.

As for why there are not a lot of (I've never actually seen one, to be honest) open-source Unity games, one possible reason is Unity's insistence on not mixing licenses, which is a little convoluted in its wording and is thus pretty confusing...another one is that Unity updates pretty quickly (5 is around the corner and it will depreciate a lot of stuff, for a given value of corner-arounding) and that rapid iteration might throw some people off, especially if they wanted to make games earlier than Unity's introduction to the market and already bought and learned something like RPG maker.

Plus, by the virtue of being older, RPG maker has more stuff available (and as a result more free stuff to use)...

Either way I don't think there is a legal issue when it comes to Unity and Open-source games (assets that you end up buying might be a different issue, though I can't see any legal grounds for someone to complain about you buying their stuff to use in an adult game...though if they do complain it's a lot better to back off anyways), it could just be an age thing.

I mean, Unity did open up their source code (or at least parts of it), so it's hard to believe that they could be heavily anti...what would you call this? Freeware?

  5. You dont need to pay anything, and what kind of concept you want me to send you as a skill and style test? I like creating stuff by themes, first I get one, them brainstorming and finally stuff(drawings), also I dont like to recicle drawings, its best for me if you tell me what you want(weapon, clothing, character, mob) and Ill draw it(even if its just a test), if you want I can also make backstories/descriptions for them.
About being a dedicated artist, Ill help when possible but life, studies and stuff so maybe Ill have to desapear from the forums for some time for reasons (not always but will probably happen). Also studying design mean that Im still learning but dont know some stuff yet, for now I dont model very well (but Im studying it), so moddeling only on march probably, because I need training.
So about the concept art test, you want a character or something else? Also if its a character you want backstory, design concept document(weapons, clothing, skills(written ideas only, no weapons and stuff concept art yet, because Ill probaly brainstorm and go wild and wont have time to make all my ideas)) and Itll be human or alien(you said GP3d will be in space somewhere).
With great powers come the possibility to say "screw you guys i have powers, I dont need to be here listening to your bullshit"

My plans are to switch to the pro version of Unity if I end up making enough through Patreon or other sources to actually do so, since there are some nice features in Unity Pro that aren't available in the free license. If there are complaints about the content of my games, I'll deal with those at the time. As far as open source goes, we can try a few things and see how it goes.

I have a few characters we can try. How familiar are you with my work outside of Grrl Power? Grrl Power has always focused more on the player's character, which can be almost anything. I have plans to add other characters that you can meet and interact with but since I haven't gotten to that point yet, you probably haven't seen them. However, characters from Xenoscourge or my creative writing projects might work well. For starters, have you read "The adventures of Quinn Patrick"? This was a series of short stories I posted some time ago on this forum. The series never went as far as I'd have liked it to, but the Quinn Patrick character will be making appearances in future projects. If you haven't read the stories, here is a quote from the first story:

"...she wasn't exactly attractive, but she wasn't terribly ugly either, at least not by most standards. She looked very much like a nerd. She had a small build and was rather short for her age. She was slim because she studied nutrition and knew how to eat properly so that she would be healthy. Her long brown hair was almost always kept in a ponytail in order to keep it out of her face, that is when she didn't have it cut short. The only reason it ever got long was because she didn't consider haircuts to be a very useful application of time and was always too busy working on some project to get her hair cut on a regular basis. The fact that the rare times she actually got compliments on her apperance were usually about her long hair didn't change this much either. Her dark brown eyes were slightly magnified by her large plastic-framed glasses. Quinn never wore any makeup, but didn't really need to because, luckily, her complexion was very smooth. She was a bit pale, however, but not to any excess. She knew the importance of sunlight for one's health and made a point to get a small amount of it every day."

So basically, a short, skinny nerd girl with an average bust (though at some point one of her experiments accidentally causes her breasts to grow rather large - so that's an option if you want to try that). As for her outfit, she wears simple clothes since she doesn't see much point in dressing up. You can have some creative control over this. For ideas, she usually wears things like t-shirts, sometimes tanktops, jeans, shorts, and very rarely dresses or skirts. She wears overalls when she is working on machinery. Aside from her clothes, she should have some gadgets. She's not a cyborg, so don't go overboard with it, but she has used a utility belt at various times, she has a few different backpacks with different functions for different projects. You're free to use your creativity for designing these accessories. She also has this flying vehicle which is basically a hovering disc, so you can try that too. As far as weapons, anything from high-tech energy swords to laser guns would fit - or things more exotic and weird. She's an inventor after all.

If you need to know what kind of underwear she wears (if you wanted to do some kind of compromised scene - I certainly can't discourage this given the nature of my work), she prefers cheap, comfortable things that won't get in her way. Sports bras or T-shirt bras, satin or cotton panties, maybe even boxer shorts. They might be pretty silly or embarrassing, or just plain, since she doesn't care about fashion and just grabs whatever is cheap and fits.

I have a whole list of characters I can have you try, and I may use anything you submit to me in any of my future works. Let me know if you have any questions.

Sure, that's understandable. If this works out, I can send you a list of characters and descriptions and you can work on them in your own time. I'll also consider your own ideas for characters and assets if you can do the concept art for them. Just remember that for now most of your work is going to be on concept art. More practical stuff like models and sprites will come later, when it's needed and you have the training to do so.

  8. Yesterday Ive learned some thing really usefull: never argue with someone when your hand is in the doorframe, angry people like to slam doors. So no drawings until my hand recover, but I still want to help with the project, theres something non hand related you need help?

I should probably collect these somewhere at some point, but for now, here is a batch of stories I wrote some time ago during a writing spree: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...14/Stories.zip password is s2k

That batch also includes the Quinn Patrick episodic series I had thought about taking further but never did. The character at least will likely appear in future projects.

And here is a link to Xenoscourge, which is a short episodic RPG series I worked on before Grrl Power: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showth...ish-Hentai-RPG

I can't think of anything that wouldn't require a hand of some sort. At least there's no rush.

Weird. That's the link they gave me. There shouldn't be any key or anything required.
