The island of Tristia was once an important port city for maritime trade. A veritable jewel of the ocean where merchants, sailors and travelers flocked to for its booming commerce. That was before the dragons attacked and destroyed the city. Although the citizens have worked hard to rebuild, setbacks occurred which plunged Tristia deeper into despair. In an emergency plea for help, the people of Tristia send an urgent communiqué to the legendary inventor Prospero Flanka for his aid in reviving the fortunes of the city. The Tristians wait for Prospero anxiously but when the fateful day arrives, it is not he who appears but his 14 year-old grand daughter Nanoka, a highly skilled inventor in her own right.
Spur the redevelopment of Tristia and reverse the decline of once powerful city. In concert with a golem named Tenzan that she created, Nanoka retrieves parts and ingredients to create new items for sale that may empower the commerce and financial resiliency of Tristia. Streets in the city of Tristia grow and change depending on how Nanoka researches, invents, and produces items during the course of the game. Once an item is marketable, Nanoka may sell it to a shop which will then widen the streets of Tristia as income rolls in and improvements are made. Nanoka is not the only inventor in town and rivals such as Panavia Tornado, and Faury Carat (yes, they're named after fighter jets) also compete for acclaim and rewards.
The golems in Tristia bear no resemblance to the clay creature crafted by Rabbi Judah Loew but are metal mecha which do their master's bidding and are also used for battle in competitions. When Nanoka is in the workshop, her pup may be lying nearby while the oven pipes out bits of steam when baking her next big invention. Nanoka's golem will stand in the corner, waiting at her beck and call. When traveling, the town is viewed from an overhead isometric view where scores of bustling citizens walk around frantically (like the customers in the PDA game Lemonade or perhaps an army of ants desperate to go somewhere...anywhere) while Nanoka may choose where she wants to go by using a ruby colored pointer to designate which building to enter. The foot traffic at the outset of the game is light but as Nanoka produces more products, more people rush through the streets as the city gradually returns to its former glory.
Conversations with fellow travellers and merchants take place on a single screen where Nanoka's dialogue is shown on the upper portion and the merchant is shown on the bottom. Full voice acting is used for the characters in the game and even Nanoka's dog speaks his mind with a deep male voice.

Travel the wilds of feudal Japan and belabor yourself to tasks and jobs set forth by erstwhile employers in need of help. As a traveling sword of sorts, players tackle various missions in Aizu, Osaka, and Satsuma. As your reputation and renown grows, higher level assignments will come your way.
Some battles are fought one-on-one against legendary swordsman that are encountered along the way but battles against the rabble are common. When dueling man to man, players adopt a defensive stance and strike and slash with disciplined strokes while parrying oncoming blows. Swords that meet during these encounters will sing with the din of steel and rings of illumination are not uncommon sights as the power of the blows light up the local area.
When its time to fight crowds, the defensive stance is still adopted but the swings and smashes sway a little wilder as enemy agents take their turns attacking and retreating. In order to keep things on a somewhat even keel, the enemy group never attacks en masse but rather demurely sends in a couple of warriors at a time for our hero to smite down. The others stand around and seemingly gawk.

The heroes and heroines of Marchen Awakens Romance find their true calling in Konami's fighting game where combatants battle with their powerful ARMS and conventional fighting skills. In the Marchen manga, an underdog named Ginta Toramizu is teleported into a world known as MarHeaven. He soon finds that his puny human skills on Earth are now superhuman on MarHeaven. He finds a weapon known as an ARM, meets up with comrades, and soon takes on an evil group known as Chess no Koma.

* The intro to the game shows lead character Ginta swinging a chain followed by animated shorts of the other characters in stoic stances. There's a bunch of snowmen with the fighter Snow and assorted other characters are represented in cel-shaded incarnations.

* Seven fighters are selectable at the outset of the game. Each battle starts with a short animated intro which sets up the storyline and object of conflict. In Alviss' scenario, a bandaged warrior shoots an ebon blasts at the Marchen crew and sucks all of them into large mirrors. Once trapped, they are all sent on a play board where they move and fight against various adversaries in 3D fighting action.

