Hmm. Sort of interesting that the first episode is a prequel to the first series. I actually felt trolled there for a second or two when Hotaru announce she was changing schools. <grin> Anyway, I hope they pick up where they left off. Not a bad episode, but it just isn't the same without all the girls together.

Non Non Biyori S1 and S2 = Repeat is a series with virtual stories in a completely realistic environment located in a part of the Hyogo prefecture (兵庫県) somewhere between Yakujin (厄神) and Miki (三木).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hy%C5%8Dgo_Prefecture
Even the railway line, which is the abandoned Miki Railway Company (三木鉄道株式会社) (aka Miki Rail Bus) Miki Line (三木線), is completely realistic. The railway line had to be closed because the decreasing amount of passengers did not justify public financial support anymore. Most of the few remaining passengers used the Ao Line (粟生線) of the Kobe Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (神戸電鉄株式会社) to get to Kobe. And that fact is to be seen in the small amount of students in the local school too. In that region that's what's causing it. Just too less people still live in that japanese loneliness. Miki Railway closed down on April 1, 2008, so the series happens ~ 10 years ago. From that point on a bus line took over the traffic between Yakujin and Miki. As funny as the series may be, it is still a social mirror...
I´ve got no clue if someone is interested in this, but this is something of a background and the location of these stories.
Being mentioned in this animation is the best memorial for the Miki Rail Bus, although there is a Memorial Park already existing for that railway at the Miki Station (三木駅)...

The lack of "Nyanpasu!" was quite noticeable in this episode. Perhaps at this point Ren-chon hasn't used it to greet people just yet. It would be nice to know how the phrase was invented.

Another add. hint: after Miki Railway Company (三木鉄道株式会社) (aka Miki Rail Bus) Miki Line (三木線) was closed in 2008 some of the trains were sold to the Tarumi Railway (樽見鉄道) Tarumi Line (樽見線). Tarumi Line (樽見線) is located between Ōgaki (大垣) and Tarumi (樽見) in Gifu Prefecture (岐阜県).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarumi...ay_Tarumi_Line
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A8...A6%8B%E7%B7%9A
The other part of the trains was sold to the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway (ひたちなか海浜鉄道) Minato Line (湊線). Minato Line (湊線) is between Katsuta (勝田) and Ajigaurau (阿字ヶ浦) inside Hitachinaka city (ひたちなか市) in Ibaraki Prefecture (茨城県).

To give complete information about this matter I added this facts, so maybe the series is located in one of these regions too, Minato Line (湊線) is in a region of high population though, so that the environments of Miki Line (三木線) and Tarumi Line (樽見線) are possible environments.

It's apparently a problem in much of rural Japan. The younger people see the cities as a more desirable place to live, so they move to the cities as soon as they are able, leaving few people aising families in the rural areas.
It has been mentioned in other anime, and I've seen a few documentary type programs that brought up the problem.

This is one of the numerous shows that are trying to make rural life attractive to city kids. Ditch the rat race for some rustic simplicity, and all that. You might notice that this genre(?) almost always has superior writing and production values. It's intended as light propaganda. Not that that matters much to me. I just enjoy the quality. And, yeah, Japan has a massive agricultural labor shortage that isn't going away any day soon. They need to make farm work lucrative and prestigious if they really want to attract people. Which has its own can of worms attached.

It will be interesting to see if Japan is successful in their attempts to attract people back to the rural areas, and whether or not they have the same problem I have seen in the US (people moving to an area, in an attempt to get away from the rat race, then trying to change the new area to be more like what they moved away from).
Some people just aren't capable of being happy with rural life.

It works to an extent as animes like Non Non Biyori, Tari Tari, Hanasaku Iroha, and other animes with beautiful scenery tend to attract some fans to visit those places.

I guess that is at least a step in the direction of their goal.
If enough people are interested in going to visit, then tourism could help the economies of the rural areas, which would help make them more attractive to people thinking about moving away from the cities.

Um, this isn't really about tourism, so much as getting folks to migrate and join the rural labor force. Tourists don't harvest rice or milk cows.
Anyway, looks like it's coming up to speed. First two episodes were nice, but the third had me laughing a lot at the antics.
