Thread: Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom (v.2.0)

  1. Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom (v.2.0)

Hi again, Hongfire! Some of you might remember me from Eternal Eclipse (RMVX). It's been a long time since I last had the motivation to make a game. Recently, someone asked if I was still doing the game captioned "Prepare for war!". Because of that, I had an immediate idea (and motivation) to work on a new game. And the result: it's Liberty: Heart of the Kingdom!

Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom is a free and indie RPG game developed using RPG Maker VX Ace, and will remain as such until duly noted.

    Story:
"Garesina, a prosperous land governed by four great kingdoms: Arnotha to the north, Tesa to the east, Westvalley to the west, and Hotus to the south. Many years of peace brought about the right to rule over all of Garesina. They say the king of Hotus went mad and began an undeclared war towards Arnotha, Tesa and Westvalley. In such a short time Tesa and Westvalley fell under Hotus' rule, and it was a matter of time before Arnotha falls as well. But, driven perhaps by his own self-inflicted madness or the bearings of his conscience, the king of Hotus suddenly stopped the assault towards the last kingdom. Tesa and Westvalley was soon reclaimed by Arnotha and took to their side as Hotus fell completely. As the loser of the war, Hotus was stripped of its title as one of the Great Kingdoms and was forbidden such rule over Garesina. They are now nothing more but a pebble swept away in the sands, a forgotten beauty who can no longer show itself to the world. Many had wondered what the king of Hotus was thinking, declaring war with reason only those who knew him would know, and then retreating from the final hour of victory. They had deemed him mad, but no one ever saw the king after the fall of Hotus. I have been among the participants of the war, for he had potential. I had followed his triumphs and shared his loses. But I too hold my doubts as to why he would retreat in a war he could easily win. Perhaps the mind of humans are too clouded in mystery that we elves could not ever understand. Now, twenty years after the Great War, a dark cloud hovers over Garesina. It could not be seen by humans, but I hold the power to see of what is about to come. The dark cloud grows near, and our goddess, Sylvia, warns that not even our combined forces among all the races that exist within Garesina could possibly defeat such evil. Only through the hands of a legend known to us and a few humans can stop the spread of evil from Garesina and the rest of the world. The time has come. It is our sole duty as elves, in cases where evil is at its greatest, to scatter throughout our governed lands and find the bringer of hope, the savior of the masses, the destroyer of evil. It is our duty to find The One Who Holds Destiny."

Worried about replaying from the start?
Those who have previously played the old HotK, the saved games will not work here, as the entire game has been remade from nearly nothing. There are also a lot of changes to the entire system, so you get the idea.

In case you're wondering what I might be doing with Heart of the Kingdom, or want to check on its progress, or just curious enough to look, here's where you can find updates about the game:

Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom blog site

Detailed overview of the changes in HotK v.2.0:
    Spoiler

    Storyline:
The storyline in the previous version was somewhat dense (hell, I didn't even have a name for the land they were set in). So I had a few suggestions from different people and finally came up with a better one. With Garesina as its world setting, players can now indulge in the story if they want. Many changes were made to how the story goes, which can be noticed from the very beginning of v.2.0. As you progress you may notice them, as there were actually many scenes that never got the spotlight on the old version. Here, you will get more stories (which means more adult scenes, yay!). Also, I've given the Neutral Characters of the old HotK their own stories, which means they are now officially a part of the new HotK.

    Characters:
I've overhauled all of the available Heroes' skill system. Now, they gain skills on specific levels, and begin with two new skills; a Passive and an Ultimate. Passive skills are always active and can only be viewed from outside of battle. Ultimate skills require 100 TP to use, but some characters can use these skills freely on some conditions. Here are their detailed descriptions:

    - Selina
Selina, as we know, is the primary semi-tanker with passive healing, which makes her a bit overpowered in battles. In v.2.0, she loses the ability to regenerate health. Instead, she gains the passive ability to enter Guard state when receiving a basic attack. Her Execution skill, which is perhaps her strongest attack (deals more damage the lower the target's HP is), is now her Ultimate skill and requires 100 TP to use. At Lv. 27, she gains her final ability, Berserk. When her HP drops below 30%, she enters Berserk, which boosts her damage by 500%, but drops her defense to zero. This is automatically triggered.

    - Rishel
Rishel has trouble with magic, because most of her magic attacks deal physical damage. In v.2.0, she gains her very own set of elemental attacks that deal magic damage. She receives the passive skill Conduction, which allows her to obtain the element she receives from taking elemental damage. With an elemental buff, she can use a magic attack based on her elemental buff. She still retains her final ability Tempest Blade, which deals magic damage and reduces the target's resistance to elemental damage.

    - Deryll
Deryll, some people mistook as a thief but is actually a trickster (which explains why he has no Steal ability), was given a damage boost with his passive skill Weaken Defense, causing his attacks to lower the target's defense. He also has the ability to act twice in a turn by chance. His Ultimate skill Glass Vision boosts his attack rate and lowers enemy aggression. This gives him a better chance of fighting against stronger opponents later on. His final ability allows him to act twice (or thrice if he gains a second chance passively) and causes his basic attack to hit twice. This makes him a very agile character to put on the field and can lock down a single enemy with ease, considering his speed-enhancing buffs, hit-reduction skills and the dreaded Shadow Web.