* Fighters in the game include Snow, Jack (with a metal shovel), Dorothy, Ginta Toramizu (main character), Loco, Ian, Gillom (purple clown), Orco (bald behemoth), Aran, Nanashi, Alviss, Halloween, Candice, and Lauren.

* The animation quality of Arm Fight Dream is exceptionally fluid. Every move that a fighter makes is almost too well executed and rendered. For example, tapping the TRIANGLE button will make Alviss, the blue-haired warrior elegantly attack with a staff while the SQUARE button pounds out a fist. The X button is used to jump and the O is another conventional punch attack. When standing close to an opponent, pressing O will have him scoot to the other side of the character where a smooth blow to the oppoent's back may be landed. L1 guards and R1 summons a special attack from a menu.

* When two fighters are toe to toe on the battlefield, they take up the entire height and almost the entire width of the screen. The animation is well done and voices mutter, exult, grumble, and roar during each battle. The crisp and clean cel-shaded visuals add to the refinement of the overall game.

As the 15th anniversary of the Yuusha (Brave) Saga series rolls around, developer Twinky Soft revisits the Brave Saga series with a new strategy RPG which features characters and robots from a number of classic Sunrise animation. In addition to striking character portraits and artwork in the game, nearly 100 voice actors were hired to perform the spoken word.
The game is played on an isometric playfield where robots moves in real time after actions are selected. Upon selecting an attack, a new window opens up over the map screen and the attack is shown in fluid detail. Special attacks are also shown where bots motor on the map and then perform animated attacks in a cut scene window. The attack then proceeds to happen on the main map screen with damage effects shown on the targeted bots. Attacks are selected from a list of available options similar to standard Super Robot Wars games. The presentation is a bit more dramatic with spinning bots, super attacks in bloom, and rampaging team attacks spooled off in dazzling sequence.

Mankind's thirst for fuel is slaked in the year 2039 when the Shizuma Drive is developed. Special interests however want energy to be metered and a powerful underground organization named Big Fire works to foil all of the Shizuma Drives not under their control. To regain the promise of free energy, a young lad named Daisaku Kusama who controls Giant Robo rushes out to combat the greed and capitalistic inclinations of Big Fire.
Take control of a monstrous robot who looks like an Egyptian god and grapple with fellow gargantuans on expansive fields of battle. The control of Giant Robo is through the use of a simulated remote controller (a wristwatch) for that Alchemic Drive and Tetsujin 28-go feeling. Players may enjoy a standard Battle Mode, a Versus Mode, and a Movie Mode where your best battles may be reviewed for posterity. The action moves at a measured pace which is fairly standard for this type of game as it conveys the feel of massive robots better. If they moved too briskly, they might give the impression of being constructed out of balsa wood rather than heavy metal. Standard attacks used by Giant Robo include powerful punches, missiles which fire from his shoulders, cannon fire which erupts from his wrists. During a battle, chunks may fall off of enemy bots which Daisaku may gather up.

Acceding to consumer demand, Broccoli and Gainax release a new Evangelion game which puts Shinji in the role of a detective. Players take on the role of Shinji Ikari who uses interrogation skills and a lackluster posture to ferret out the identity of a killer that's loose on the streets of Tokyo-3. By chaining together clues and hints culled from acquaintances and citizens, the unlikely sleuth pieces together a puzzling mystery.
At the outset of the game, Shinji emerges from an outdoor stall while sirens blare in the distance. Wandering over to investigate, he chances upon Rei Ayanami who's being held in the grips of a menacing tentacle-waving teenager. Horrified at first, Shinji musters up to courage to help his friend out. To free Rei, beat down on the attacker with punches and kicks to release an exhausted Rei from its grip. The game is mostly interactive where Shinji picks locations to visit and talks to friends and associates. The occasional action sequences and mini-games load up to break up the tedium of flick-screen game play.
To recreate the world of Evangelion on the PS2, the original voice actors from the animation series were hired to give each character speech.

» On the title screen, urgent music plays while silhouettes of familiar looking character shapes are stenciled in behind the big blue/yellow Detective Evangelion logo. The game selections are:

» Start a new game and white space appears followed by a female's voice. Gendo Ikari appears. The female voice says, "Dosan" and then screams as Gendo is shown with a big bloody pool around his head. Shinji wakes up in a sweat while bugs screech in the background. As he sits there, the familiar Evangelion theme song "A Cruel Angel's Thesis," plays as sung by Yoko Takahashi.

