    HDD space issue

Was looking for files to delete as the hard drive is getting full. But i noticed a discrepancy in total usage showing that i only have 4gb left out my hdd while i look into the properties inside E: and there is about almost 40gb unaccounted for any idea why?

In short, some of the discrepancy is due to file system overhead (the OS has to have metadata like filenames, what parts of the disk belong to which file, and so forth), as well as slack space due to the cluster size. All files take up the next largest multiple of the drive's cluster size (usually 4 kilobytes on NTFS), so if your file is only one byte it will occupy at 4K, and slack space amounts to 4095 bytes. A file with exactly 10000 bytes will occupy three clusters (12,288 bytes), and so waste 2288 bytes. The filesystem metadata the system uses to keep track of which clusters on a drive belong to which files takes up space as well, and folders are additional collections of the same type of metadata. They can add up to quite a bit if you have a lot of files or large files.

Well I guess that solves the discrepancies in the HDD . Thanks a lot for replying.

  5. First thing I suggest you do first to free up some space is to use the disc cleanup program as there's likely to be a metric whack load of temp files, system restore points and other crap using up space on it (you would have to run the scan process twice as the first run doesn't scan everything and you have to click the scan system files (I think that is the button) button to scan the rest and to give you the option to clear out all by the most recent restore point).

A 40GB discrepancy? Doesn't sound like file system overhead. Not with just 200k files on a 300GB drive. You'd need, I don't know, something in the range of maybe a few hundred million files on a much bigger drive to get anywhere near those dimensions ^^

My guess would be that this is your system drive, so there's two distinctive possibilities: virtual RAM (you can check this in advanced system settings or whatever it's called in English), although that really shouldn't be 40GB either, but maybe another 5-10GB and ... not emptying your recycle bin, I suppose ;p