    Gameplay:
As usual, the gameplay revolves around a mix of RPG and RTS. What's good about it is that you no longer need Blueprints to build Structures, since they will unlock at certain points in the story. The use of Farms and Food is no longer used, which makes old players focus on Gold and Wood production instead. Also, the Mill and Quarry can now be upgraded to yield higher Gold and Wood income. Units now deal different amounts of damage when attacking the enemy camp, the same goes for Heroes. The world map interaction has also been altered, making it easier for players to travel between places. The ability to improve relationsips has also been renewed. Simply check for yourself.

    Hints and Tips:
    Spoiler

    - In Cursor Mode, make sure you build a Lumber Mill and Quarry. These are essential structures for resource production.
    - Press [A] on the keyboard to build Structures and [S] to build Defenses during Cursor Mode. You cannot build if:
    * you are not in Cursor Mode
    * you do not have enough resources
    - Upgrade your Mills and Quarries to improve their production rate.
    - Building multiples of Lumber Mill and Quarry significantly increases your resource production rate.
    - Build the Guild House to control which Hero you wish to call in, dismiss or resurrect. You can also buy potions at a lower cost.
    - Build as much Watchtowers when you have time (and resources).
    - The more units you have, the more damage you deal towards enemy buildings. Each unit can deal different amounts of damage.
    - Make use of each unit's strengths and compensate their weaknesses.

Here are some screenshots, as requested. These are from the old game, but they will also exist in the new version.

  3. Just noticed a major error somewhere in the Academy. At the second floor, there's a large hallway leading to Azure Mother, but will not trigger event unless you walk over the leftmost part. It's supposed to have all three covered, but because I was lacking sleep that time I didn't notice it until last night. Please make sure that, to move past the Academy, walk to the leftmost path of the grwat hall on the second floor. I'll get a fixed version up as soon as I get my hands on an internet connection.

EDIT: Just got the MEGA version updated with the fix.

  4. You should really increment the version when you release a bugfix release
if you don't want to increase the number, add an additional one. like 1.0.3.1 or 1.0.3b

  5. Ok I got to ask. Has anyone figured out how to open up that box in the regent gathering quest?

It keeps telling me it's a very weird box and it won't open. I can't even leave the dungeun to save and try later so the game is sitting minimized so I don't lose progress...

  6. The box in that area, as well as other boxes such as the one after finishing the Lover's Dungeon quest and another in the area where you found Veneia, are special boxes that contain a useful equipment for a specific character, which you can only get after clearing a specific dungeon.

Hint: the dungeon I'm referring to is already available from Chapter 1, but can only be found by buying a certain item for a certain price.

  7. Ah interesting so the box is not the trick to getting out of this forest. Hmmm ok. Will keep walking around hitting enter. I killed all the sprites and can't find any additional map or anything to go to while collecting regents.

  9. Nice game so far though did notice a few bugs along the way.

    V 1.0.3
Justin fights at the very beginning then never again and refuses to go anywhere alone. No one in the party cares that he sits out every battle? And throughout the game doesn't level up once....
    LV 1 HP 345 MP 124

EXP and Money are very rare... Earning less then 1 exp per battle really isn't practical and money seems to be scarce in kind

"We still have to take care of something..." blocks path without stating cause, perhaps add a line as what trigger(s) are preventing access. ie: Can not return to village till (condition) is completed. Or I have a feeling we should be at (location) looking for (condition).

Rishel ( and most others) barely increase 7 fold from level 1 to 99 and still have problems dealing with common enemies in the game...
    LV 1 - 0 EXP HP 279 MP 138 ATK 4 DEF 3 MAG 16 RES 14 AGI 5 LUK 4
    LV 2 - 35 EXP HP 298 MP 145 ATK 5 DEF 4 MAG 17 RES 15 AGI 6 LUK 5
    LV 3 - 97 EXP HP 317 MP 152 ATK 5 DEF 4 MAG 18 RES 16 AGI 6 LUK 5
    LV 4 - 200 EXP HP 335 MP 158 ATK 5 DEF 4 MAG 19 RES 17 AGI 6 LUK 5
    LV 5 - 355 EXP HP 354 MP 165 ATK 5 DEF 4 MAG 20 RES 18 AGI 6 LUK 5
    ---
    LV 99 - 581621 EXP HP 2108 MP 784 ATK 28 DEF 25 MAG 93 RES 88 AGI 23 LUK 23

Deryll the thief without the ability to steal...

PUBs are empty... The one pub with people an the only thing happens when you try to talk to the npcs is "Best not to cause any trouble..."

Must return to Elixe whenever you want to change party members or formation. Though later Formation can be changed from Bellwinter Fort south entrance or special battles.

Can't use Food Items to up stats even though that is what description implies. Even if food is only for Amenisa giving her 100 grapes should net +100 LUK to her starting stats. Also an indication as to how much food you given her would be nice... Even Cid from Final Fantasy 6 gave indication he was getting healthier with tasty fish and sicker with yucky fish.