» The Year is 2015, April 3.
Police sirens sound in the distance as Katsuragi is seen standing on a corner in a somewhat shaken state. In the next scene, Shinji pops out in front of a clothing stand and notices the sirens. The scene shifts again to inside NERV HQ where images of bloody bodies are shown on a telescreen. Bodies of dead policemen. A strange girl with tentacles where her arms should be appears on the monitor. Shinji is shown running and he spies the tentacle girl. He's transfixed by the sight and freezes but Rei pushes him out of the way. For her helpful gesture, Rei gets smacked down by the strange girl's tentacles. As Rei recovers, the girl-creature's tentacles grab Rei. Shinji doesn't know what to do as stares at the amazing sight. Back at NERV, the crew assesses the situation. Suddenly, Shinji grows a pair and yells out a battle cry before rushing into battle.

» Control Shinji with the L-analog and punch the creature-girl by pressing the SQUARE button to land a few punches or the X button to kick. Guard against attacks by pressing the O button while the TRIANGLE button forces to him duck in a defensive posture. To grab the tentacles and pull them away for a slingshot twang, press the L2 or R2 trigger and he'll grab. If you take too long, Rei dies and the game ends. To prevent that, you'll have to attack the girl with a bunch of punches and then use the L2 and R2 to pull both of her tentacles away. After you do that to both tentacles, Shinji will pull Rei away and Katsuragi will drive into the scene and crash into the girl. She survives the impact however and leaps away and into the deserted town. Katsuragi drives after her and Shinji helps Rei while images of dead and bloody policemen may be seen in the background. An ambulance arrives and brings Rei into the infirmary at NERV.

» Meitantei Evangelion is an interactive adventure game with action sequences interspersed within the storyline. Shinji's actions are chosen from four activity boxes located on the bottom of the screen. In the early part of the town scenario, Shinji runs into his friend Kensuke Aida. As Shinji goes through the town, he'll encounter various characters and interact with them by choosing actions from the four aforementioned activity boxes. In front of the donut shop, he'll meet Hikari Horaki. While in town, he sees a girl that looks strangely like Rei Ayanami except her eyes are seemingly Kamen-Masked. He follows her into a mall where he bumps into Touji Suzuhara who is enraged temporarily. The two see the Rei-clone again and they puzzle over her appearance.

» All of the dialogue is accompanied by speech including Shinji's dialogue

Sometime in the near future, the South American rain forest serves as the backdrop of a war between two factions - those who support the Baldr governing technology and those who don't. To ensure that the skirmishes and conflicts don't expand, the BS-OSA or Baldr System - Observation Structure Army is set up to police the region. Inside the Army is a special unit known as SERR14 (Observation Structure Army South American Experimental Riot Regiment the 14th) which is comprised of elite soldiers and operatives such as Sergey Kirkland and Dullahan Cuningham.
Originally released on the PC, Baldr Bullet Equilibrium is an action-adventure which features interaction snippets that are mixed with fast-paced 2D battlefield action where mechs rumble on single-screen encounters. The game features full voice acting, updated BGM, three new introductory cinemas, and cut scenes to spice up the visual presentation. The mech that you control doesn't trudge around like a normal motorized biped but rather skates around in fluid motion whilst attacking enemy mechs that conglomerate around him like fruitflies to a slice of moldy peach. At the outset of the game, the player's mech is fitted with a gun, bombs, and missiles but a vast arsenal awaits.

» Intro: A sonar wave sweeps across a circular field before the camera switches to CG renders of mechs in flowing motion as they lock on and attack each other. The characters are shown in fast cut sequences as follows: Sergey Kirkland, Rebecca Plushenko, Fay Malinina, Stephane Bernardez, Dullahan Cuningham, Yoo YongHa, Natsumi, Carna Abitobol, and Telesia Anissina. If you allow the game to go into demo mode some more, another game introductory cinema plays which is better than the first one where the theme song is "Emphatic" by ave;new feat. C;LINE. If you let the game go on for another demo stint, a third introductory cinema will play that shows off the game play along with dramatic slow-motion attack sequences. After the third cinema plays, they'll loop and start from the first one again.

