Hey guys,

So I've got a friend who will be taking an exchange trip to southern Japan starting in April [the lucky bee-yotch]. She wants to buy an iPhone that she can use while abroad but they're a lot cheaper in the States, and she's limited on money she can spend.

Basically she wants to be able to buy an iPhone here in the States but have it accept a SIM card for Japanese cell networks. This way she can use it while she's overseas and when she comes back in August she can switch back to our cell networks here and still use the phone.

So yeah, I kind of just need some background understanding of how this works so she can get a phone that we know for sure will work for her when she leaves for her exchange trip. If anyone here travels regularly between the US and Japan and has a iPhone I would appreciate it if you could share your experience and any advice you may have. Thanks in advance!
