While DBZ and sailor moon definitely got me watching anime, it wasn't until Inuyasha that I actually decided to make Anime my obsession.
Basically, I love Canine characters. If you know of any Anime's with canine characters, or a story that revolves around canines. Help me out and suggest it, 'kay?
And, if your likewise and love canine characters, maybe you'll benefit from this thread!
List of known canine Anime/Manga that I have watched/am watching, and would recommend.
WARNING: Most spoiler tags contain large pictures, I would personally recommend closing them after viewing.
Inuyasha - The protagonist is a dog demon.(half) who must embark on a quest to recover all the shards of a powerful and mystical jewel, epic battles and hilarity ensue. To make this even more awesome, throw in his full (dog) demon brother, and wolf demon(Hella awesome) love rival. Large amounts of win.
Note: It can be argued, the protagonist is the school girl who serves as his love interest and sets the whole chain reaction leading to the quest is the protagonist. But honestly; who's name is on the title?
Spice and Wolf & Spice and wolf II - Mercantile Anime about business and medieval trade. Splashes of fantasy along the way. A wolf deity in the form of a girl is the selling point for this anime. Lemme repeat this one more time though:
Mercantile Anime about business and medieval trade.
Inubaka - a girl who's "crazy for dogs" seems to have a knack for taking care of dogs, so she gets a job in tokyoo at a petstore. Adorable puppies and thrilling tales of dog-due. Slice of life. Shoujou art style. YAY CHEESECAKE!
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin - Anime about dogs reclaiming a mountain from a "demon" bear. Feels like a Samurai manga... Only with dogs... The manga strikingly better quality than the anime.
Ginga Densetsu Weed - Sequel to Nagareboshi Gin, Gin's son reclaims his fathers territory from civil war. Once again, feels like a samurai manga... Where the samurai are dogs... BETTER THAN IT SOUNDS.
Ginga Densetsu Weed: Orion - Follow's Weed's children. No opinion. Have not watched/read it.
Naruto - The story of a ninja who wants to be the greatest ninja of all time. One of the clans of ninja in Naruto -- the Inuzuka clan -- are dog-wielding ninjas. They make Naruto worth it.
Live Action Version for lack of decent pics for Anime vers.
The Hakkenden - An epic from japan, translated into anime form(however loosely). This story is the namesake that gives the "Inuzuka" clan from Naruto their name. This is the story of the 8 "Inuzuka" samurai dog warriors.
The anime suffers from spazzy and old art, but it is good.
Note: Spiritual canine characters. Children of an actual(spirit)dog. These samurai are 100% human. But with canine ideology. e.g. loyalty, justice, etc.
Wolf's Rain - An anime about a pack of wolves journey to paradise in a post-apocalyptic world, following the scent of a lunar flower. Epicness ensues.
Inumimi- A scientist manages to make his dogs talk! Only, they're talking, because they're human now. Harem manga, Dog-girls. Moe-driven, but with semi-intelligent writing.
Dog(s)? - A manga about a post apocalyptic world. Despite the misleading title (as there are no actual dogs) There are some really dramatic scenes within. MATURE for violence. the phrase "They fought like dogs" apparently being the origin of the title. (Have not read, but going to)
Note: This manga apparently has a sequel, and that too has a sequel.
Mahou Sensei Negima - A shounen manga that revolves around Negi, a wizard who's test of wizardry is to teach a rebellious class at an all-girl-school. Magical high jinks ensue. Kotarou Inugami, one of the few recurring (AWESOME) male characters, is a Dog god, who works part time as a ninja.
Bleach - Not a fan. Not bothering with saying the plot. BUT there is a large captain of one the teams, who is actually a wolf himself.
Princess Mononoke - One of Hayao Miyazaki's many masterpieces. The story of a prince who has been exiled by his village for a curse of hatred placed upon him. Along his journey to find a way to cure his curse before it kills him, he manages to find an emissary of the spirits of the forest, a girl raised by(giant)wolves. The prince finds that the spirits of the forest are locked in a war with the humans of a nearby town. This is his story.
Hayao Miyazaki. If you haven't watched this classic, do it nao.
Beast Master - A shoujou manga with a misleading protagonist. For all intents and purposes, the protagonist is a canine character. Just close your eyes and chant a mantra every time he acts like a cat. It also doesn't help his name is 'leo'. The amount of dog character design far outweighs the cat side. I promise. (SHOUJOU)
Genesis of Aquarion - Another misleading protagonist. Repeat the same steps with 'Beauty is the Beast'. A Shounen sci-fi Anime about a group of people banding together in yet another post-apocalyptic world, wielding the worlds few remaining resources, along with a giant mech, to stave off alien attack. Everyone's pretty. I mean it.
note: Apparently, in addition to an anime, it also has a movie.
Fruits Basket - Yet another shoujou manga. Recieves praise over and over again. I have not read this. Why is this listed here? a majority of the characters are based around one of the animals of the chinese zodiac. That's right. There's a dog character.
Her Majesties dog - A shoujou/horror manga, of which i am not a fan. The protagonist's designs are cool,(Canine-like) but the story overall was not something I could appreciate. If you like people who make out in the middle of a battle. This might be your cup of tea.
Note: It might have some sequels, i'm not sure anymore.
Jin Ro Wolfs Brigade - Anime Movie, takes the idea of "Little red Riding hood" To extremes. Throw in some civil war, and psychological government conditioning, and you've got an awesome movie on your hands. No actual dogs, but the use of 'wolf' imagery to depict the-- aw, well, watch it. You'll see.
Stray dog - Manga, one-shot, the story of a land where wizards have mutated dogs into their own personal body guards and mindless servants. Impressive. From the Creator of Jin Ro: Wolf's brigade.
There are probably one or two more I haven't listed that I know about, but they're not popping into my head.
Obviously, my use of the term 'canine manga/anime' is very loose. Hell, Ookami, and Zelda twilight princess counts for me, even though they're video games! So, if it is even remotely dog-related, tell me about it. Sure, i'll be a little irked if you say "Maison ikkoku, that has a dog in it.
"But Remember; 1 > 0"
I beg of your assistance. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