» The options on the title screen are

START / Begin a new action-packed adventure in Easy, Normal, or Hard modes.
LOAD / Resume a game from memory card save-data.
TUTORIAL / Learn the ways of proper mech handling through six lessons of non-interactive narrated action.
EXTRA / CG Gallery Mode, Sound Mode, Replay Mode, Survival Mode, Hell Mode, and Serr14 Trial (only CG MODE is available at the outset and the others must be unlocked)
CONFIG / Toggle the options and modifiers that adjust the game including difficulty level, sound volumes, message speed, and controller button configuration

» Mechs may punch an enemy and then immediately follow up with a burst of gunfire to juggle the hapless foe for a millisecond or three. It's a dynamic visual effect. Similarly, enemy mechs may be juggled by sequential punch attacks that keep the mech in the air for about a full second or two.

» Start a new game and the second cinematic demo intro begins and plays through entirely. If you've watched it before, press the START button to skip it. A male narrator parrots the text on screen which sets up the background story of Baldr Bullet Equilibrium. There's disjointed dialogue spoken by different voice actors against a black background which further sets up the story before an image of a mech appears in repose. It's a HAWS-MG model. Next, chatter between operators occurs followed by the mech being put into service. Afterwards, the third cinema introduction from earlier plays. If you've watched it already, press the START button to skip it. The Dual Shock rumbles when this version of the cinema plays in time to the gunfire and explosions.

» When the game opens up, your mech is standing to the left of the screen facing an enemy mech to the right. Throttle the mech around by pushing the L-Analog stick in any direction and watch in amazement as it zooms with fluid ease to and fro. To open gunfire on the target, press the SQUARE button and throw bombs by hitting the "O" button. Missiles with vapor trails may be launched by pressing the "X" button. After defeating the first two mechs, three more mechs thrust onto the battlefield but the white-armored leader departs, leaving two heavily armored henchmen to battle. Upon defeating the two mechs, the white-armored leader returns with a barrage of missiles, gunfire, and bombs. It's aggressive and fast so you'll have to thrust around and launch an entire arsenal at it to knock it out. After defeating the white-armored mech, it'll thrust away, leaving you alone with the wind whistling in the background. Friendlies arrive soon afterwards and the team heads back to the hangar.

» To view the complete text of the dialogue at any point in the game, press the TRIANGLE button during the interactive sequences and scroll upwards to check out the script.

» Baldr Bullet is a mix of interactive sequences, storytelling, and action-packed mech fight sequences that are enjoyable.

» The visuals of the mechs while fighting on the battlefield aren't much to look at but the draw of the Baldr Bullet games have always been the fluid controls and fast-paced action.

» To bring up the menu during interaction sequences, press the SQUARE button and an English language menu slides into view from the right side of the screen. The options are:

There's also a button to set the interactive sequences to AUTO play if so desired so that button pressing after each dialogue box is no longer required.

» An Overdrive Mode may be activated by pushing the R-Analog (R3) thumbstick. The screen will change to indicate that you're in the zone.

» The game is equal parts interactive scenarios and mech fighting action. The interactive sequences can be lengthy which makes the AUTO feature a gift for the weary. When the action starts, your mech basically moves around the forest and battles enemy mechs. After a stint, the HAWS handler returns to the hangar for more interaction.

Equal parts interactive adventure and mech shooter, Baldr Force EXE takes players through a dramatic story which is interrupted by fast-paced blasting action. Play the part of an operative who foils terrorist activities by using a powerful mecha-ship called a Shukram. The strengths in Baldr Force are the high adrenaline shooting action scenes where mechs battle other mechs in close quarters as well as wider fields of battle. Before each fight, players select the attacks that the mech will use in the encounter and assign the various weapons to each button. Each button will then perform up to four attacks which vary depending on the proximity of the enemy target. Close in for a slash attack or increase the distance for a long-range missile bombardment. A scoot move is available for closing the distance to and from an enemy. Special attacks are effected by hitting all three attack buttons to throw out monstrous blows. Over 60 types of weapons are available for customization.
At the outset of the game, a base arsenal of weapons is available to the mech cadet but heavy usage of arms will evolve new extensions and forms of base weapons. For example, using machine guns extensively leads to the evolution of the powerful gatling gun. All weapons have three gradations of intensity which are upgraded by continued use. Special attacks on the other hand are only unlocked by defeating bosses or by besting team members in one-on-one skirmishes. The amount of attacks in Baldr Force is fairly expansive but players may find themselves sticking to certain weapons in order to evolve them into the most powerful form. The variety of regular attacks when accompanied by the number of special attacks basically makes a mech an incredibly powerful one-man-army capable of throwing out massive amounts of damage on opponents by way of furious combo attacks.
New to the PS2 version of Baldr Force are full voice performances by actors and actresses.

