Thread: Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom (v.2.0)

  1. Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom (v.2.0)

Hi again, Hongfire! Some of you might remember me from Eternal Eclipse (RMVX). It's been a long time since I last had the motivation to make a game. Recently, someone asked if I was still doing the game captioned "Prepare for war!". Because of that, I had an immediate idea (and motivation) to work on a new game. And the result: it's Liberty: Heart of the Kingdom!

Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom is a free and indie RPG game developed using RPG Maker VX Ace, and will remain as such until duly noted.

    Story:
"Garesina, a prosperous land governed by four great kingdoms: Arnotha to the north, Tesa to the east, Westvalley to the west, and Hotus to the south. Many years of peace brought about the right to rule over all of Garesina. They say the king of Hotus went mad and began an undeclared war towards Arnotha, Tesa and Westvalley. In such a short time Tesa and Westvalley fell under Hotus' rule, and it was a matter of time before Arnotha falls as well. But, driven perhaps by his own self-inflicted madness or the bearings of his conscience, the king of Hotus suddenly stopped the assault towards the last kingdom. Tesa and Westvalley was soon reclaimed by Arnotha and took to their side as Hotus fell completely. As the loser of the war, Hotus was stripped of its title as one of the Great Kingdoms and was forbidden such rule over Garesina. They are now nothing more but a pebble swept away in the sands, a forgotten beauty who can no longer show itself to the world. Many had wondered what the king of Hotus was thinking, declaring war with reason only those who knew him would know, and then retreating from the final hour of victory. They had deemed him mad, but no one ever saw the king after the fall of Hotus. I have been among the participants of the war, for he had potential. I had followed his triumphs and shared his loses. But I too hold my doubts as to why he would retreat in a war he could easily win. Perhaps the mind of humans are too clouded in mystery that we elves could not ever understand. Now, twenty years after the Great War, a dark cloud hovers over Garesina. It could not be seen by humans, but I hold the power to see of what is about to come. The dark cloud grows near, and our goddess, Sylvia, warns that not even our combined forces among all the races that exist within Garesina could possibly defeat such evil. Only through the hands of a legend known to us and a few humans can stop the spread of evil from Garesina and the rest of the world. The time has come. It is our sole duty as elves, in cases where evil is at its greatest, to scatter throughout our governed lands and find the bringer of hope, the savior of the masses, the destroyer of evil. It is our duty to find The One Who Holds Destiny."

Worried about replaying from the start?
Those who have previously played the old HotK, the saved games will not work here, as the entire game has been remade from nearly nothing. There are also a lot of changes to the entire system, so you get the idea.

In case you're wondering what I might be doing with Heart of the Kingdom, or want to check on its progress, or just curious enough to look, here's where you can find updates about the game:

Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom blog site

Detailed overview of the changes in HotK v.2.0:
    Spoiler

    Storyline:
The storyline in the previous version was somewhat dense (hell, I didn't even have a name for the land they were set in). So I had a few suggestions from different people and finally came up with a better one. With Garesina as its world setting, players can now indulge in the story if they want. Many changes were made to how the story goes, which can be noticed from the very beginning of v.2.0. As you progress you may notice them, as there were actually many scenes that never got the spotlight on the old version. Here, you will get more stories (which means more adult scenes, yay!). Also, I've given the Neutral Characters of the old HotK their own stories, which means they are now officially a part of the new HotK.

    Characters:
I've overhauled all of the available Heroes' skill system. Now, they gain skills on specific levels, and begin with two new skills; a Passive and an Ultimate. Passive skills are always active and can only be viewed from outside of battle. Ultimate skills require 100 TP to use, but some characters can use these skills freely on some conditions. Here are their detailed descriptions:

    - Selina
Selina, as we know, is the primary semi-tanker with passive healing, which makes her a bit overpowered in battles. In v.2.0, she loses the ability to regenerate health. Instead, she gains the passive ability to enter Guard state when receiving a basic attack. Her Execution skill, which is perhaps her strongest attack (deals more damage the lower the target's HP is), is now her Ultimate skill and requires 100 TP to use. At Lv. 27, she gains her final ability, Berserk. When her HP drops below 30%, she enters Berserk, which boosts her damage by 500%, but drops her defense to zero. This is automatically triggered.

    - Rishel
Rishel has trouble with magic, because most of her magic attacks deal physical damage. In v.2.0, she gains her very own set of elemental attacks that deal magic damage. She receives the passive skill Conduction, which allows her to obtain the element she receives from taking elemental damage. With an elemental buff, she can use a magic attack based on her elemental buff. She still retains her final ability Tempest Blade, which deals magic damage and reduces the target's resistance to elemental damage.