After you add Amenisa to your party she doesn't disappear from her room however stops walking if you speak to her again the event of her choosing a job resets and locks you in a room with no one to talk to.

If you go to Hotus and use the statue to teleport to Kafran you can smuggle Deryll into Kafran. No one in town cares about Deryll which makes it more odd that he won't enter the town.

Why this statue only teleports from Kafran to Hotus I don't know as this would save walking when new towns where found...

Bellwinter Fort has a formation menu on the south side but not on the north side

Having a formation menu accessible from the main menu would be nice as even with a large party it is not possible to change formation without taking everyone to a special place... Only those in active combat party gain exp.

In Dolfre, Manager will sell you a lucky small box. Using box will get you Fey, which can not equip anything or has any skills.... practically dead weight

If you acquire Fey with only Justin in the party she will be added however will not have a formation set so if you go into a dangerous place a battle can start but without an active party will end and cause a loop. Not a game breaking loop but its hard to escape from an enemy you can't fight that wants to fight with every fiber in its being.

In Bellwinter Sarah will say "Its just you and me now" even if Amenisa and Fey are present in the party

In Bellwinter when Mei offers special service no option to give money for said service

In Bellwinters weapon shop, every item is its own merchant... not consistent with other item shops where the npc behind the counter handles all inventory.

In Bellwinter if Mei is to enter the whore house alone Fey and Amenisa will still be in the party. An option to acquire whore house after the event was done would have also been nice

Bellwinter Forest Mischievous Fairies have insane evasion stats putting Fey's stats to shame... Fey should be able to learn [Pixie Bolt] as even at level 30 she can barely deal -6 damage to Mischievous Fairies while they can hit her for -50. Also killed 200 (10 to the cave then 10 back 10 times over) without seeing Fairy Dust, the option to steal this item would be preferred or some item to help increase the drop rate of ultra rare items... It currently isn't practical to farm this item. Perhaps after killing 20 mischievous Fairies spans a Mother Fairy that has a better drop rate? That would at least make 1 Fairy Dust for every dungeon crawl... If the woman with the Fairy Dust addiction offers anything less then herself it currently is not worth it. A skill/item to scan an enemy to see if they have anything worth stealing/dropping along with HP remaining would also be nice!

A kill tracker would also be nice as I wonder how much Fairy blood I spilled upon the land.

An accessory to prevent [Sleep] would be better then Strong Perfume as Mischievous Fairies use Sleep Dust causes the whole party to sleep

After saving Campers in Bellwinter Forest in their cave are 2 chest that can't be opened do to beds being in the way. Unlike other beds you can not walk on them... From pattern probably contain 2 Strong Perfumes not to useful as noted above

At the start of Chapter 3 when the party is disbanded Fey is nowhere to be found thus can not be returned to party... Perhaps some in game list stating where acquired party members are located.

Kalifi is only able to equip accessories... Even an option for light armour is better then nothing

In Denre the PUB is mislabeled as an INN. Or this is the first labeled INN you can not sleep in as the INN in Dolfre isn't labeled.

In Denre an Old Man wants Fairy Dust... Merchants should sell that instead of Fairy Tears

The Ruined House can be completed before you even know who Emily is. Taking Emily to the Ruined Orphanage does nothing. Room on the second floor with little chest has some teleport problem as all other rooms will teleport once then allow entry.

Broken Doll burial seems odd as there is a Doll Shop in town, they don't like to fix dolls?

Escape Stone would be more useful if it only teleported to the entrance of a dungeon instead of all the way to Elixe village.

After Cleire is acquired the old man at the alchemy shop stops selling items or talking for that matter

Nefrim is the one elf sister without pointy ears compaired to Herminoe and Veneia

Elven village really doesn't have any Item/Weapon Shops, PUBs, or INNs.. All the NPCs only state "Observe rules and regulations while you're here." must be a cult.. Also no special herbs aka weed was found in said village contrary to what Cleire mentioned

East side of the Sandoras Magic Academy is devoid of people... Not even a door greater or guard to keep the students in

90 Wild Meats when given to the cook at the Sandoras Magic Academy nets Fairy Dust... A lone tear just trickled down my face.... Cook says she wants equal portions of Meats and Vegetables but only takes the meat.

Azure Mother stated precicly what she wanted and the screen fades to black...

Zombie has a weakness to Meteor Assault but all attacks are nulled. Most Area of Effect magic isn't that useful on hords of the undead...

Calling In Party Members doesn't do much if you can not change the Formation

Can not call in Fey or Amenisa once acquired

Rangers look nice but temporary party members at level 1 aren't that useful... Perhaps have them created with the average level of the party then an option to deploy the temp army to the field

A Status option to show what upgrades have been done to the temp camp would be nice

    Till Chapter IV

  10. It's a little sad to say that, due to some unforeseen events that took place during the past weeks, Liberty - Heart of the Kingdom will be temporarily postponed in its release. You can read about what happened at the blog site for details.

Downloads will still be available, as I'll need it for reference some time later.

I'm really sorry for those who have been waiting for Chapter IV. I'll get back to working (or re-working) on it as soon as I can.