Four innocent animals morph into exuberant girls when the Super Galdelic Hour runs. A pink bunny becomes Toko (in pink spandex), Neko hails from a purple cat, and Coco scratches like the green fox she's modeled after. Then there's the big but beautiful Kuma, a golden bear of a girl, endowed with pendulous attributes. A fifth girl named Sista appears to be the ringleader of this circus of affable stars.
The girls engage in various sports which enhance their natural wiggles and jiggles - jumping rope isn't exactly something the modest will want to engage in when body parts are already hanging loose. The other events include big glove boxing, tree chopping, a pie throwing contest, butt bumping sumo attack, and Kuru Kuru Bout which takes place on two separate pedestals. Yes, it's as goofy as it sounds but the presentation, the charming girls, the manic chattering music, and the madness of it all give Super Galdelic Hour it's mesmerizing quality. It's like a big multiple car wreck on a highway - you can't help but look and stare, bedazzled by the immensity of it all.

Detective Kyouichirou Soraku is a hack... with potential. All of 21 years old, Kyouichi lacks initiative and usually settles for smaller sleuthing jobs such as locating a pet cat or tracking down a missing bicycle. However, there are times when Kyouichi finds himself tackling substantial challenges when the occasion arises. A hefty retainer also helps to goad the slacker into working.
The interactive detective game from Idea Factory's IF MATE brand places Kyouichirou Soraku on assignment aboard a luxury cruise liner. If Kyouichi only had to deal with the comely women on board, life would be peachy but high seas and henchmen conspire to create a situation that might endanger the entire ship. In addition to Kyouichirou's detective work, he also works on the ship's maidens to possibly romance them into submission. Following the formula of previous Tantei Souraku Kyouichirou games, five sleuthing scenarios must be solved which are all tied to each other and eventually offer clues to solve the overall adventure.

The web portal Excite adds the title of "game publisher" to its credentials and their first project is an update to the Neo Geo game known as Power Instinct: Matrimelee aka Shin Gouketuji Ichizoku Toukon. The PS2 update is an excellent conversion. Shin Gouketuji Ichizoku: Bonnou Kaihou features an additional character named Angela, vibrant music, and improved graphics.
For the uninitiated, Matrimelee is a 2D fighting game where odd-lot characters battle for the dainty purple-gloved hand of Princess Sissy (the blonde with the hat). Some fighters such as White and Kanji are marriage-minded but others have their own reasons and motives for reaching the Princess.

» In the intro to the game, Princess Sissy swings and throws out invitations while images of fighters appear on cards that flip from the center of the screen. The fighters then appear flanking the centerpiece of Sissy before the title screen pops up.

Neo Geo players will notice that Angela's a new character. Unfortunately, the Rage of the Dragons character code does not work (up, up, up, up, down, down, down, left, left, right) in the PS2 version. The Sissy playable character code also does not work.

» In the first task of MISSION MODE, players have to beat Ume in a 1-round bout. Beat her and the next mission is unlocked and so on and so forth. The second mission is against Kanji and the third mission pits a player against Clara.

» After winning a match, 10 Bonnou Point Bonuses are awarded to the player which may be used to unlock cards in the Card Collection.

» Every fighter has a double jump. Simply press up for the first lift and then press up again in mid-air to vault a little higher.

» To view the moves for a fighter while in battle, press START and tap into the COMMAND LIST.

» On a Dual Shock 2 pad, only the D-pad may be used for movement. L-Analog is out.