    - Deryll
Deryll, some people mistook as a thief but is actually a trickster (which explains why he has no Steal ability), was given a damage boost with his passive skill Weaken Defense, causing his attacks to lower the target's defense. He also has the ability to act twice in a turn by chance. His Ultimate skill Glass Vision boosts his attack rate and lowers enemy aggression. This gives him a better chance of fighting against stronger opponents later on. His final ability allows him to act twice (or thrice if he gains a second chance passively) and causes his basic attack to hit twice. This makes him a very agile character to put on the field and can lock down a single enemy with ease, considering his speed-enhancing buffs, hit-reduction skills and the dreaded Shadow Web.

    Gameplay:
As usual, the gameplay revolves around a mix of RPG and RTS. What's good about it is that you no longer need Blueprints to build Structures, since they will unlock at certain points in the story. The use of Farms and Food is no longer used, which makes old players focus on Gold and Wood production instead. Also, the Mill and Quarry can now be upgraded to yield higher Gold and Wood income. Units now deal different amounts of damage when attacking the enemy camp, the same goes for Heroes. The world map interaction has also been altered, making it easier for players to travel between places. The ability to improve relationsips has also been renewed. Simply check for yourself.

    Hints and Tips:
    Spoiler

    - In Cursor Mode, make sure you build a Lumber Mill and Quarry. These are essential structures for resource production.
    - Press [A] on the keyboard to build Structures and [S] to build Defenses during Cursor Mode. You cannot build if:
    * you are not in Cursor Mode
    * you do not have enough resources
    - Upgrade your Mills and Quarries to improve their production rate.
    - Building multiples of Lumber Mill and Quarry significantly increases your resource production rate.
    - Build the Guild House to control which Hero you wish to call in, dismiss or resurrect. You can also buy potions at a lower cost.
    - Build as much Watchtowers when you have time (and resources).
    - The more units you have, the more damage you deal towards enemy buildings. Each unit can deal different amounts of damage.
    - Make use of each unit's strengths and compensate their weaknesses.

Here are some screenshots, as requested. These are from the old game, but they will also exist in the new version.

  3. @SythmanG:

Thanks. I was actually thinking about this concept for some time after playing Evil Seeds (a little extreme, but nice). I even have a copy of it in my hard drive still.

Also, the release of the next chapter is on Friday (here in our time zone, at least). I'll update the necessary posts when the next chapter is released.

I plan on releasing a new version once one chapter is done. For this version, expect the plot to reveal itself in due time. Stay tuned!

  5. Alright, I finished 1.0.1a
Combat flows quite well with the streamlining improvements since last version
I noticed an issue, during the refugee camp mission, attacking the enemy camp just one time actually ends up doing infinite attacks instead. In effect locking up the game for about a minute until either your camp or theirs dies from damage. Other strategic levels don't do that

  6. OK - first off I must say this is engaging and well written, and I am looking forward to see how this progresses. However, I feel stupid for asking, but how does one build something? I've gone through the demo and chapter 1 up to the refugee camp attack, but still haven't figured out how to build anything. Garden, quarry, guild house, etc. What mode am I supposed to be in? I've tried several times in different parts of the game and different modes (including cursor) , have the resources i.e. lumber, money, etc, open the menu and select something from essentials, but nothing happens. What am I missing?

during the mode where you have a base and you move around a black cursor icon, you need to hover over an empty spot and press the letter A to bring up a list of your materials and then the build menu.
you can see the costs in your inventory (check the essentials category)
this is explained in the tutorial where you defend the initial town from wolf horde (did you skip the explanation?)

  8. are there any consequence on giving or not the flower at the "Lonely Woman" in Kafran?

  9. Missed the hitting the letter "A" part...

  10. @ MrTTAO: I'm glad the battle has gone smooth since the demo. I'll see about the refugee assault, I quite noticed it but I didn't pay attention because I was attacking the camp for nine seconds, then realized the attack was taking too long for nine seconds. I'll work on that.

@ seyfer: Giving the flower to the Lonely Woman rewards you with Credits. If you didn't give it to her, you get to keep the flower with mysterious effects (as stated in the item description). I wonder what might happen...

@ everyone: Did everyone get the special item from Eunice after Elixe's assault?

EDIT to MrTTAO's reply: I just fixed it! The fix will be included in the next chapter's release, with other compensation packages.

I don't quite remember, what special item?

    Spoiler
also, I found a secret room with a secret girl near the castle, so far the only thing I can do is give her food but that does not do anything. is she going to be implemented later? or do i need to find a specific food item to progress with her?

  12. Three armlets of liberty - a decent buff until you can get the survivor's ring