» The backgrounds of the stages make for some interesting sights - there's one stage where a concert is in progress while heavy metal music throttles and growls. If you look at the crowd to the right and left of the band, two separate quartets of overly energetic sumo are rocking out. The crowd in the background all wave light sticks. In another stage, a male and a female are singing karaoke while spotlights waver around them. If you watch them sing, they'll take turns and the song that plays matches their participation perfectly, including the parts when both are singing. There's no crowd in the bar but a guy seated right next to the stage flips through a magazine and a guy in a shirt and tie to the right of the stage seems to be pecking away at a portable game.

» Similar to the Japanese Neo Geo version of Matrimelee, the soundtrack of the game is well done with many songs that features vocals. There's a Euromix bent to the tracks. During the game, the songs are drowned out by the din of punches, yelling, and yelps from the fighters. To listen to the song without accompanying sound effects, simply pause the game and the volume of the song automatically rises and you may listen to the entire song as is.

» After the sixth round, Sissy sends Bobby against a player. Bobby is a black boxer with a charming smile who decks with a silhouette extension attack, knocks into opponents with his butt, throws an electrifying punch, and prances around like a butterfly. If you're knocked down, he'll run up at you and kick you again. He can also power up a streaming laser which lasts for a few seconds and fills up the local area. If you're caught in the blast late in a round, it's pretty much over. If you beat Bobby, you'll meet Sissy and enjoy a short cinematic sequence followed by the game's credits.

» The fighting runs fast and fluid for a comparable experience to the Neo Geo original. The sound is commendable with vibrant music and sound effects that thump through the speakers. Although Matrimelee won't be known much outside the Neo Geo fanbase and the players who pick up a copy from the pitifully small print run for the PS2 version, the game is a worthy fighter that's unique in the oddities found within. Where else do geriatric seniors battle young'uns in vicious fisticuffs? Grandma Tane throws out her teeth as a bouncing projectile, Grandpa Kanji whips out his underwear sash as a weapon and battles nearly in the nude. Only when he wins does he put on a red robe. Clara has a move where she can magically transform her opponent into a golden duck. Olof can perform a multi-hit kick attack where he kicks from one side and then from the other to rob 1/3 of one's health bar for a total of 14 kicks. Although newcomer Angela looks like a female in her portrait, she looks like a man with a blue wig in-game. Her punches are so powerful that they'll take out significant amounts of health from opponents if they connect. Her voice is also strangely manly.

Interact with literal angels and girls in a flick-screen adventure game which mixes conversation material with a bevy of enjoyable mini-games. The animation sequences are well done with smooth cuts and fluid motion as the protagonist contorts his face into comical shapes, mixes it up with the girls, suffocates himself between breasts, and generally acts like a clown.
Mini-games include catch action where a gal drops fish and books from a house, a split-screen track 'n field game, using a net to bag girls as they pop out from behind bushes, a baseball sim, and a concentration card game where matches of gals are found amidst cards.

The popular Dokapon board game hits the PS2 in an updated version where players choose an onscreen avatar from possible archetypes such as soldier, magician, cleric, and thief. One is not relegated to a single profession however and jobs may be changed as the game progresses. Character mobility is decided by spinning a roulette which determines the range of your next move. As one roams the board, monster encounters prevail where one fights in order to progress further. Other board spaces open up other events and locations such as shops, bonuses, mini-games, and other random happenings. Special encounters where the outcome is decided by rock-scissors-paper matches also pop up from time to time. Special items which are not available through other means may be won from such chance battles. There are three possibilities for every battle - a win where the spoils go to the victor, a surrender where items and coins are lost, and death where the character wakes up in a church sans possessions but ready for another go.

Edgy detective Jinguuji Saburo goes on the hunt once again in a new adventure which explores the seedy underbelly of Shinjuku Kabuki-cho.
As the game begins, we learn that Yoko Misoni, Saburo's invaluable assistant, has left the firm. Even a tough guy like Jinguuji feels the pain and misses his former employee. Despite the pangs, Saburo trudges ahead with cases and detective work. The new scenario in Kind of Blue places the super sleuth on assignment against a crime boss and on the hunt for a missing singer from a local jazz bar. As usual, portly police detective Sanzo Kumano provides support and advice during the course of the game.
Similar to previous Saburo games, copious amounts of interaction, clues gathering and exploration are par for the course. The game mixes together live action with crisp artwork to embolden the visuals with a unique style and presentation. When it's time to wind down from a long day of sleuthing, Saburo may mosey on down and perch himself on a bar stool at the local watering hole. While there, Saburo may play Indian Poker with the barmaids or throw darts to occupy his time.

An isolated island kingdom located at the end of the world has resisted outside influence for 2000 years. Content to look inward instead of interacting with the world around them, the ruling family of Emunit has created a sheltered paradise for its denizens. That's about to change.
A military nation on the warpath has begun a campaign to usurp the power of its neighbors and rule the world under one crest. The warmongers encounter unexpected resistance when they reach the shores of Emunit. To repel the impending invasion, Prince Kain and a loyal warrior named Enjyu marshal a party of adventurers to travel outside of Emunit and conquer the kingdoms around them.
Spectral Gene fits into the strategy RPG genre where movement and attacks are handled through a simple menu-based system. For example, the first battle in the game pits Enjyu against two slime creatures. Move her to the side or behind a slime and gain a tactical advantage by blind-siding the beast. Special attacks are also available where multiple strikes are ignited against an enemy to destroy it within one turn.

» The intro to the game features hard rocking music with muted vocal distortions. The characters are introduced by way of beautiful artwork panels and character cut-outs.
» The title screen features the game logo pasted on top of a blue tinted screen which features a slow rotating disc in the background that spans the entire sky. The selections on the title screen are:

» Start a new game and clanging sounds may be heard above the din of a crowd. A helmeted warrior in red appears followed by a helmeted warrior wearing blue. They're fighting for the crowd which roars in approval. The blue-haired Prince Kain appears followed by Enjyu. In the next scene, the sky turns red and a shaft of light pierces through the heavens. Things are about to change for the land of Emunit.
» Voice acting accompanies the dialogue in the game.
» If you wish to fast forward through the dialogue sequences, press the "TRIANGLE" button and you'll breeze through them. To simply automate the forwarding of the interaction sequences, press the "SQUARE" button and you wont have to press the "O" button when prompted.
» After the lengthy introductory sequence, players take control of a silver-haired girl named Enjyu and her mission is to defeat two purple slime-type creatures. Use either the D-pad or L-Analog pad to move the cursor and press the "O" button when its over the heroine. A menu containing six options will appear. They translate to:

2) Attack and Special Attack
3) Special Skill
4) Use Item
5) View Stats
6) Change the order of battle

» To adjust the camera, move the R-Analog pad to zoom in/out and rotate the game world to your liking. Pressing the R2-Trigger changes the camera angle. Pressing L2 overlays a grid over the battlefield and pressing either L1 or L2 targets the next enemy.
» After each move, you'll select the direction that the character faces. Battles are fought in the same fashion as FF Tactics and its ilk where movement and attacks are coordinated in turn-based fashion. Attacking an enemy from the side (+15% advantage) or the back (+30% advantage) increases the amount of damage. The purple slimes attack by throwing energy spheres and jumping on top of their targets.
» In the first battle, it started raining in the game world which doesn't seem to affect the attack strength of our heroine although rain does appear to limit mobility and range of movement. An umbrella will also appear on the status circle located in the upper right corner of the screen.
» The date at the outset of the game is January 1, 1023 and the hero starts off with 10,000G and earns another 1730 which is added to the coffers.
» The 29 other kingdoms and principalities on the world map are indicated by red discs, three of which are linked to the player's island by way of reddish ley lines of sorts. The player's own nation is on a blue disc to distinguish it from the others. The island sits to the leftmost portion of the world, isolated from the others
» The next battle pits five of your party members against three land goldfish, three green canine-like creatures, and two purple orcs of some kind. This battle demonstrates the combo attacks that the monsters can perform to triple the amount of damage impacted in each strike.
» To conquer the kingdom immediately to the right of Emunit, send the party of five and take them out. The force isn't strong and are easily beaten.
» The order of movement is shown on the top of the screen where character and monster portraits are queued up.
